++ It's December already. When did that happen? *sigh*

++ The recently premiered Canadian BL show, Heated Rivalry, has been making the rounds among fandom spaces. I haven't seen it yet myself, however I'm absolutely tickled by there finally being a hockey-based BL romance show, especially with it being quite mature with its content, aka the sex scenes. I know that the genre itself is quite popular, hockey RPF and hockey AUs fanfics abound in fandom, so it was about time it actually ended up getting made for television. Funnily, I follow a few people who constantly post about IRL hockey, so it can be a bit confusing at first glance on which are from the show and which are actual real life hockey players, lol.

++ I've been waiting until some episodes were already out before I started watching the fourth campaign of Critical Role, and I finally have.

My thoughts on Critical Role, Campaign 4 Episode 1: The Fall of Thjazi Fang )

Overall, I'm really looking forward to catching up.
rogueslayer452: (Summer Glau. Squee!)
++ The trailer for Critical Role's 4th campaign was revealed, with the premiere date of October 2nd. That's very soon, much sooner than I had thought. Not that I'm complaining, of course. After my complicated feelings regarding the third campaign, I'm ready for this refreshing switch-up. I've already seen the character art, and listening to Brennan's monologue in the trailer it certainly has piqued my curiosity on what the campaign is going to be about.

++ The newest addition to the V/H/S franchise, V/H/S/Halloween, has also released a trailer and will be premiering October 3rd. I had no idea that there was another one already, but I'm not entirely shocked either. This features two of my favorite things: the V/H/S franchise and Halloween. I'm all in.

++ Critical Role posted official announcement the other day regarding developments for its upcoming fourth campaign, which features quite a shakeup. Among the news that Brennan Lee Mulligan will be the main DM for the campaign itself (which he further confirms in an interview), Matthew Mercer will be featured as a player at the table along with some familiar faces and newer faces as well, and that this will be a brand new world to explore.

My further thoughts on the announcement. )

++ There is going to be a Hostel television series in development at Peacock, a bizarre choice given the subject matter of the incredibly violent and often polarizing horror franchise, however, I think if they play their cards right it could actually work.

I have thoughts and opinions on this. )

As a fan of horror, I know that not everything is going to be an easy sell for the larger broader audiences, and it's not usually a genre most want to watch on television unless it's of the right target demographic and the story and tone is interesting (see: Hannibal). It makes me wonder how they'll market this Hostel series to begin with, because even if one hasn't watched those films many know of them and their reputation.

++ As I've been catching up with [community profile] snowflake_challenge, I've also been using this opportunity to comment on people's posts who participated in the challenge. It's something I haven't done before from the previous years of doing Fandom Snowflake, mainly being rather nervous and awkward with interacting with someone who I didn't know, but this being a fandom event part of the reason why these things exist is to be interactive with one another. It's part of the reason why I miss that sense of community, what I used to do on LJ plenty of times. I like being able to talk with people about fandom things, and this is a good way of doing so.

This is definitely a process that I'm relearning myself. As someone who constantly harps on wanting more of a fandom community in these kinds of spaces, I need to do my part in making that happen, and part of my goals for this year and the future is to do that, which I am.

++ Critical Role wrapped its third campaign. I kinda stopped watching midway through and only paid attention to the highlights of what was going on, and the finale episode was eight hours long (why they couldn't have split it into two four hour long episodes, I don't know). Most of my thoughts are jumbled to make coherent sense and I'll make a longer post soon, but my brief overall feelings about this campaign can be summed up to this:

Not wholly positive, but not wholly negative either. )

++ I don't care about football or the Super Bowl, but that Kendrick Lamar halftime show segment? *chefs kiss*
rogueslayer452: (Firefly. Inara/Kaylee.)
++ I love the holiday season. And yet somehow, this year I'm feeling rather....down? I don't know. I don't usually get seasonal depression, though I have been wondering if this could be it in some way.

++ "My Christmas Sweet Love" by Dreamcatcher is not only a good uplifting song, it's also so them and the special clip music video they did for it is absolutely adorable.

++ Critical Role released a surprise a Christmas album, which coincides with their campaigns and the world of Exandria and the celebrating of Winter's Crest. It's truly really good! I shouldn't be surprised, the majority of the cast are good singers, but the thought they put into this little album is outstanding.

