I just don't understand how certain books end up getting published and become immensely popular when they are ridiculously and embarrassingly horrible, and deeply problematic, to begin with. Let alone having certain "authors" be considered legit writers (lol) when they have had little understanding of how to write a cohesive story, especially when everyone knows that their work is literally published (bad) fanfiction of something equally as terrible.

Badly written books are published all the time, but how many of them end up getting this kind of publicity?

We really need to get more well-written, actual quality books to get the spotlight for a change, ones that are worthy of the hype. There are plenty out there by authors who have actually worked hard to get their work published and deserve recognition.

This has been a rant on something that has been bothering me for a while. Carry on.

I HAVE BASICALLY NOTHING TO ADD TO THIS EXCEPT A SONOROUS, DEEPLY-FELT THIS.

Especially as someone writing a series which will one day be subjected to agents and publishers and all that, it's very ... disheartening that so much crap with flashy hooks and next to no understanding of basic grammar or style gets six figure deals and perpetual slots on the NYT bestseller list. How can people read stuff like that, let alone en masse?!

Seriously. I mean, I know it's to each their own when it comes to liking something that might not be the best thing. But when it rises into sudden popularity and becomes a national bestseller, you really have to question how this came to be and why and what the fuck are people smoking if they think this is considered literature?!

But it's not about quality, unfortunately. Look at all the trashy reality tv, for example. People know it's bad but they watch it anyway.

There's a lot of politics going into this. You can write an amazing novel and miraculously get it published, but if it's not ~flashy enough to stir national attention then it will only be seen as the rare gems that never got a chance. It's unfortunate and it makes me appreciate the writers that actually make the effort to create a story instead of pulling out the trashiest nonsense from the asses in hoping to be famous.

This. So much this. And I hate even more that so much of stuff that is written for women is riddled with really bad stuff that can actually effect women (and especially teenage girls) in bad ways. Is it too much to ask to get well-written, non-offensive stuff with interesting/well-written characters, good plots, great world building, and fun storylines? These things do exist, so why do things without them get published and become more popular than the good stuff?

Your Dany icon is awesome.

Unfortunately, the publishing industry (like any other industry) only cares for what sells, not for the quality or the message.

It's just so sad and infuriating, the fact that such popular books have horrible messages to women and young girls and those problematic messages are being glorified should be red flags to everyone. And the authors are being "praised" for the bullshit they spew and it's like, what the fuck? Seriously. idgi

Every time I hear Twilight referred to as "the immensely popular Twilight series", I go, "Huh? That can't be accurate."

That book was just one of the examples I was going for, but there are others out there in the same category as that piece of illiteracy.

Not a book, but I just saw an ad for a movie "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter". I... just... why?! Stop producing just any old idea that crosses your minds, people! Entertainment is supposed to be intelligent!

Actually, it is a book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln,_Vampire_Hunter).

lol, that obvious huh? ;p

But seriously, that book is just the latest in the category of shitty books written by inadequate writers who should never be allowed to write anything ever again, yet still get popularity and praise.

This one in particular (http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/69746322.html) still angers me on so many levels. >:|

Lmao I saw that the other day and was like "........................."

So I bought my mum a Kindle for her birthday, and I got it on my amazon account, so it's linked to my account and every time she buys a book on it I get an email notification about it.

Like two months ago I got an email at 2am from amazon thanking me for purchasing 50 SHADES OF FUCKING GREY. And I died inside ten million times.

Then the next day I yelled at my mum and berated her and tore her a new one for like an hour.

I practically have warned everyone I know about that book, telling them don't buy it. If they're curious go online and read the excerpts, and those that did were horrified by how terrible it was.

My sister is an employee at Barnes and Noble and she's annoyed that she can't say anything to warn the customers who are curious about the book, lol.

It's been broken for a long while.

I mean, there are good things being published all the time, but only the trashiest, poorly written ones end up getting the most attention. For whatever reason, I don't know. It's like whoever is reviewing them and putting them on the "bestsellers list" appears to be quite illiterate if they think such things are considered literature. *sigh*

lol. I see this post and think, 'This is must be about that Twilight copypasta book' because there is no other book at the moment that's making waves. The book market is over saturated with badly written books aimed at girls/women. I think it's sad that books like Twilight and such are even considered as amazing and reach the best sellers list.

I'm just thinking of all these so-called authors (Cassandra Claire, Stephanie Meyer and now E.L. James) getting popular for just being pure bullshitters and horrible examples of the writing community.

I consider them the reality tv celebrities of the writing world, tbh.

My friend at work was thinking of buy 50 Shades of Gray because of all the press and asking me about it. I haven't read it but I have heard mixed reviews on it so maybe I should warn them off it.

Definitely warn them, because from what I've seen (i.e. excerpts, dramatic readings of it, discussions of the subject matter and how it's presented, etc) it's absolutely the most horrible (or hilariously sad depending on how you look at it) and the most offensive piece of trash to ever become popular (right alongside Twilight, ironically so since it is literally published bad fanfic of that, just with the names changed.)

Not to mention it gives a tremendously poor misrepresentation of BDSM, including consent issues among other things, which is highly problematic in and of itself.

So yeah, definitely tell your friend to spare themselves the eye-bleed and cringing from second-hand embarrassment.

Oh, and it's so sexually inaccurate, even the authors of bad romance novels are cringing.

It's like an 11-year-old attempting to write porn without understanding the mechanics of how sex actually works. It's so embarrassing. It literally is badfic, like the bottom of the barrel badfic.

*facepalm*

My guess is that they push some kind of button for the reader, other than that I got nothing. One good thing about badly written books is that when I say 'even I could write better than that' is is true.

Seriously.

It's sad because it really says something (not so good) about the publishing industry. It also doesn't send a good message to inspiring writers, either. It's like, you can write all you want, but if you ever want to get your shit to sell it literally has to be shittier than shit because apparently, that's what people like reading nowadays! -__-
