Learning about David Bowie's death was both shocking and depressing, mostly because I wasn't aware that he was sick. He had been battling cancer for a long while, so much that he knew that he didn't have time left and that is why he recently released a new album and made a music video which appears to be his final farewell. Which is eerily beautiful in a way, he got to say what he needed to say and he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Like most, I grew up on David Bowie. Not necessarily his music, but through other means. Labryinth was the film that introduced me to him at a young age, which I watched ad nausem (and just rewatched again at Christmas), which did give me a taste of his music, but it wouldn't have been until later where I found several of his songs and listened to them. He was often referenced in pop culture, his songs would appear on soundtracks to television or movies, he guest appeared on several other things, many music artists found him to be a musical influence, like, it was hard to not know who David Bowie was. His style, his talent, his presence, he held quite a legacy in music and pop culture. Having him not be around anymore is kind of hard to accept, especially since the news, for anyone who wasn't aware of his diagnosis, came so suddenly. It's hard to swallow that this legend of a man is gone. But his legacy will live on, in our hearts and throughout history, and therefore he will forever be immortal.

Rest in peace, David Bowie.

The radio kept talking about his songs and I was baffled that they never mentioned Labyrinth, which is, as far as I can see in geek culture (but maybe not in mainstream culture?), very famous.

Perhaps they were mostly focusing specifically on his music career rather than the films he was in, unless they were referencing other forms of media he appeared in, then that makes no sense.

Which is understandable. It makes sense when there is news like that it's a personal choice to not allow anyone but your closest friends and family be aware, and it seems like Bowie didn't want anyone else knowing so it wouldn't affect his work. He wanted to be known as the person that he was and his work rather than the sickness that was slowly killing him.

It really was such a sudden, shocking thing to find out. But then it makes sense when you consider on how he timed it, with the release of a new album and video. He wanted to leave this plane on a high note, and he did, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy.

It was eerily beautiful that he released a new album and a new music video before his passing, and it's very sobering to know that it was his swan song as well.

One of my favorite songs from him is "Within You" from Labyrinth, and I guess that was my first exposure to him as well.

Yeah, it's chilling but also beautiful because he did this intentionally. He wanted to go out with a bang, releasing a new album and music video as a way of saying goodbye to everyone. Which makes it more meaningful since, aside from those close to him, nobody was aware of his diagnosis. He wanted to go out the way he wanted to, and this was a beautiful swan song.

It seems like he made a choice to not let anyone but family know he was ill - so everyone was surprised - in some ways it's understandable in that it meant that people didn't make everything about him being ill? He went out how he wanted to.

Like you said, his legacy will live on in so many ways. He meant a lot to so many people, in so many different ways.

Yeah, those are my thoughts as well. And it's totally understandable, considering it's a personal decision on whether to publicly release that information. He didn't want people, aside from those close to him, to worry about his condition instead of focusing on his work. And his last album that he just released is a testament to that. He wanted to say what he wanted on his own terms and, in hindsight, it was beautifully done.

It's so bizarre that I had recently rewatched Labyrinth too over Christmas, and we had been talking about Bowie and his work. But now it's making me revisit some of his music that I hadn't listened to in a while.

My favourite game series references him a lot (to the point of having a version of man who sold the world play at certain times and a mercenary group being named after a Bowie-album- the creator's a fan lol) and now.. it's a little eerie to replay it.

If you listened to music at any point in your life, you would know David Bowie's name. I don't know a single person who didn't know who he is. I was never a per se but I was familiar with so many of his songs- so many songs I didn't even realize I remembered.

So many legends have passed in recent years. :|

Very well written. I'm a Labyrinth fan and that was the most Bowie I had in my life. He had listened to his music but I wasn't a hardcore fan. But it is still sad, he was a legend and I'm not sure if we are going to have artists like him again.
