++ Speaking of books, Francine Pascal recently passed away. She was known primarily as the author of the Sweet Valley High books, however I mostly know her for writing the Fearless book series when I was a teenager. I have the entire series and I treasure them. Gaia Moore was quite an inspirational character for me.

++ Apparently there was supposed to be a new Battlestar Galactica series in development on Peacock that supposedly connected with the 2003 series, but that project has recently reported to be axed, with claims that they are "shopping it around" to other outlets. This was the first I had heard of this even happening, since the only thing that I recall was the movie reboot that has long been in development for years, which as far as I know is unfortunately still going forward. There was no further information that I could find other than this new series was going to be in continuity with Ronald D. Moore's BSG, which quite frankly I would be on board with if there were more details on what this project would've entailed, such as the story, the vibe, where was it taking place and when, etc. All of this kind of matters if you're pitching this being in the continuity of the re-imagined reboot.

Better yet, just get Ronald D. Moore back and we can do a continuity series proper. Give me Caprica 2.0, dammit. Let us explore the different worlds of the Twelve Colonies, or let us explore Kobol prior to the events of the series, or even Original Earth! I can even imagine having some of the cast returning, too, if this were to be the case.

++ So while I'm currently on a Meet You At The Blossom high, I've been seeing things with a new cdrama called Snowfall, which is a Republican Era vampire story. Just based on what little I've seen that comes across my Tumblr dash, I'm intrigued. It's a vibe and very aesthetically pleasing, in more ways than one. That will be yet another drama to check out in the near future, for sure.

I'm someone who hated required reading in school, and I hate to admit that it did put me off reading for pleasure for a brief period of time, particularly as adolescent/preteen. With having said that, though, I didn't have any hate over any book in particular, it was just being forced to read for a grade that was the issue. That's all. However, despite this, there were some assigned reading that I actually did end up liking, even loving, throughout my time in school.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
Matilda by Roald Dahl
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Proof by David Auburn (self-selected)

The first two, Island of the Blue Dolphins and Matilda, were read in elementary school, and I remember distinctly renting the 1964 film adaptation of Island of the Blue Dolphins either after or during reading the book, and I of course saw Matilda when that movie came out. The Giver and Walk Two Moons were middle school assigned reading, and I remember liking both, especially The Giver which made quite an impression on me, and was probably my first taste of the dystopian genre. And of course with To Kill A Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies in high school, those were the only two books that I was so enraptured by that I actually read ahead of the assigned chapters. I remember we watched the courtroom scene of To Kill A Mockingbird (1962) which furthered my adoration of the story itself, and why I consider it to be among my favorite books. Proof is a play that I picked out myself to read for theater class because I was going to be absent for a week of school and my homework was to write a paper on a play, and I actually liked it a whole lot.

Beyond that I don't remember a whole lot that I was assigned to read, if there was a compiled list I might be able to recognize them, but I probably wouldn't remember anything about them. Also, I wouldn't be opposed to reading them again now as an adult, because that would be more of a personal choice and curiosity than mandatory for a grade in class.

++ I received the second volume of Heaven Official's Blessing! It looks so beautiful, I mean of course it is. Now I'm just anxiously awaiting not just for the next of MXTX's novel volumes to be released, but also for the second season of Heaven Official's Blessing donghua.

++ By the end of February, all of Netflix's Marvel shows will disappear from the service completely. This is mostly speculated because of the contracts the shows had, and based on some characters making appearances in newer MCU-based material on Disney+, it's basically suggesting that Disney will now completely own them. I'm still bitter that they cancelled those shows, though, all because of streaming service wars and whatever ownership feud that was happening and the Marvel switch-up that happened, which unfortunately had a hand in cancelling all non-MCU Marvel shows, and I don't want these characters to be part of the MCU at all, they were fine doing their own thing, existing separately in their own stories without any MCU characters influence whatsoever. I don't know whether those shows are going to be on Disney+ or not, it just sucks that you cannot buy DVDs for them because I would do that in a heartbeat.

++ I have no interest in watching the series, but seeing the reactions to what's been revealed of Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been entertaining, to say the least. I figure no matter what, people are going to be unhappy, it's inevitable, because of comparisons to PJ's LOTR trilogy or hardcore Tolkien fans who are deep with the lore are going to tear it apart. I don't have strong opinions (aside from Dwarven women not having beards, the lack of men/elves having long hair or being androgynous, that's just cowardly and a massive disappointment tbh), I'm just going to wait with everyone else and see what comes from it. Although I will say, for a production that was worth over one billion dollars everything seen so far makes it look hilariously cheap and underwhelming.

(Of course, as someone who loves The Hobbit films with my whole heart, flaws and all, I have no room to make such judgments. People will watch it and like what they like, dislike what they dislike, and as someone who has no interest in watching it it's just going to be one hell of a ride watching the fandom outcome of it nonetheless, is all I'm saying.)

++ Christmas came early as I'm now in possession of the first volumes of all three of MXTX's novels! We preordered them and they arrived the other day. They are absolutely gorgeous, the artwork on the front and back covers and the artwork inside, the way it's designed is just so beautiful. The fact that I'm now holding official physical copies of these stories makes me so unbelievably happy! I can't wait to dive right into reading them!

