Your turn to roll.
Oct. 27th, 2024 04:55 pm++ Good Omens has scrapped its planned third season and the show will end with just having one 90 minute "episode" (really just a movie wrap-up) due to the multiple sexual abuse allegations against Neil Gaiman. I've only read the book, which I enjoyed, but had no interest in watching the show so I have no horse in this race.
++ The Legend of Vox Machina has been renewed for a fourth season, which is unsurprising since it seems to be doing quite well, especially with bringing in newcomers to the story. I do have thoughts on what's been happening so far with it, since they have changed certain arcs and directions in the story including particular powerful character moments which has a bit of mixed reactions from fans, but overall I know that with any adaptation there will be changes to fit a new medium. Critical Role has over 400 hours worth of material from its first campaign alone, and only having thirteen half-hour seasons to go through and pick out which pivotal moments to leave in to keep the story going. Much of their game was streamed live and had such amazing moments improv'd, it's hard to recreate that kind of energy when doing an animated series of that campaign. What worked for their streaming might not always work when animated, it won't hit the same way especially much of it was based on the cast reactions to in-game decisions and dice rolls. Furthermore, Ashley Johnson was gone during the campaign most of the time whereas the animated series is allowing Pike to actually have an active arc that she never got to participate in.
At the end of the day, it's good to remember that the animated series is an extremely condensed version of the game itself, and while it's okay to feel disappointed in what was changed the actual campaign they played hasn't gone away and can still be rewatched.

Date: 2024-10-28 09:28 am (UTC)It really is. It's such a serious situation that they're kind of backed into a corner on how to proceed. I've seen suggestions floating around from people about how if Gaiman was exiting the show anyway they could still do the season, or that they cancel the show altogether. Ultimately, I think they went for the better option of just having a 90 minute episode movie to wrap things up, giving the cast/crew and the fans closure.
I was wondering about Sandman.

Date: 2024-11-01 11:12 am (UTC)That said, I'm not big into the fandom so I don't have such high stakes here anyway. I'm really sad for the very invested fans that it had to end like this, especially because cast and crew were awesome and there's so much potential. At least there's always fanfic...

Date: 2024-11-01 11:36 am (UTC)I've heard similar things from people who have watched the show as well, that the bridge between seasons should've just been a 90 minute episode instead, considering there were a lot of mixed reaction to season two. In fact, I wasn't even aware that S2 was actually a bridge between S1 (the first book) and the supposed unwritten sequel until all of this news came out.

Date: 2024-11-01 12:03 pm (UTC)I get why they wanted to flesh out all this stuff, as fans were super into the Aziraphle/Crowley dynamic and it was the most popular aspect of season one. So this felt a lot like fanservice, but it meandered too much and also, in times of streaming services cancelling shows left an right, it's always dangerous to assume there will be another season... and that#s without some shitty stuff about creators/actors coming out.
