It must anniversary week, since it was brought to my attention that yesterday also marked the 20th anniversary of when Veronica Mars premiered.

This was a show I stuck around with during its original run. I remember getting into it in the middle of its first season after hearing so much about it from online friends, and let me tell you I was hooked. The show was fresh and engaging, it was bright and vibrant with color and great cinematography and stylistic choices. Veronica was such a fantastic character. I adored her sardonic dry sense of humor, how she fought for the underdogs, the relationship she had with her father along with helping him with his private detective work and doing her own investigating on the side, as well. The mystery and how it resolved was well-done, too, I liked that they didn't draw it out and had it wrapped up nicely. It was quite possibly a near-perfect first season.

Sadly, looking back the first season was probably the only good season the show had. Seasons two and three paled in comparison, and while the success of their Kickstarter was impressive, I didn't bother with the reunion movie that came out from that, and I refuse to acknowledge the fourth season revival.

Nevertheless, despite those grievances I do have fond memories with this show, and being reminded that it's been twenty years since its premiere is bringing them all back. Especially the fandom friends I made along the way with our shared love of the show at the time.

It seems that the Veronica Mars revival has no current plans for continuing onto a fifth season. I'm not entirely surprised.

I haven't watched any of the additional stuff after the third season, to be honest, because I've had no interest to. The fan-funded movie seemed more like a reunion than anything plot-related, and the revived fourth season, from what I've heard, was quite divisive among the fans ranging from some enjoying it to others feeling underwhelmed and disappointed, not to mention the backlash over the ending. I've said it before and I'll say it again, over the years I've come to the realization that the first season was legitimately the only good season the show ever had because it was a well-structured plot and a self-contained story that had a good resolution. I adored the first season, still do and in fact it's the season I rewatch the most. The seasons that followed, however, felt like it was trying too hard to recapture what the first season achieved but to no avail, and it felt as if there was an important component missing which made the first season so special and why people loved and enjoyed it in the first place. Like, there was a certain shift with the writing after season one that just felt off to me, and it was never quite fixed.

Who knows if they decide to continue on with it in the near future, but I just know for me my interest with this franchise stopped a long time ago. Which honestly is sad to admit, but these things do happen even with things you used to love.

++ I definitely want to read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn whenever I get the chance to, because of the high praise of the miniseries which is rightfully deserved. I already knew what the reveal was since I looked it up beforehand, but it still didn't lessen how effective that finale was. It's why I can't wait to actually read the book since I've heard that it's even more chilling and disturbing.

++ Melissa Rosenberg, the creator and showrunner for Netflix's Marvel's Jessica Jones, will be leaving after its third season. Most are worried about what this means for the future of the show. Whether Netflix will cancel it or find a replacement showrunner, and if the latter then will they find someone appropriate to fill in the shoes that will handle the topics and subject matter featured on the show with the same kind of sensitivity and respect that Rosenberg has been adamant about since day one. There's a lot of uncertainty right now, which is understandable. We'll just have to see what happens. Though whoever they choose for the possible next showrunner, I hope they will be more inclusive with adding more WOC/POC, which many have already criticized Rosenberg for excluding, who then claimed that "it didn't occur" to her. So yeah, while there's no doubt that Rosenberg brought a lot of amazing stuff to the show which is worth recognizing, she also lacked in certain areas, too. It's important to acknowledge these flaws and for hoping that S3 and beyond will try to do better in that department, regardless of the showrunner.

++ Veronica Mars will possibly be getting that revival treatment, with a limited eight-episode order on Hulu. I'll be completely honest, I have conflicted feelings about this. I think my main issue is mostly tied to this revival/reboot culture we're currently living in that I've ranted about before, and how oftentimes these revivals have less than desirable results with their final product. Some may be decent, but sometimes you gotta take a step back and go, do we really need this?

I loved Veronica Mars when it aired, but I think as time has gone on I've since gained a different perspective and have come to the conclusion that I only really truly loved the first season, everything else after that was lackluster in some form or another. S2 was a mess, S3 was slightly better but not by much, and I didn't even bother with the reunion movie despite the success of the Kickstarter (which ironically is where I believe this revival trend sparked from, tbh) since it was mostly just bringing back as many actors as possible without there being much of a plot. So, in my opinion, their track record hasn't really been that impressive for getting me on board with this revival. Perhaps I'm being too cynical, idk. It could actually turn out to be rather decent, but as a whole I'm just not at that excitement level as I probably would've been years ago.

