Heroes: "Genesis" Mini-Review

My initial reactions to tonights premiere of Heroes.
This isn't going to be a full-length review like others have been in the past, but I just wanted to express my first impressions of this new series. I absolutely loved it. Like, really. I knew I was to be anticipating it since I saw the previews, and tonight justice was served as my predictions of adding a brand new fandom to my list came true.
One of the things that I liked about the pilot was how wonderfully paced it was. The sequence of events, the connection and relationship of characters, all seemed intertwined perfectly. Introducing each character not by them discovering their abilities, but them discovering that their special abilities may be something more. Like with the girl cheerleader Claire. The boy she was around seemed so enthralled with her gift of invulnerability, yet she seemed not that concerned or excited over it, indicating that she's had this ability for quite some time yet never completely revealed it to anyone but herself (plus seeing her family-life, who would believe her anyway, or any of the others for that matter?) I liked the monologue in the beginning and in the end, and the style and feel of the show is very unique. I liked it, a lot.
The character I'm liking so far is Niki Sanders, for the obvious reason that I wanted to start watching the series in the first place being Ali Larter, and the mysterious ability of hers...like, almost a Dr. Jekall/Mr. Hyde alter ego kind of deal. I really liked the Indian guy, who sort of reminds me of Sayid from LOST (e.g. the knowledge of things that the other characters do not, or have not been exposed to yet). And dude, that's freaking Milo Ventimiglia from Gilmore Girls portraying the character of Peter! Quite an ensemble cast --- and yes, it was hilarious that in the Japanese bar/karaoke they were lipsyncing to the Backstreet Boys. Much love for that part, and the hilarity of Hiro!
So yes, I'm totally sold on this series, and I'm curious to where this all leads in future episodes. Damn you NBC for getting me interested in yet another fandom!
Catch Heroes, Mondays at 9:00pm on NBC.

Date: 2006-09-26 05:40 am (UTC)I also LOVED Claire and Hiro, though. Hiro is nice as comic relief, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's up with Claire and what happens with her dad.

Date: 2006-09-26 05:50 am (UTC)Oh, most definitely. I think that out of all the character storylines, Niki's was gripping and intriguing. Particularly because her "ability" is somewhat different than the others. Like, everyone else has some form of identifiable special gift, but hers is something else entirely. Is it an evil alter ego? Another personality that protects (or harms) those of her surroundings? Is it a force that only appears whenever she's underneath an ordeal or panic? It's a complex thing, and I'm anticipating to see what's revealed about that.
Hiro is so funny, but the adorable kind of funny. I liked the beginning that he cheered in victory of manipulating time. Hee.

Date: 2006-09-26 10:32 pm (UTC)I can't hardly imagine waiting that long for another new episode for a particular fandom. Especially for a new series that really strikes my curiosity and interest. It's like waiting for a season premiere of a favorite show after its finale, you just have to hang in there, trying not to have brains explode from such a long wait! Already a day after seeing the Heroes premiere I'm really wanting to see where it all leads to.
Hee, of course I would end up loving it! The previews sort of drew me in, naturally as they were supposed to, and the premise sounded interesting. And last night I was completely psyched, and it ceased to disappoint. LOVE IT! Already I'm doing speculations for some of the character's storylines and theories of their powers (mainly for Claire and Niki). :D

Awesome :) Between the premise and the cast, I was like "Okay, must watch" and then people where telling me it was actually GOOD. I think Heroes and Studio 60 were like, the only things people on my friends list seemed genuinely excited about for fall. And maybe The Nine.
Let's just hope it sticks around for a while so we get to find out what they've got planned *crosses fingers*

Date: 2006-09-26 11:31 pm (UTC)I too had been anticipating this show. I caught the last 45mins and I love it. I love this show.
Who is the creator? It has Greg Grundberg in it and On Studio 60 (which I also love) I saw that Snuffy Walden who did Felicity's music is doing theirs. So many connection.
Milo Ventimiglia is everywhere I really like him. I loved Bedford Diaries and now this... Hiro is such a great character. Love him....
NBC has a winning night but what happened to Medium?

Date: 2006-09-26 11:58 pm (UTC)The creator of Heroes is Tim Kring; I've heard nice things about On Studio 60 but I haven't watched a full episode. Milo definitely is everywhere, I almost didn't recognize him....the last I saw of Milo was when he appeared on Gilmore Girls (wasn't necessarily a fan of the character he played, Jess), but he certainly has matured, appearance-wise and in his acting. Hiro is just too funny, and his enthusiasm is so great.
It's been confirmed from reports that Medium will be returning in January and will be on Sunday nights at 10:00pm. It'll be midseason, but it's definitely coming back for a third season so don't worry. :)
