rogueslayer452: (Jessica Jones. Private Investigator.)
++ It has been confirmed that Krysten Ritter is returning as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again season two. Ever since she voiced her interest in returning I knew there would be a high possibility of it happening, and now it's finally arrived! I'm curious to see what they do, but I know that the Jessica and Matt dynamic is going to be amazing regardless. They were the highlight of The Defenders for me, so seeing them together again is going to be an utter delight. All they need to do is get Elodie Yung back as Elektra, since has has also expressed her wishes of returning in the role as well, and that would be icing on the cake for me.

++ HBO Max has changed its name back after two years of a brief rebranding. This is such a frivolous thing, but I just find it funny since the renaming was so pointless.

++ As someone who watches a lot of YouTube, I've become quite disillusioned by a lot of individual YouTubers over the years. For various reasons, the obvious being the push of the algorithm and the strive for monetization instead of just the passion of creating or talking about something they wanted to share which has ruined a lot of people who I initially used to like watching and seeing that shift has, either soured me to them or left me feeling indifferent and just no longer engaging. Between that and people just making long form videos (ex: the video essay bandwagon) to say a whole lot of nothing (literally an example of "this could've been an email" vibe, just link the wikipedia article you're directly reading from and STFU) I just have very little patience for things that waste my time in such a way. I get wanting to make money, I get that the platform has forced this on creatives who just want to do their own thing, but as I mentioned previously regarding true crime there are a lot of grifters and even sadly people who turn into grifters (anything involving drama or supposed drama, exaggerating or poorly representing a situation just for clicks and views) and it makes it difficult to find anything genuine or authentic and, while it is important to do so, it can be tiring to constantly question the motivations of why someone is making a video about a topic.

I know that YouTube has always had this side to it even in the early days, but with the way everything is online nowadays it can be quite disheartening seeing it so much more. It's why I've become so selective of who I choose to watch more frequently of.
rogueslayer452: (Haven. Audrey Parker.)
It's not a secret that the true crime online community is quite controversial for numerous reasons. From being horribly invasive and exploitative to spreading misinformation, whether intentionally or accidentally from not doing proper research, and even treating real life people of these serious and horrific events as something fictional or even something to idolize, it's understandable that people are uneasy and disgusted with the unethical and deplorable way some in the true crime community have conducted themselves in various online spaces by crossing that line in taking things too far.

It is also understandable why people gravitate towards these kinds of topics. I, myself, am no stranger to the subject of true crime and unsolved mysteries, having watching shows such as City Confidential and Forensic Files and even watched some YouTube videos covering similar topics every now and again. There is an inherent fascination, or rather morbid curiosity, surrounding it. Not only of being aware of certain cases (as one would naturally be if you're watching news coverage in real time) but also trying to understand the why. Why would someone do something like this? What is going through someone's head? Could they have been helped? What could have been done differently? It's the same thought process one might have when watching a horror movie, which is probably where the line blurs for some who do unfortunately treat true crime as something fictional to fixate on, or similar to that of a "train wreck" or "car crash" incident where your curiosity to such disasters lead to some viewing it as a spectacle than anything. While it is natural to try to understand the darker side of human nature and the psychological elements of that to better understand our world and who we are as human beings, there needs to be an understanding of boundaries and practicing basic decency, respect, and sensitivity when approaching these particular topics. Sadly, this doesn't always happen by those who are just looking to monetize content.

Whether it be in official documentaries or YouTube videos or any kind of online post, it's best to take them with a grain of salt since most of them are done with a certain bias, and doing your own research by cross referencing information is better to get the full picture than just relying on the words of a singular source.

++ The Yuri!!! On Ice movie, Ice Adolescence, has officially been cancelled.

I didn't watch the show, although it's been on my list to and I've only seen some clips (both in Japanese and English dubbed), but I do remember how big it was when it first came out. It gained massive attention and popularity, so when the announcement of a follow-up movie was to happen shortly thereafter along with a teaser trailer fans were understandably excited and happily awaiting for it to arrive. And then nothing. No update announcements for years. I think it's fair to say that while the cancellation announcement wasn't so much of a surprise considering the years wait, it's still disappointing especially for the fans who were holding out some hope that it would happen. What happened behind-the-scenes or why they didn't announce this sooner, we may never know. But it's sad how they really truly fumbled with this.

Speaking of fumbling the ball....

++ Watcher Entertainment has announced they are leaving YouTube for their own streaming service and basically putting their work behind a paywall. The response from the fanbase has been overwhelmingly negative.

My thoughts on the ongoing situation. )

I don't know. This is still developing so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

++ After seeing the third trailer for Dune: Part 2, and recognizing some of the scenes presented, I'm absolutely ready for this movie. I know it had been pushed back due to the strikes, although now we have a definitive date for its premiere: March 1st. I cannot wait.