++ And unfortunately because there is a teaser trailer for the upcoming third Fantastic Beasts film, JKR is right back at it with her transphobic bullshit once again, and thus the discourse surrounding her and the HP series has risen, and quite frankly I'm just so tired of it all. More specifically, I'm tired of the discussion that has devolved into just shaming and guilt-tripping people. That is not only counterproductive to the situation, it's just mean-spirited as a whole, and unsurprisingly it's done by people who have never cared for HP to begin with or have just outright hated the franchise, and since the creator has exposed themselves to being an awful person headlining a hate movement they use that as an excuse to hate on fans who still love the series despite its awful creator. I've seen some really horrible and insensitive takes circulating lately, and the way a lot of these arguments are framed are so obviously performative with the faux activism angle, and I feel like the conversation has been derailed at this point because of that. This is a very delicate situation that deserves to be handled with nuance and discussed in a serious manner, but we cannot do that if people are just going to be so flippantly dismissive and insensitive with black and white ways of thinking. That is not a helpful approach, at all.

++ Speaking of polarizing public figures, Anne Rice has passed away.

Admittedly, aside from knowing the mainstream popularity of Interview with the Vampire and unashamedly adoring the Queen of the Damned movie, I never really got into her work. The only things that I know Anne Rice from are, unfortunately, the damage that she caused the overall fandom community from her anti-fanfiction stance. Her work was obviously deeply influential especially when it comes to vampire fiction in pop culture, there is no denying her importance in that, at the same time though she does have a dark history with fandom that is hard to ignore especially since it has affected so many people in very negative ways. We can, and should, acknowledge both when talking about her legacy as an author.

++ Euphoria came out with a teaser trailer for its second season, which will premiere January 9th. Finally, finally, getting the new season after it being delayed since the pandemic happened. I know that they filmed special episodes that were shown last year (and the beginning of this year), which I appreciated the efforts for what they were able to do, but I'm even more excited to have the continuation of the story that was being told.

++ Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat, the author of 2ha (a.k.a. The Husky And His White Cat Shizun), has revealed that an official English translation of her book is in the works. At first I kind of wanted to wait until the negotiations have been completed and we got an official confirmation, but I have to admit that I'm excited about this happening. I've been curious about 2ha for some time now, and who knows when the live-action adaptation will eventually come out of being in limbo, so I'm looking forward to getting to have an official English translated copy in my hands.

++ In some more serious news, I just recently learned that Eliza Dushku testified to a congressional committee in regards to being silenced from speaking out against sexual harassment in the workplace, and how she was fired for calling out this harassment. Her entire testimony is available to watch, which I highly recommend because she goes into further detail of what happened, and it's definitely worse than what was initially revealed at the time. Thankfully, the committee voted in favor of abolishing the forced arbitration clause which she, and many others, were testifying against, and it's onto the next step forward into hopefully making that happen, which is good, it's progress at least. Regardless though, what happened to her is horrifying and disgusting. I also learned that Eliza stopped acting entirely after this incident, which is understandable but it's just so sad and unfair that she suffered through something so traumatic that when she tried to fight against it in the most professional way possible she was fired and treated like she was in the wrong, while her harasser is still employed with no repercussions whatsoever to his behavior.

++ I'm so excited since it's has been announced that there's going to be official English translations of all of MXTX's novels (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving Service, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and Heaven Official's Blessing) which you can pre-order right now. There's release schedules of the volumes for each, and according to the sources the translations will be uncensored, will be featuring the extra chapters, and the proceedings will go to the author. I know there's been skepticism and concerns about the latter especially, and while I don't know much information myself and I want to directly support the author, I want to trust the people involved with this that they're being honest in those statements. Either way though, I am excited for this because MXTX's work has become more known thanks to the success of The Untamed, and I know it's been hard for a lot of international fans to get any kind of official anything of these IPs, and hopefully this will not only get more people to become aware and interested in these works but also help other Chinese novels to get officially translated into English, as well.

I am still going to purchase the Chinese editions of the novels though, simply because I want to, since I'm that kind of person who will buy, if possible, a book in its original language alongside the translated version.

(As a sidenote, I know that the MXTX fandom is quite wanky in itself, most of which I only know via osmosis through third parties because I don't delve that deep into that side of the fandom and keep to my own carefully curated space, and already there's been a lot of concerns and skepticism and pessimism over the EN translations, what this means for the fan translations already available online, what it means for expanding the fandom, etc. I get some of the concerns, as I'm also kind of wary of how the expansion of these fandoms will include Westerners bringing in their own biases and expectations and not understanding the cultural significances and differences and such, which is a learning curve but requires a lot of patience and listening to Chinese fandom instead of talking over them, as is always the case. But still, I'd like to take a more optimistic approach.)

