Over the course of October I unexpectedly revisited two shows that fit the mood and vibe of the season: American Horror Story (Murder House and Coven, respectively) and Ravenswood. And I kind of wanted to write my retrospective thoughts on both.

American Horror Story: 'Murder House' and 'Coven' )

American Horror Story is a strange little show. It's an anthology series with recurring actors portraying different roles and none of the seasons really connect to one another, aside from American Horror Story: Apocalypse it seems, the promos and opening title sequences are more creepy in their aesthetics than the actual show is, and while it's still ongoing I barely hear much about the show these days. The last I heard about it was the season with Lady Gaga, only because it was Lady Gaga who was playing a vampire. Needless to say, Murder House and Coven remain my favorites and I enjoyed revisited them.

Ravenswood )

In short, Ravenswood may have been a spin-off but it really was a show that stood on its own and had its own identity that existed outside of the main series and it deserved so much better.

October is here.

Not just the month of my birthday, but also the month of Halloween, one of my favorite holidays next to Christmas. So I figure, why not have a meme?

Here we have all the spoopy... )

Even though I've not been impressed with the show lately, American Horror Story still does the most amazing title sequences. It's perhaps the only good thing despite the mediocrity of the show at times. I haven't been that interested in the new seasons, not since the first and third season (with the third starting off strong but ended up being kind of a disappointment, imho), though I may end up checking the season out once its finished and if it's been getting a positive reaction from others. I know some people that think having Lady Gaga featured this season is a gimmick, and it may very well be (this is Ryan Murphy after all, remember Glee and all its celebrity guest stars?), but seeing the promotional material she does seem to fit right in with the theme, and I am honestly curious as to what her character is about.

I'm also going to be seeing Crimson Peak since it does come out on my birthday. It's both because it's a Guillermo del Toro film (gorgeous in both the scenery and the costumes and guaranteed to possibly have a gorgeous and terrifying story as well) and also because I am test-watching it for my sister, who doesn't like scary movies but wants to watch it for Hiddleston yet wants me to tell her how prepared she must be for it. I may even have to watch it a second time so I can warn her about when the jump scares happen. Heh.

It's around that time of the year where shows are about to return for the fall television season, along with some news ones will be premiering as well. I have plenty of shows and fandoms that will be coming back, but there are quite a few new ones that I am seriously considering watching, or at least be testing the waters of.

++ American Horror Story: Coven. I'll admit that I didn't watch the second season as it didn't hold my interest as the first season did, which I loved. However I may watch Coven since the focus of the Salem witch trials and the witchcraft vs. voodoo seems rather fascinating. Season premieres October 9th on FX.

++ Sleepy Hollow. I had heard about this, and I wasn't quite sure what it was about until recently, and the trailer looks really good. Will definitely see if the show itself holds up to expectations. Series premiere September 16th on FOX.

++ Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. Spin-off of Once Upon A Time, and while I have ceased watching that show (for the time being, until it catches my interest again), I will say that this does intrigue me a bit. It's like a Return to Oz version of Wonderland, with some added romance. Assuming that they'll be keeping with a minimal of characters, perhaps this may actually go over better than its predecessor. It premieres October 10th on ABC.

++ Official teaser trailer for Ravenswood, the Pretty Little Liars spin-off. It's just a stylized trailer with no actual footage, but it looks interesting and we get a glimpse at the new characters that will be introduced, along with a familiar face that will be crossing over from Pretty Little Liars. We've already seen bits of Ravenswood on the show and the entire atmosphere holds something rather ominous and foreboding, so I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. The series premieres October 22nd on ABC Family, directly following the Halloween special.

I just started watching American Horror Story, and I can honestly say that it has definitely captured my attention.

It's morbidly fascinating and unique in its own strange way, unsettling and disturbing in places, but intriguing nonetheless. I knew what to expect based on spoilers I saw beforehand, but watching it is an entirely different experience altogether. It still came unexpectedly to what I was actually seeing. Like, it's that one show where afterwards you don't know what the hell you just watched, but at the same time you are completely fascinated that your curiosity has you continuing onto the next episode.

I have the rest of the season to watch, so we'll see how this goes.