Additionally, Denis Villenevue announced that the script for a third Dune is almost finished, by which he means adapting the second book, Dune Messiah. It seems he wants to direct a proper trilogy, and quite frankly I think it works because Dune Messiah is all about deconstructing Paul's arc and journey. I don't know if there are plans on adapting the rest of the books (again, I want them to get to God Emperor of Dune because, WORM! GOLDEN PATH! WEIRDNESS GALORE!), I think adapting at least the first two books is a good starting point.

++ It's also been announced that Saw XI is in the works, continuing the Saw franchise with its eleventh installment that will premiere in September of 2024. As I said in my Saw X review recently, I'm always ready for more of these movies.

++ Hearing about the Cait Corrain (a debut book author review bombing smaller authors, being racist, and ultimately tanking their own career before it even began) drama and the whole expose of James Somerton by Hbomberguy (among others) for being a mass plagiarist and spreading misinformation, it's been quite an interesting thing to witness especially when it has become a conversation by bringing up the deeper, bigger issues each situation has. The former brings attention to the ongoing issues surrounding GoodReads and review bombing which has been a massive problem for a lot of authors for years and how Amazon refuses to do anything about it, while with the latter others have addressed the importance of double/triple/quadruple checking information instead of relying solely on a single source and taking what is being said at face value and being able to suss out the bullshit particularly in regards to stealing/plagiarism and giving questionable statements. Online drama of varying degrees come and go, and yes the Internet will want instant gratification by being reactionary in the moment when it happens, but I do like it when there are takeaways like these where people actually examine the bigger picture and what can be learned from it.

++ With YouTube attempting to block anyone from using adblockers, it just really highlights the absolute capitalistic bullshittery that's been happening online over the recent years. Listen, websites need money to continue to exist, we know and understand this. At best, it's an inconvenient annoyance. However, bombarding people with an endless string of unnecessary and oftentimes unskippable ads isn't going to win people over. And forcing people to see them by taking away their choice to block it just so you can get money is going to repel them even more.

++ Because it's nearing Halloween, this is something that's been on my mind recently. I absolutely love holiday special episodes in television shows, which is something I think has been lost in the recent years of streaming that has drastically reduced episode numbers per season. Aside from losing the episodic factor, it doesn't allow us to get these amazing holiday-centric episodes that can be silly and ridiculous or just overall festive in tone. It can be plot-related or just something completely separate. Sure, not all of them are winners, but the joy comes from seeing what the writers can come up with to accommodate to the holiday themed episode, and if nothing else let us be entertained. Halloween and Christmas special episodes are my favorite, though Thanksgiving episodes can also be just as good too, if nothing else than for the autumn aesthetic. And I think that's what I like about these special holiday episodes, it's the aesthetic. Whether it advances the seasonal plot or not, you can always count on those holiday episodes of providing some kind of festive aesthetic vibe.

(Similarly, while I don't really watch them, I can understand the appeal of Hallmark holiday movies, since they provide a similar dedication to the aesthetic of the holiday they're centering the story around. Every scene, every location, every frame is filmed with lights and decorations so you don't forget what holiday they're in, lol.)

++ I recently found out that costumer designer Shawna Trpcic has passed away. She's worked on various projects, but I mostly knew her from Whedon shows, particularly that of Firefly since I listened to an episode commentary with her featured where she discussed the process of the costumes for that specific episode among other behind-the-scenes information. So even though I didn't follow her closely over the years, this news was still quite a shock.

++ Reddit is a site that I previously was hesitant on visiting that much in the past because I heard it was a cesspool, and while it can be that for sure so can most sites, to be honest. It just depends on the subreddit. Reddit operates similarly to that of the old school forum/message boards with subreddits have individual moderators, which is part of why I've been finding myself visiting there more frequently as of late. Although the site itself has its fair share of issues, it's also a great way of finding different communities and people with opinions, thoughts, and places of discussion that isn't so easily found elsewhere online, including useful resources, informative advice and news updates. I don't have an account there, I prefer to lurk and browse, but I do like visiting daily for these particular things, from fandom to just general news and information.

++ Watching Make Some Noise on Dropout.tv has been my highlight of the last week. It's a spin-off little game show from its own game show, Game Changer, where both are similar in the format of Whose Line although I'd argue that Make Some Noise is a bit more of that in its nature due to its prompts. And just like Game Changer, it's absolutely hilariously chaotic. I'm sure some have already seen some clips floating about (the Times New Roman vs. Comic Sans one, and the most recently Brennan Lee Mulligan's Trump-as-Sauron impression being the most circulated that I've seen), and trust me it's this unhinged and then some. Here is a random compilation of some moments from season two just to get a bit of a glimpse of the shenanigans that occur.