++ Also, in a kind of related note, Neil Gaiman might have also spiked more international interest with Word Of Honor because one of the main leads of the drama endorsed one of his anthology books, Smoke and Mirrors (and also The Graveyard Book as well), which ended up topping the Chinese book charts, which he acknowledged and commented on both on his Twitter and Facebook being pleasantly surprised, which he then responded to wanting to watch Word Of Honor after a fan commented about it being available on Netflix.

It's just a surreal thing, two different fandoms from two different cultural backgrounds colliding with one another in an unexpected, but amazing way. I truly hope that not only does Neil Gaiman watch and enjoy the show, but that others that are discovering it enjoy it as well.

++ It's been announced that the last book of James S.A. Corey's The Expanse series is going to be called Leviathan Falls. A perfect bookend title, truly. This is the ninth and last book of the entire series, which will be released sometime in 2021. I know fans are excited for this, and it makes me hope that the show continues on long enough to adapt the entirety of the series.

++ Tatiana Maslany has been cast to be She-Hulk for Disney+. Honestly? Fantastic casting. I love Tatiana, she's incredibly talented (obviously, if you've seen her in Orphan Black you know). I'm just happy she's getting more recognition in general.

++ The trailer dropped for Hogwarts: Legacy, the first open world RPG video game for the Harry Potter franchise that will be released in 2021.

I know that it's been claimed that JKR isn't involved with the game, but the reality is that she still profits off of anything Wizarding World related, whether she was involved in the production of something or not. It's a delicate time right now concerning Joke Karen and her public bigoted antics, with many fans questioning whether or not they should even engage or buy anything HP-related anymore as to not support her, that debate has been going on for a long while now, even more so in recent months. It's a complicated situation where neither I, nor anyone else, can tell people what to do in that regard. With that being said, an RPG game centered around Harry Potter is something many fans have been wanting for years, and it's kind of amazing that we're finally getting it now. Hell, I remember thinking that Pottermore was going to be that and was sourly disappointed when it wasn't. Because let's be honest, the Wizarding World in itself is massive and the possibilities are endless with exploring that world and everything else in between.

So yeah, the trailer certainly looks good and interesting, though I'll have to wait to see footage of actual gameplay since cinematic trailers for video games are often quite different and may not actually reflect the final product itself. So we shall see if it lives up to the hype.

Taken from the Crunchy Questions Meme:

We all know that the source material is often regarded as better than adaptations, however what is an adaptation that you think is better than its source material?

A lot of the time whenever there is a book-to-movie adaptation, unless I've read the source material first beforehand, I tend to see an adaptation first before reading the book if it interests me. This just kind of happened naturally for me (due to having watched a lot of movies and television more than reading a lot of books when I was younger), but I like this method since it oftentimes allows me to squash those automatic nitpicking habits and consider them separate entities telling the same story in different mediums. There are certainly exceptions for sure, but in general I try to step back and be more objective when comparing the two. There are a lot of adaptations that miss the mark, and a lot that actually do it well, and then there are those that actually surpass the source material by making it better. It's all subjective, of course.

If I were to name a few.... )

I'm sure there are some others that I cannot recall, but these are the ones that immediately jump to mind when I think of adaptations that are better than or improve upon their source material.

Since the announcement that Animorphs is getting the movie treatment, I kind of wanted to give my thoughts and wishes on what I want out of this adaptation considering it's still in the early stages and nothing is set in stone quite yet. These are just my own personal thoughts and ideas, which are pretty basic for the most part, but as a fan of the series I just wanted to get this out there.

We can't tell you who we are. Or where we live. It's too risky. )

I may have more to add in the future, especially one more information about the movie being in development and just whatever comes to mind, but this is about it for the moment.

Furthermore, since I mentioned this previously but didn't provide a link, if you haven't read Animorphs and would like to, you can find all of them here. And yes, K.A. Applegate has given her approval of being reading the books for free online. So, have at it! ❤

Animorphs is getting a movie!

I honestly didn't think this would happen, because as popular as the book series were when I was a preteen/teenager it did kind of fade into obscurity with the rise of other book series that gained way more traction and popularity. Add to injury that the books eventually became out-of-print, so most probably didn't know of their existence until recent years with the notice that all of the books are available to read for free online. However, it seems like things are turning around, from the books being made into comics to this movie announcement, this is precisely the resurgence that we've been needing! Although I do question whether or not a movie is a good medium for such an adaptation, considering all that it entails and I fear that it might be watered down too much and it'll be considered too similar to the YA material that's come out in recent years to be noticed and therefore flop, which is why I kinda wish it was more of a long miniseries instead, but this is still exciting news regardless.

Also, it's worth mentioning that unlike a certain other author, K.A. Applegate is actually an ally, she also has been incredibly supportive of the fans and their personal interpretations, theories, and headcanons of the characters and books, even acknowledging that she could've done better in terms of representation when she wrote them.

And yes, I do recommend anyone who hasn't read Animorphs to do so, it may have been a kids book series but it never shied away from the dark subject matters, and it did get very dark. Body horror, murder, death, cannibalism, war, psychological trauma, it's all there and it's great.

(It makes me wonder if Everworld will ever get noticed, not just for an adaptation but just in general because it is often overlooked, it truly is the underdog of KAA's work imho.)