++ Krysten Ritter has expressed that she would love to reprise her role as Jessica Jones. Although the series hasn't premiered yet, everything we've been hearing about Daredevil: Born Again, from the revamping of what it was originally supposed to be to Charlie Cox reassuring fans that it is a continuation of the Netflix series as well as it'll be even darker than before, it gives me some kind of hope. I'm very wary of Disney/MCU stuff in general and I'll forever be bitter about the Netflix versus Disney ownership of the IP that cancelled their Netflix lineup, however if Daredevil: Born Again actually succeeds in all these things that are being promised so far then I would love for Jessica Jones to make her return. I miss her character so much. Krysten Ritter was perfection in the role, she was practically made for it.

++ Good Omens has scrapped its planned third season and the show will end with just having one 90 minute "episode" (really just a movie wrap-up) due to the multiple sexual abuse allegations against Neil Gaiman. I've only read the book, which I enjoyed, but had no interest in watching the show so I have no horse in this race.

++ The Legend of Vox Machina has been renewed for a fourth season, which is unsurprising since it seems to be doing quite well, especially with bringing in newcomers to the story. I do have thoughts on what's been happening so far with it, since they have changed certain arcs and directions in the story including particular powerful character moments which has a bit of mixed reactions from fans, but overall I know that with any adaptation there will be changes to fit a new medium. Critical Role has over 400 hours worth of material from its first campaign alone, and only having thirteen half-hour seasons to go through and pick out which pivotal moments to leave in to keep the story going. Much of their game was streamed live and had such amazing moments improv'd, it's hard to recreate that kind of energy when doing an animated series of that campaign. What worked for their streaming might not always work when animated, it won't hit the same way especially much of it was based on the cast reactions to in-game decisions and dice rolls. Furthermore, Ashley Johnson was gone during the campaign most of the time whereas the animated series is allowing Pike to actually have an active arc that she never got to participate in.

At the end of the day, it's good to remember that the animated series is an extremely condensed version of the game itself, and while it's okay to feel disappointed in what was changed the actual campaign they played hasn't gone away and can still be rewatched.

++ The Legend of Vox Machina season three trailer is out, and it looks spectacular.

++ In pleasantly surprising news, Seven Seas Entertainment has announced that the cnovel for Love Between Fairy And Devil is getting an official English translation! I adore the drama, and I've heard things about the novel here and there so I'm pretty intrigued to read it and seeing what the differences are. Also, I'm really curious about the artwork that'll be featured.
rogueslayer452: (BSG. OMG LOL Awesome.)
Is it Thursday yet? )

My Comments: Critical Role is an actual play TTRPG show, specifically of Dungeons & Dragons, that first started streaming their already ongoing campaign in 2015. It has since grown into something much bigger than they had ever anticipated. This fanvid is more of a celebration of where it all began and why I began watching in the first place, which was for the people involved and how engaging they were at telling this story. It only focuses on the first campaign, and at least midway through the first campaign, which is where I started when it was airing, so there aren't much spoilers. For those who have only seen The Legend of Vox Machina and know nothing about Critical Role, this will be a great fanvid to watch just to see the energy these people put out.

I also added a bonus video that is basically a supercut of all of the characters attempting to say Percy's full name. Just because.
rogueslayer452: (Daisy Johnson. Origin story.)
++ Two new communities have emerged: [community profile] raikantopeni for Thai dramas/media, and [community profile] cnovels for everythihg related to Chinese novels/webnovels.

++ Critical Role has announced the debut of Beacon.tv, their new special membership service which will have extra goodies including early access to their content, discounts on merchandise, pre-sales for live shows, among other things as listed in the package. Something I've seen people already loving is Critical Role Cooldown, which operates similarly to what Adventuring Party is to Dimension 20 where it's the cast immediate reactions directly after filming a session. I haven't signed up yet, I may wait a little bit before doing so (similarly to how I waited until finally signing up for Dropout), but so far the reactions have been quite positive so that's reassuring.

(This is certainly a better reception and better delivered than what Watcher Entertainment did with their disastrous announcement/launch of their streaming service, it's like night and day.)

++ So, there's going to be another Lord of the Rings movie in the works from Warner Bros with Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis attached supposedly called The Hunt for Gollum. Aside from already knowing that this is just Warner Bros capitalizing yet another known IP, I don't have much to say about this, really.
