My sleeping patterns are problematic.
Jun. 7th, 2009 07:08 am++ Apparently my sleep schedules gone whacked for reasons stated previously in my RL post, I don't know whether it's insomnia or I'm oversleeping via naps and I have just screwed myself over from that entirely. And you know those nights where you're trying to fall asleep but just can't no matter how hard you try? Yeah, just had one of those nights. Not fun. Le sigh.
++ WONDER GIRLS will be making their American debut! First BoA and now Wonder Girls? I'm liking this sudden change of pace of Asian artists making their headway into the Western music scene, and this has me hoping that they'll collaborate together. The unfortunate thing is they'll be touring with the freaking Jonas Brothers. Srsly JYP, the JoBros? Srsly? I'm sorry, but WONDER GIRLS >>>> JOBROS ANYDAY. They are way too classy for that shit. Nevertheless though, it's the marketing strategy to gain more audiences here which I understand, and judging from the articles coming out with this news they are suggesting that the girls won't be changing their style other than translating their lyrics from Korean to English, so that's good. Hopefully they'll break out onto their own after getting their first exposure to the American audiences, and I'm sure they will. 'Cause they are just that amazingly fierce like that.
++ New fandoms are shiny and fun. I've just started getting into Numb3rs (I know, where've I been right?) and kinda loving it actually. The Big Bang Theory is too hilarious for words, like really. I've also just started watching the Korean drama 90 Days, Falling In Love Days which is a drama dealing with the taboo of two first cousins falling in love in something like a Romeo and Juliet drama story in a sense. I've just begun and am on the second episode, but so far I'm liking it, even if the subbing sucks ass. More on new fandoms discovered for later when I have something coherent to say about them.
++ Reading spoilers for Heroes next season and I have to say, I'm not entirely impressed. It seems like the same-old schtick they've been doing for the last three seasons now, aside from the casting spoilers that have been announced. I don't know, not enthusiastic to be honest.
++ MISHA COLLINS MANIPPED HIMSELF! Everyone's seen this already but I don't care, it's worth reposting again and again because it's MISHA FUCKING COLLINS AND HE FUCKING MANIPPED HIMSELF INTO A PICTURE WITH HIS CRAZY TWITTERING!! ♥ ♥ ♥ When he said he was a fangirl in disguise, he certainly wasn't lying. Oh Mish Mish, how did we ever deserve someone like you? ♥

Date: 2009-06-07 07:32 pm (UTC)It's sad because I loved the show during S1 and even S2, but S3 is where I was turned off completely. Just from watching that premiere it didn't feel like the same show, everything was so scattered and a fucking mess, not even Mohinder's pretty could make me continue watching the show (which I didn't see much about him in those descriptions, or have they forgotten him too?) So much potential show, and you blew it with craptastic storylines just to make things interesting without giving any regard to continuity and characterizations. *shakes head*

Date: 2009-06-07 07:42 pm (UTC)I think that it's somewhat obvious that the show was beginning to unravel near the end of the first season--they had too many ideas they were trying to fit in, added to the fact they had these "break out stars" they had to keep around, etc.
If Mohinder's in it any less I am going to freak the fuck out. And the lack of Mohinder and Sylar interaction is pissing me off SO MUCH. I have never heard of a sci-fi show that didn't at least TRY to appease the fangirls by giving ONE OR TWO scenes between characters. Fuck, look at how long SG-1 lasted, and that gave us one guy leaving another guy's office naked except for a flag wrapped around him and no explanation! And I'm not saying this solely as a slasher, but as someone who really enjoyed their fucked up bromance. Also, the constant focus on Claire and Ali Larter's characters as the main females drives me nuts--practically every other female character (except Maya) was better than they are.

Date: 2009-06-07 08:05 pm (UTC)Mohinder was the only good thing about the show until late, and if they minimize his character I'll be so pissed like, seriously. I loved Hayden and Ali, still do, but I agree they should have more kickass females on the show (hell, they should've kept Daphne as the kickass spunky girl she was and not have her in that stupid love thing with Matt).

Date: 2009-06-07 08:16 pm (UTC)I LOVE Mohinder. I can't stand all the Mohinder-hate. I like that he's always kinda waffling between morality and science, that he wants to do the good thing but isn't always sure what that is. It makes him fascinating and it makes him human. Fuck, I even like that he has super strength now, because it's possibly the most stupid, worthless power to give someone like him and that makes it kinda ironically awesome.
That's another thing--why the fuck do the females have to be someone's love interest? Excuse me, but I'm pretty sure I don't spend every significant moment of my life being with someone, or even crushing on someone. Elle was best before that bullshit Sylar stuff, same with Daphne and the Matt nonsense. And Monica was awesome just being her, too. The writers already make them some guy's nemesis or daugher or cousin, why the hell do they need to be defined by a male?

