Of course, not everyone read the books, but I do think it's a big factor with HP. Personally, I know people (including myself) that started reading because of HP. But you're right, it does fit all of the other nerdy movie franchises happening at the time.
Now you really only have the MCU as THE big franchise, but it's not like others aren't trying. They just never take off. It's really too bad for people who aren't into superheroes or are just tired of them. I have watched the first Fantastic Beasts by now and it had potential to be a great new HP/fantasy franchise, but that also didn't work out.
