Can television just stop killing off and mistreating women and minority characters? Seriously, enough is enough already.

This has always been an issue in media, as it sadly happens all the time, however within the last several weeks there have been an unfortunate amount of deaths of minorities on various programs. Even more so are some reported details that the actors involved were mistreated behind the scenes that prompted them wanting/needing to leave the show. From supporting to even main characters on their own damn show, they are being killed off in pointless, senseless fashions, or hell just written off with no reasonable explanation or even respect to the actors at all, that is severely disappointing and depressing. I'm not even in some of these fandoms, but I'm still bitter on their behalf nonetheless.

When you have a character of a marginalized group (women, LGBTQ+, racial minorities) who don't have much positive mainstream media representation to begin with, there is certain responsibility to uphold. We're not asking for special treatment, just treat these characters as human beings and not expendable objects by repeatedly perpetrating reprehensible tropes and stereotypes. Remember, representation does matter. When you have a minority character present in the story that is a conscious decision made and when said character is mistreated, that is a clear message you're sending to that particular audience. So don't act oblivious or surprised (or worse, holier-than-thou) when there is an uproar or backlash from the fanbase.

Also, while character deaths are never easy and are meant to be devastating, it should only be done when it is respectful to the character and their overall arc and presence in the story. The constant overuse and abuse of this "anyone can die" trope is not ~shocking or ~unexpected, but predictable, lazy writing that shows how little thought goes into it.

I just don't understand how certain books end up getting published and become immensely popular when they are ridiculously and embarrassingly horrible, and deeply problematic, to begin with. Let alone having certain "authors" be considered legit writers (lol) when they have had little understanding of how to write a cohesive story, especially when everyone knows that their work is literally published (bad) fanfiction of something equally as terrible.

Badly written books are published all the time, but how many of them end up getting this kind of publicity?

We really need to get more well-written, actual quality books to get the spotlight for a change, ones that are worthy of the hype. There are plenty out there by authors who have actually worked hard to get their work published and deserve recognition.

This has been a rant on something that has been bothering me for a while. Carry on.

The representation of demons possessing humans on Supernatural, and why the concept nowadays is incredibly problematic in itself... )

I kinda also want to address the whole "anything that isn't human deserves to be killed" aspect of the show, which is equally problematic. Never mind how the Winchesters, more often than not, tend to play God in deciding who lives or dies, and in deciding who is "more human" or not. Just, ugh. That is another rant for another time though. :/

I just heard the most ridiculous and inane argument ever regarding the casting of Watson and why someone is opposed and ~angry about it..... )

People are being so ridiculous and outrageous with this, I can't even. Everyone just needs to take a step back and chill the fuck out. It's getting way out of control from both sides at this point, far beyond mere just stating your opinion, and I'm kind of tired of hearing about it, tbh. And yeah, I kinda got a little worked up over what this one person said, but it's reflective on a common (and problematic) mindset and it really just struck a cord in me that I needed to let it out.

While I'm still processing and digesting everything from last night, gathering my emotions to make a coherent review, there is something that has been nagging at me for a while regarding Supernatural as presented loud and clear from last night. And I think this sums up my feelings on the situation very nicely:

Justice, impossible situations and misdirected anger as explained by Lee Adama, with my added thoughts of relevance to last night's episode/SPN in general )

Oh and yes, that is who you think it is in the clip.

This fucking pisses me off to no end.

I don't really watch the show anymore, only keep tabs on what current ~drama is happening, and the show has gotten to levels of ridiculous at this point. However this? The fact that they are defending abusive behavior is downright sickening and disgusting on so many levels. If not the delusions of the writers for glorifying this, the Chuck-defenders are even worse for stanning and woobifying him while blaming Blair for everything that went wrong in the relationship. Yes, because it's always her fault, never his right? It's always the girl in the relationship who gets the blame for everything, even if he is selling her out to his rapist uncle for a fucking hotel and nearly tried to rape her in the most recent episode? Are you serious right now?

No. Just, no. Fuck that bullshit. >:|

Anyone who doesn't see this as blatant abuse should kindly go fuck themselves with a chainsaw.

I can't believe I actually used to like them together. -__- Blair deserves better, someone who actually respects her as a person rather than as property. Chuck...deserves to be killed off in the more horrible manner possible. He's an irredeemable bastard and the fact that they're trying to defend his actions? Sickens me so much, I can't even.

I'm sure everyone's heard about the Justin Bieber fiasco by now. Quite frankly there are so many things that need to be said in what he said during that interview and the outrage that it rightfully created. However I think this pretty much sums up my thoughts and feelings on the entire issue, way better articulated than I could ever have done. Even if misquoted, his age and naivety are no excuse for the impact of his words and what it says about our society and how we view these things with the lack of education and empathy.

