++ American Gods has been cancelled after three seasons. Let's be honest, this was inevitable and unsurprising considering the amount of controversy surrounding everything that occurred behind-the-scenes. From the constant hiring and firing of showrunners and cast members leaving or being fired along with the racism and mistreatment of some of those cast members, the entire production was just a trashfire mess. And not an entertaining way either, but in a "how can you continuously fuck up this badly?" kind of way. I barely heard anything about the show itself after the first season, only the behind-the-scenes drama that just kept getting worse and worse. It's disappointing and a damn shame since the show started out incredibly strong with a fantastic first season and had real potential of being something spectacular, but they just kept fucking things up.
++ Apparently a local convention is decidedly happening this weekend (I know, I wtf'd too), preventing people from getting their vaccinations in the building that it is being held. This has created an outrage, and rightfully so. Listen, I miss going to conventions as much as the next person who attends these things and I know businesses are massively struggling during this time, but this is still incredibly too soon. I cannot foresee in-person conventions happening in the near-future because, aside from the pandemic still happening I just don't trust people at this point in time to follow the simple standard health guidelines (people are still being entitled and selfish when it comes to wearing a goddamn mask, ffs). I hope the event gets cancelled, because not only is this incredibly unsafe but it's also just moronic as hell. In the grand scheme of things, people's health and safety should come first and are more important than an anime convention.

Date: 2021-03-31 06:56 pm (UTC)The first season is really good. I mean, Bryan Fuller did the first season so obviously it's fantastic.
There's no way a convention is going to be able to actually maintain that distance at all times.
Exactly! I would even say, in some years time, once vaccinations have been issued to most of the population, I wouldn't feel comfortable being in an enclosed space with a bunch of people. Conventions in particular are known for being incredibly crowded and people tend to get sick on the daily from being there anyway, and hygiene is a continuous issue in general in those spaces, so I wouldn't feel comfortable or safe in a space like that. Having outside events -- conventions, concerts, drive-in movie theaters -- might actually be okay, having a large amount of space for people to distance themselves. But that can also easily get out of control, especially if there's no limit to the amount of people who attend and people still aren't taking the necessary precautions.
This has been something that most of us are grappling with because not only do we have to look after ourselves (wearing masks and whatnot) but also we have to hyperaware of everyone else around us as well. If someone is not wearing a mask/not wearing a mask properly, if they're not distancing themselves, if they're too close, etc. Just based off of how a large portion of people have acted during this last year regarding the pandemic, it has led me to not trust others in public spaces. The fact that we have to do that not just to protect ourselves but to protect others as well, it's exhausting. And I'm with you, even with the vaccinations I'm not going to feel comfortable being in public spaces for some time, especially since you know there will be people who act like they only need this one vaccine and that's it when this most likely will be like the flu where you need to get the vaccine every single year.
Look, I miss going out to events too, I miss going to places and traveling, but I'm not a selfish asshole who is pretending none of this is happening. It doesn't matter if you had a date set for an event, read the fucking room of the state of the world and adjust accordingly, perhaps adapt to the way the world is going to operate from now on even with the vaccinations in place. Don't be that asshole.

Date: 2021-03-31 08:32 pm (UTC)Conventions are like... a lot of transit. You're right that there are people at conventions who struggle to do things like shower regularly and use deodorant - and these are the people we now have to trust are washing their hands and properly wearing their masks? Not to mention that the first people who feel totally comfortable back at a convention strike me as people who likely have not been distancing etc. now so they may not be the safest crowd to be in the middle of. They kept delaying and rescheduling a convention here last year and I was certain that the people who said they'd go no matter what were not the people who I'd feel safest being near.
I definitely find the need to be aware of everyone exhausting. And it's a constant thing now. You can't just read and ignore people around you because if someone isn't wearing a mask you need to notice that and move if possible. There are a lot of people who just don't care, who don't believe in science, who are using this as an opportunity to be contrary, who genuinely don't understand, who are grifting others... just a lot of people out there who aren't following the rules and it's almost impossible to tell what's going on at a glance so it's a lot more having to avoid everyone.
I miss travel, I miss conventions, and theatre, and concerts, and my friends... but exactly, read the room. It's not that people don't want to go places it's that many of us are just trying not to be the reason someone else dies. I'm also concerned about myself. I'm super careful and caught Covid, who knows if I'll catch it again and if I do, maybe it's worse this time. Best to just stay away from events and such for a while longer. Vaccines are happening, we are going in a positive direction, why ruin it now?
