Just a brief overview of my thoughts with these Asian dramas that I've been keeping up with.

4 MINUTES

This Thai BL is more than it seems, the trailer in itself was intriguing enough but the way that the drama unfolds leaves the audience wondering what the hell is going on. Honestly, the summary description of the drama is intentionally misleading for a reason.

Although only eight episodes, it delivers quite an emotional punch. 4 Minutes is more of a tragedy, with the ending being a little bittersweet but still tragic all the same. No character escapes unscathed, from the mains to the supporting. The characters of Great (Bible Wichapas) and Tyme (Jes Jespipat) have incredible chemistry from all angles, since we're first introduced to them from Great's mind reconstructing their first meeting to the actual timeline in reality of how their characters were to each other, and seeing the reason behind their motivations, their behaviors and actions, but also why Great's (and eventually Tyme's) dying brain rewrites the past to being softer and happier than reality. It's devastating and depressing, since we see the potential of what could have been, what their subconscious minds wanted to happen instead of the reality that was. In their alternate realities their minds created, they got a happy ending while both of them died separately, alone, and at the same time.

(There's also the situation between Korn, Tonkla, and Win, which I also found interesting though mostly due to the Tonkla/Win dynamic a bit more, having a cop fall for a suspect and basically become slightly corrupted by said suspect only for that to not go over so well in the end, again, it being a tragedy based on an act of revenge from Tonkla.)

FANGS OF FORTUNE

Another drama of tragedy just in a different flavor, the wuxia cdrama Fangs of Fortune has a great blend of action, mystery, and fantasy as it is about demons, mythological creatures and the mortal realm. The drama has a great amount of amazing visuals (special effects, practical sets, and costumes), performances, and a kind of bisexual polycule between the main group of characters that is impossible to ignore, but most importantly the way the story itself unfolds is fascinating. We know that it'll end in tragedy, but it's how the story moves along with how the characters and their dynamics with one another that makes it all impactful towards the end. Like, how Zhuo Yichen is determined to kill Zhao Yuanzhou, a promise he intends on keeping, but the tragedy of it being how close they got over the course of the drama, the building of trust and understanding (especially after Zhuo Yichen got himself possessed and understood what Zhao Yuanzhou went through) that when the deed needed to be done he was upset about it. It's something I clocked immediately and knew it was going to be sad yet juicy, and it didn't disappoint.

As I learned, the drama is based around information found in The Classic of Mountains and Seas, which is a collection of ancient Chinese mythology and geography, which is fascinating in itself and makes for understanding the context of what the story is about, especially with the true demon forms of the characters (as seen here in this gifset.

THE NEXT PRINCE

A Thai BL that is currently airing, but what I have seen makes me absolutely giddy.

As mentioned previously, this is essentially the Thai BL version of The Princess Diaries but a gay version featuring not just one royal/bodyguard pairing but multiple ones, and the narrative is far juicier. Khanin and Charan have quite a wonderful dynamic already, which I'm looking forward to seeing more of it develop seeing as how they clearly have feelings for one another and that Khanin doesn't care about the power and class imbalance between them (especially since he just learned he's of royal blood) which is going to nice to see where it goes, but I'm also intrigued by the Ramil and Paytai relationship. Someone pointed out how Ramil is very similar to Kinnporsche's Vegas, which I now cannot unsee.

I'm very curious to see where things go, for the character arcs and relationships and whatever familial and political drama will spark because of it. Either way, I'm having a delightful time with this drama.

PIT BABE

I'm behind on the second season of Pit Babe, also still currently airing, however it's been quite a ride (no pun intended) so far, as to be expected with the plot of such a story. Kinky things between couples (Babe/Charlie with their Mama/Papa petname roleplay and Alan/Jeff calling each other "uncle" and "kid"), more confirmation that yes this is an Omegaverse-adjacent world with scenting and Alpha genetics, Charlie is being quite a dom with Babe for jealousy and possessive reasons, Tony and "Way" have returned from the dead with the latter returning as an American which leads a lot of questions. There's a lot of exploration of the other characters and couples this go around and it's interesting to see all of them get their specific arcs happening.

Honestly, I'm just having the time of my life with the Omegaverse of it all, and I'm just hoping that at some point someone will be pregnant. Yes, it's quite low in the priority list, but they have established that this is a possibility and has been a major plot point as to why Charlie was assigned to be with Babe (as part of Tony's human trafficking ring), so I'm just like, y'know, let us have that mpreg.

I've also been quite curious about My Golden Blood, a Thai BL vampire drama, just based on what I've seen that's come across my Tumblr dash I'm intrigued and, of course, vampirism is quite sexy.

4 Minutes was definitely unexpected! The combination of explicit BL with slightly fantasy-touched police/crime drama was new for me. I loved it a lot, despite everything being so tragic and the reality parts not working out well for anyone.

The Next Prince and Golden Blood are also on my list, I hope I'll get around to them eventually.