Rounding up some of my favorite bits from SDCC:

It's like Christmas for geeks and nerds.... )

Obviously it's not everything that happened, because that would take forever to get through, never mind that there are still some panels that I haven't seen yet that I'm waiting to be uploaded in their entirety. This is just my own personal round-up of favorite moments that have really made me smile and appreciate why SDCC is such an amazing event.

Lost Girl - 3.08 - Fae-ge Against The Machine )

Revenge - 2.15 - Retribution )

Apparently, there's been a lot of excitement going on today in fandom. Mostly because of the announcement that the possibility of a VERONICA MARS movie may be happening.

This is rather a big deal, considering that whenever Kristen and Rob Thomas approached Warner Bros. over the years about the possibility of making a Veronica Mars movie they always shot it down because they didn't believe there was an audience for it. Despite, you know, the huge dedicated fanbase and all the raving critics when the show was airing, etc. Well, thank goodness for something like Kickstarter to exist because fans can help fund for the movie, making this possibility into a reality. In a way, this shows Warner Bros. that there is an audience out there, and that there is massive support of getting this movie in production.

I'm all for this. Bring it on.

UPDATE: Well damn, that was fast. It seems that fans can do anything, including raising over 2 million dollars in a single day. O_O

This isn't something new, unfortunately. Sexism is everywhere, fandom included. But there's been a huge massive amounts of it presented recently to an alarming amount that I literally had to stop and walk away from the computer. I was that livid. What shocked me were how it wasn't the fandoms that constantly express blatant sexist and problematic issues such as in Glee and Supernatural, but from positive, empowering pro-woman ones like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars. The amount of hate spewed towards the woman characters of these shows, particularly towards Buffy and Veronica, and more specifically stemming from their relationships with the men in their lives and how they so-called treated those men (a.k.a. these people end up placing the male characters on a pedestal while blaming and shaming the women), and calling them derogatory names thinking it justifies anything is just outright vile and disgusting.

For example: someone commented on how Buffy was a "whore" because of the way she treated Spike and how she still holds feelings for Angel, another person said that Veronica was a "bitch" because she didn't forgive Logan for the Madison thing, even went on saying that she should have just "gotten over it" because she "suffered way worse" and she should have thought about his feelings instead of being selfish and only thinking about herself. Even in the Gossip Girl fandom, people end up shaming Blair Waldorf calling her a "bitch" and a "slut" because she doesn't stay with Chuck, while at the same time excusing and justifying all the mistakes and horrible things Chuck has done himself. These people feel the need to hate and shame women every chance they get, making cowardice comments about how they are "bitches" and "sluts" and actually think it's okay, while defending the male characters because apparently they can do no wrong.

And all these things are just the tip of the iceberg of the kind of sexist bullshit that happens in fandom, and real life, on a daily basis.

I was bombarded with a shitload of it just the other day, and while I do my best to defend and make my points whenever I see something that offensive pop up it was completely unbearable this time and I couldn't stomach it anymore. It's disgusting, repulsive and it needs to be called out on whenever it occurs. I just couldn't believe someone would have the audacity to post something that horrible about strong female characters who, while flawed, are just human and you can understand where they are coming from. It's just unbelievable.

++ If anyone still would like a Christmas card, please go to this post and give me your address. Also let me know if you want to send me one so I can give you mine. *g*

++ In the midst of finding new fandoms to get attached to, I've come across one that has surprised me. Pretty Little Liars. Has anyone else watched this season so far? It's good, like really good. I haven't read the books, but I really like it so far and the show really does great with the mysteries and the characters and their relationships. I definitely recommend it for those who like teen dramas that have mysteries. Also, [livejournal.com profile] alexwhitman25? I downloaded all of the first season of The Vampire Diaries and will be starting that soon after I finish with Pretty Little Liars. I've also been catching up on the new Hawaii 5-0 and I also like that, too. It's your typical procedural crime show of course, but with Daniel Dae Kim and the lovely Grace Park. Seeing more Asians on my television is a good thing, I mean they had Dichen Lachman in one of the previous episodes. How awesome is that? \O/

++ I also rewatched the third season of Veronica Mars and....I don't understand the negativity people had for it. I thought it was way better than the second season, and actually felt like the first season writing/acting wise, and I'm happy where it ended off, inconclusive probably but with the relationships of characters it was nice, and Veronica had gotten her groove back. So I don't understand the amount of hate it got.