Date: 2009-06-07 10:14 pm (UTC)It's funny since I've been with the show since it premiered, and thought it was amazing how they can interconnect all the characters and they were able to have everyone's own story connected to the bigger picture. But that seems to have been dwindled away and they've forgotten the heart of what made the show so amazing in season one. The fact they can have such a huge ensemble cast but still maintain all their storylines, keeping with the characterizations and even continuity where everything made sense.
I don't understand the Mohinder-hate, either. I love him, I felt like he was the only character that the audience could relate to because he didn't have any special abilities and was just figuring things out as it went along. Trying to rationalize everything through scientific research and being awed and fascinated at the same time; that whole "ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation" thing. I was bummed that they had him experiment with injecting himself with a power and even let him keep the superstrength, but idk. Either way, I still love him. He IS the moral compass of the show, even when people were hating on him for shooting HRG in S2 he still had that morality to him which made him the most human character (I even had a meta written up defending him because of that incident, which is in the same mindset of SPN fans thinking Castiel was a "dick" because of his behavior in the end of 4.20 and 4.21 which, wtf? Think perspectively folks, my God). If they lose Mohinder to something stupid like the previous characters before him, I will be uber pissed.
why the fuck do the females have to be someone's love interest? Excuse me, but I'm pretty sure I don't spend every significant moment of my life being with someone, or even crushing on someone.
Oh God this, totally. I liked it when it was all subtle, but the constant thing of having unnecessary romance or hookups is just something that turns me off. It's as though a storyline is only good if there's romance tied to it, making the characters "connected" or some shit like that. I didn't really mind the Peter/Simone/Isaac triangle in S1 because they did set that one up, but everything else? Horrible. Seriously show, if you want to make everyone a whore, at least do it constructively and not at random just for ratings.
Yeah. This is why I left the fandom. I do still keep tabs on the show because I do want it to get better, Bryan Fuller admitted to these mistakes and he wants to fix that, but how that'll be done I have no idea.

Date: 2009-06-07 10:38 pm (UTC)Recent Heroes has been like someone went in there knowing Heroes only from bad ffnet fics and started writing all the episodes. They drop shit that's important just because they're not good enough writers to work it in, they discard entire storylines and character points, they kill off characters that could have been well-used in future plots and keep on characters that are worn out and boring....
Ugh, I don't get either Mohinder hate OR Castiel hate. I especially hate the Castiel hate because, hello, angel! People like various demonic characters for all their fucked up shit and yet Castiel acts like angels in SPN act and suddenly he's horrible? I would have preferred Mohinder didn't get powers, especially because that entire storyline was such a 4400 ripoff. I had always thought that, if they continued with this archenemy thing with Sylar and Mohinder (which I always found more interesting than Peter vs. Sylar, because that's so obvious and the fact that a mere human can stand up to Sylar was awesome), that they could have done something like, like sometimes in comics, where the villains make sure the heroes can't die just so they can torment them longer. Like, Sylar getting Claire's ability and finding a way to force it on Mohinder, with the knowledge that someday there's only going to be, like, four or five of them left. Like I said, I love their fucked up bromance, it harkens to comic books where a lot of times the archenemies aren't enemies because they're polar opposites, but because they're freakishly similar in all but a few important ways.
I didn't mind the Peter/Simone/Isaac thing, either, because it was written to feel natural. Much like I didn't mind Niki/DL. Or, hell, even Eden/Mohinder. It just seems like, at some point, the writers decided to fall back on the same thing pretty much EVERY tv show does--having it necessary for the females to be defined by their relationships with the males in the show. They don't get to be their own people, they only get to be mothers/daughters/lovers/etc. And in Heroes this meant they actually interrupted a lot of characterization, making the females feel even less real than they already were. I can deal with the bullshit of so many people being related or having parents who were part of the Company or whatever, but it doesn't have to go further. Sometimes a friend can just be a friend, or an enemy can just be an enemy, for that matter. Since Heroes is one of the freaking most cliched shows on TV, you'd think they'd look at some of the more successful sci-fi shows, the ones that managed to last for multiple season, because a lot of the ones I can think of had strong females who, if they were in relationships, developed relationships over an entire season, not, like, a shitty episode.
I think they should put it out of its mercy and do a spin-off or something. Everyone's into reboots, they should just do a Heroes reboot.