I've been rather down lately, so I wanted to share a video that I always go back to whenever I need a pick-me-up. Essentially, it's just Matt Mercer dancing to Lady Gaga. It makes me smile every single time, and hopefully it'll make you smile as well. :)

++ The third episode of Narrative Telephone by the Critical Role cast is up, and it's just as hilarious as the last two episodes. Honestly, this is probably my favorite thing they've done since these stay-at-home orders halted their continuation of the second campaign. It works great that they get to revisit certain characters by telling a short story, the retellings are absolutely hilarious, and I love seeing their reactions to watching the retellings of the story devolve. I have laughed until tears are in my eyes, and it really makes it so worth it waiting for each new episode.

++ It has been confirmed that Katee Sackhoff will be reprising the role of Bo-Katan, the character she voices in the The Clones Wars animated series, in the second season of The Mandalorian. First of all, because I'm so out-of-the-loop since I don't really pay attention to these things I didn't even know that Katee voiced her in that show, so all the fancastings and fan wishes for her to play a live-action version of the character makes so much more sense now. Secondly, and more importantly, Katee will be back on my television screen! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

I am curious, though, what the second season of The Mandalorian will entail. There have been a lot of casting announcements about certain characters appearing in the upcoming season and while it's intriguing, it does make me a little worried on how fast things will go because, like I mentioned before, I enjoy a slow-burn. I don't want them to immediately jump headfirst into bigger plots or territories of that nature as soon as the second season premieres. I want them to take their time unraveling things. Surely, these will most likely be cameos and they'll most likely guide Din and the Baby to their next destination or mission, but still. I don't know. It may seem like I'm whinging a bit, but it's mostly because the first season was so good and I don't want them to feel pressured by Disney to go bigger and grander to keep audiences interested.

++ Been making my way through all of Buzzfeed Unsolved, both their Supernatural and True Crime series, and it's made me laugh so many times, mostly with their banter which genuinely makes me happy. I also recently learned that Ryan and Shane both left Buzzfeed earlier this year to make their own company, which makes sense. Aside from everyone saying that they're too good for Buzzfeed anyway, their shows kind of outgrew that company anyway so departing and making their own company would be the next logical step. Puppet History, one of their shows on their new channel, has me cackling. It's so great.

++ It seems that Syfy has been having marathons/airings of Battlestar Galactica and Xena: Warrior Princess, and I have to say this is a perfect time to get introduced or reintroduced to BSG and have kind of a resurgence. So say we all!

++ There are now official releases of promotional stills from the upcoming 2020 version of Dune (which from what I've learned will be split into two movies, considering how dense the story is I'm not surprised). I still maintain my position that I approve with most of the casting except for Timothée Chalamet where I feel like he's miscast. Perhaps once a trailer drops it might be better in motion, otherwise I'm not convinced. With that being said, everyone else looks fantastic. I know everyone's been thirsting over Oscar Isaac's bearded look, but also Zendaya looks amazing as Chani, as I knew she would but I like that we're seeing her with blue eyes in the stills, so it makes me hope that the finished product will amplify the intensely unusual blue-on-blue eyes of the Fremen, something that every adaptation has had issues with but I hope that with today's technology they're able to pull it off well. I like the design of the stillsuits, and it seems that they genderswapped Liet-Kynes which should be interesting. These are just the first looks though, I'm anticipating any kind of teaser trailers to reveal to us the look and feel of the movie itself, along with the possibility of seeing how they do the sandworms. In general though, I'm just curious with how they're going to do certain things from the book. I know that the director claims that they're going to be as faithful as possible, I still don't want them to cut any corners, to not sugarcoat anything and let it be unabashedly weird.

Which brings me to my next point: people unfamiliar with Dune are not only going to be incredibly confused going in, but judging from the way outrage culture has been in recent years especially among the fandom community where purity policing has ruined many a good series/fandoms/fan interactions, I am absolutely certain that the morality police will be clutching their pearls and demanding that Dune be cancelled simply for the fact that this is not a completely wholesome. Furthermore, if this movie succeeds and they're able to adapt the rest of the books, oh boy, their heads are going to explode with how further fucked up and bizarre it all is. It's going to be simultaneously hilarious and exhausting to deal with the levels of "discourse" it will cause.

This is a time where I'm kind of revisiting old shows that I haven't rewatched a long time, but I'm also getting into shows that I've heard about from others but never actually saw an episode of other than people referencing it. Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural is one of those shows. And I'm honestly astounding how I didn't get into this show before, since this is precisely the kind of content I thrive for. I've watched some paranormal investigation shows in the past so you'd think I would've been all over this the moment I heard about it, and yet I didn't get into it until just now.

There is just something so hilarious seeing two people with different approaches to the paranormal investigating together, one who believes and one who certainly doesn't believe and who often taunts the potential ghosts in an area ("hey, you demon fuck!") leading to so comedic moments between the two. It's entertaining to watch, and I need a good laugh right now.

I'm also watching some other old paranormal-esque shows (The Others and Freakylinks) because I haven't seen them in a long ass time and, for some reason, I'm now compelled to try and find old shows that lasted about one season or so and watch them again.