++ Reading articles like this and this make me really pissed off and bitter about what happened with Caprica. For a network that says they are behind the BSG franchise, nothing of what they've done supports such a claim at all. It disappoints and infuriates me, it also makes me even more adamant in fighting against it.

++ HARRY FREAKING POTTER THIS FRIDAY! OMGOMGOMG.

It is almost finally here! Anyone going to the midnight showing? Unfortunately I cannot, however I will be planning on going this weekend for sure and I most certainly am going to be buying a midnight ticket when Part 2 comes out next year. *shaking and crying*

++ Sadness and grief in the media and pop culture recently. Too many legends and amazing people are taken from us too soon and unexpectedly. It's surprising and shocking because we seem to think these individuals are immortal, they're legends and are supposed to live forever and ever. Then the reality hits us. From Farrah Fawcett to Michael Jackson, even actress Lorena Gale who played Elosha from BSG, these are people who brought us a lot of greatness in life and we should celebrate their achievements and how they shaped our culture and society. I know many people have certain opinions about certain celebrities, but to place that aside and really focus on the influences they had in our lives and culture is what matters now. Let us not speak or think ill of the dead, and also let us not exaggerate what should be left alone and in peace (looking at you, media people!)

++ In the middle of my fandom rewatching I decided to just dive right in and rewatch Veronica Mars which also includes, yes, season three which I avoided for the longest time because I fell out of that show. And you know what? It really isn't that bad. While Rob Thomas has some issues with his repeated rape/sexual assault plots throughout the show, it isn't to say he didn't have something of a plan for his characters one way or another. But it all takes me back to these characters, and how much Veronica rocked hardcore, the awesomeness of Mac, the love for Weevil, and how much I disliked Logan. Ah, memories.

Which, are they continuing with the idea of a Veronica movie or was that just talk? Because honestly, after the mess that happened with Elle's storyline in Heroes I kinda want Kristen Bell to return to having good characterization written for her.

++ There are two new shows that I've been thinking about watching: Glee and Virtuality, the latter which premiered last night on FOX and was written/created by Ron D. Moore. I saw a clip and was intrigued, read the description for the show got even more intrigued. Now it's hunting down the download time!

I'm guessing everybody's heard the news that Veronica Mars has been cancelled, indefinitely. After all the bouncing around in-and-out of speculated rumors, it's been officially confirmed that the show is no more. Can't say that I'm surprised, though it is unfortunate. I used to love watching the show, the first season was golden and I thought it was intelligent television. But then things started declining and I fell out of the fandom altogether. The cancellation isn't really shocking considering how fans felt about the direction the show had been going, but it's always a devastation when a show you like (or used to like watching) will be going off the air. Farewell, VMars.

And since everybody is doing this interesting little meme:

Name a character and I’ll tell you three (or more) facts about him/her from my own personal pseudo-canon.

Those unfamiliar with my fandoms can be located in my userinfo, though the ones I'm currently following at this moment are: Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, House M.D., Supernatural, Painkiller Jane, Dexter (though I've only seen the pilot), Bones, Medium, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Stargate Atlantis, and Criminal Minds.

1. Even if it's not officially spring according to the calender, it certainly feels like it. Although today is slightly cooler than yesterday, there's no denying that the warmth is returning. This means I can finally wear all the cute spring clothes I have, and possibly go shopping for more!

2. However, the Daylight Savings change is still kicking my ass to wake up on time for class.

3. In honor of conspicuous pimping: The St. Paddy's Recovery Friending Meme and Heroes Friending Meme. Go ye forth my precious minions, and even if you don't participate at least pimp them to spread the love. In turn, I welcome those who've been friended from these memes!

4. For those still wondering and confused over the Veronica Mars situation, a recent article from Ausiello's column debunks anything of the circulating rumors that the entire cast, sans KB, has been released from their contracts. The future for the show, however, is still unclear. As it can go several ways, either by cancellation or renewal, or for the possibility of an FBI series. I'm still digesting the information and wary about the idea about this whole VM:FBI deal, but I'll probably give my personal opinion on this some other time since everybody in the VMars fandom is already putting in their two cents about all this hoopla.