There are plenty of things that have enraged and disappointed me regarding the news and what's been happening politically. There's so much hatred and discrimination and people actually trying to justify and reason for it is absolutely disgusting and inhumane, I can't. -__-

But sometimes you get that spark of hope. Like learning that Hawaii approving civil unions for same-sex couples. ♥

So, I heard that Syfy canceled Stargate Universe recently. I admit I didn't watch the show and had heard certain...things about it from others that prompted me to not really bother with it, including that one bullshit wankery that happened with one of the creators of the show, but I know some people did watch and enjoyed it so believe me, I understand that hearing a show you've been watching has been abruptly canceled is a crushing and devastating feeling. Hell, even the actors discovered this news via Twitter, not even an official announcement or anything. It makes matters more lower than low because of it. :( First with Caprica and now with Stargate Universe, this has gotten me thinking and wondering: has the Syfy Network turned into the new FOX?

Both shows were continuations of their most successful franchises, and the network even stated that they were behind them because of that, and yet they pull shitty stunts like this. I had gotten the impression that Syfy was different in that they cared more about fan reactions than they did ratings, or at least not set high expectations for ratings like other networks do. It seems like I had been deluding myself. I know its the nature of the business, but it seems rather shady to me. Canceling two extensions of particular franchises is not the greatest way of making good with their viewers, just saying.

At least certain shows like Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Haven have been in good graces. Let's just hope it remains that way. Still, I'm not entirely pleased with the Syfy Network these days because of their shitty operations, since they're replacing these canceled shows with motherfucking wrestling. Like, whut? :/

On top of that there's also been certain wanking and anger-filled drama happening in certain communities I'm associated with, some in particular have resulted into victim-blaming and shaming of women and those people not even acknowledging or understanding the offensiveness of their comments. Or if they do, they justify it with an "oh I'm just stating my opinion" excuse and failing to have any kind of empathy whatsoever. It's despicable and disgusting and just, ugh. STOP IT WORLD, JUST STOP.

RANT TIME.

I hate stupid drivers on the road.

Okay seriously, you know the whole "turn right on red" rule? I always hate it whenever I'm the one up front and there's always some impatient little fucker behind me who ends up honking his horn or getting visibly impatient with me because I'm not turning right on a red light. Excuse me assholes, but I'm not about to risk my life by turning right when I know that it's not entirely safe, especially on certain intersections where traffic is hell and comes out of freaking nowhere. I have witnessed too many accidents where this happens, my sister was recently in one because she made a right on red turn and she's the most cautious driver I've ever known. So don't be acting all huffy and be on my ass just because I am not risking my life just so you can go wherever it is you gotta go. We all got places we got to be, but you can wait for a minute until the light turns green, it's not that big of a deal.

Next time when you're in front at the turn and you wanna risk your motherfucking ass on a crazy intersection, you can be my guest. But don't honk/act crazy/glare at me through your window as you pass me because I didn't do what you wanted me to do. I'm being a safe driver, you're just being an impatient motherfucker who needs to chillax and learn some manners on the road.

And this has happened to me more than once, and it's really pissing me off. Like seriously, what the actual fuck.

This rant was inspired by this fantabulously relevant video. ItsKingsleyBitch is the funniest and bestest ever, bitches better recognize. ♥

Due to recent events in fandom, I think it's time to address certain issues to anyone who reads my journal.

As someone who has opinions on various subjects, I don't appreciate being told to silence myself because others don't agree with my viewpoints. I have the right to say how I feel about something, especially if it's something that I truly care about. I can be heavily opinionated and critical at times along with very positive and optimistic, and I always try to rationalize and come to a common ground on such issues that I previously had a momentary reactionary response to. Because of what has happened in fandom there's been a huge divide, by those who express their opinions openly and those who think anyone that doesn't think highly of something are "haters" and are purely negative. I don't expect everyone to agree with my stances or opinions, in fact I encourage opposition because I do want to have civil debates and come to a middle ground on certain things in order to understand them better or gain a different perspective. Anyone who has known me for a while knows I do this with my meta discussions quite a bit. I have a reactionary response, and then the analytical part of my brain starts working. That's just how I roll.

Am I less of a fan for voicing my opinions on something I disagree with? Absolutely not. I feel that as fans we should be able to discuss our likes and dislikes about what is happening in fandom, because otherwise if we only spoke positively where would that get us? Not everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows, in fact when pointing out flaws and the mistakes and even speaking out against what is happening, it may be noticed and might be corrected if TPTB are listening to their audiences. This is the purpose of a fanbase, you see, and there are plenty of examples of this having been successful because of the fans making their voices known and heard by the masses.

I am not apologizing for speaking my mind on certain things, and I'm certainly not going to censor myself just because others disagree with my viewpoints and don't want to hear it.

Also, please note that being critical isn't the same as being negative. There's a massive difference between hating a particular fandom and hating the direction and how it's being handled. I think many are confusing the two, and while I understand people are still running on high emotions and being reactionary, it's getting to be ridiculous having to explain myself and defend my stance to those who don't understand or refuse to listen.
