I just don't understand how certain books end up getting published and become immensely popular when they are ridiculously and embarrassingly horrible, and deeply problematic, to begin with. Let alone having certain "authors" be considered legit writers (lol) when they have had little understanding of how to write a cohesive story, especially when everyone knows that their work is literally published (bad) fanfiction of something equally as terrible.

Badly written books are published all the time, but how many of them end up getting this kind of publicity?

We really need to get more well-written, actual quality books to get the spotlight for a change, ones that are worthy of the hype. There are plenty out there by authors who have actually worked hard to get their work published and deserve recognition.

This has been a rant on something that has been bothering me for a while. Carry on.

My friend at work was thinking of buy 50 Shades of Gray because of all the press and asking me about it. I haven't read it but I have heard mixed reviews on it so maybe I should warn them off it.

Definitely warn them, because from what I've seen (i.e. excerpts, dramatic readings of it, discussions of the subject matter and how it's presented, etc) it's absolutely the most horrible (or hilariously sad depending on how you look at it) and the most offensive piece of trash to ever become popular (right alongside Twilight, ironically so since it is literally published bad fanfic of that, just with the names changed.)

Not to mention it gives a tremendously poor misrepresentation of BDSM, including consent issues among other things, which is highly problematic in and of itself.

So yeah, definitely tell your friend to spare themselves the eye-bleed and cringing from second-hand embarrassment.

Oh, and it's so sexually inaccurate, even the authors of bad romance novels are cringing.

It's like an 11-year-old attempting to write porn without understanding the mechanics of how sex actually works. It's so embarrassing. It literally is badfic, like the bottom of the barrel badfic.

*facepalm*