Date: 2009-06-07 11:11 pm (UTC)LOL, yeah pretty much that's how it seems.
I especially hate the Castiel hate because, hello, angel! People like various demonic characters for all their fucked up shit and yet Castiel acts like angels in SPN act and suddenly he's horrible?
Exactly. I mean, not everyone is going to like him and I understand that, and some of the majority of the complaints have been the irrational "he's gonna get between the boys!" thing which in itself is ridiculous. But how people reacted to seeing him in those two episodes? It's as though they couldn't think outside the box or place the situation into perspective, Castiel being watched continuously after being dragged back to Heaven, on a tighter leash, and people called him a douche for that? That really irritates me about some folks in fandom.
I've found the dynamic between Mohinder and Sylar intriguing, as well, and wished they'd continued on with that. I mean, they did for a while but it's like they stopped what made their entire connection so strong, you know? I could go on about that but I think you understand my love for them. :)
Sometimes a friend can just be a friend, or an enemy can just be an enemy, for that matter.
Precisely. Also, when in doubt, use subtext. That's how most fandoms thrive on anyway, the subtext between characters that it can be either romantic or platonic depending on how you view it, and everyone's happy. It's also funny because didn't Tim Kring mention before in an interview post-S2 that the show wasn't built on romance? And yet they still are going on with the pointlessness of it.
This is why I've learned to not trust what Kring says, because it's always the opposite of what he promises the fans.
I think they should put it out of its mercy and do a spin-off or something. Everyone's into reboots, they should just do a Heroes reboot.
I would've liked to have seen what Heroes: Origins would've been like had they not shelved it indefinitely. I'm kinda biased and want a Mohinder spin-off, with him going around the world discovering all people with powers and such. That would be neat. ;)

Date: 2009-06-07 11:23 pm (UTC)That's what they couldn't understand. Because some fans are just bratty teenagers no matter what their age and they don't understand that some characters are going to have higher authorities to worry about. Not everyone can be Sam and Dean saying "fuck you" to everyone and doing their own thing. I mean, hell, Castiel toeing the line was probably to protect the boys. And, yeah, I'm totally biased because I was barely watching the last season and then Castiel's what dragged me back to the show, but "coming between the boys"?! If nothing ever came between the boys, half the episodes wouldn't exist! And, for that matter, Castiel is FAR less likely to interfere in their relationship than anyone else.
Also, when in doubt, use subtext.
How many shows succeed BECAUSE of subtext? How many shows have a male lead and a female lead and half of what draws the audience in is waiting for the day they'll finally realize they're perfect for each other? That's far more interesting than badly manufactured "romances."
I think Mohinder would be a very good basis for a spin-off. I've always felt he was one of the characters that should be preserved, as he's not only often a catalyst for various events and meetings, but his very nature allows for him to move around and become involved in many different sorts of events. If anything, they should have become more focused on him, on him being a human surrounded by all of this, giving us things from his perspective more than anyone else's. I always hoped that the second season would involve him hunting for Sylar, actually, or playing a cat-and-mouse game against him. I think how Heroes keeps trying to have bigger and bigger catastrophes (that all fall flat) is also one of the failings of the show--it was best when the problems were on more personal levels.

Date: 2009-06-08 02:16 am (UTC)Definitely, because he knows and understands Dean loves his brother more than anything else and vice versa, and would never come between them ever. If anyone sees Castiel as a potential threat because of that worry, that are delusional.
That's far more interesting than badly manufactured "romances."
So much word to this, you don't even know.
If anything, they should have become more focused on him, on him being a human surrounded by all of this, giving us things from his perspective more than anyone else's.
I wholeheartedly agree with this notion. There were so many directions they could've gone, and I would've loved seeing where we could have gone with them. Mohinder had connections to almost all the characters and linked everyone together, but he had his own story and I was intrigued, with his family background, with Shanti, with his research, everything. I kinda expected S2 to focus on Mohinder's past a bit, because I think they mentioned that before but it didn't follow through.
I think how Heroes keeps trying to have bigger and bigger catastrophes (that all fall flat) is also one of the failings of the show--it was best when the problems were on more personal levels.
Yep, they're more concerned about the plots rather than the characters, which makes us, the audience, feel detached from these characters because there's nothing real about their stories anymore. I'm more interested in their personal journeys than whatever shiny explosion thing they have planned. Continuity to the development of the character along with the progression of the season plotline, that is the key and it is something they've lost sight of, which is driving a lot of people away.
