We're gonna change the world tonight.
Oct. 17th, 2015 12:01 pm++ In case I missed anyone, thank you for all the birthday wishes! ♥
++ Community recommendations:
stitchers_tv and
killjoys_tv. I know that fandom communities are a dying breed these days, and anything for newer fandoms are virtually nonexistent on LJ. But at least some are being made, these two for Stitchers and Killjoys, both shows that have premiered this year and have been renewed for second seasons, so if you're a fan of either and would like to keep the fandom community discussion alive, definitely worth checking out. Speaking of, Stitchers is going to be having a Halloween special soon, and I can't wait to see what that is going to feature.
++ Defiance has been cancelled. I'm less surprised and more disappointed with this news, mostly because aside from figuring that there would last at least one more season, it was one of my shows that I liked watching so hearing about this was such a huge bummer, emotionally. At least from what I hear the third season finale was satisfactory enough to be counted as a series finale, so that's good. I guess I'm just disappointed because Defiance was one of those creative science fiction shows that had a shitload of world-building, from terraformed Earth to the characters and the different alien races, detailing not just their costumes and appearances but also all the languages and cultures, the interpersonal relationships between them and the humans, the conflicts and working together, and just everything in between, especially the music. It was a wonderful and beautiful show in that regard, and despite it living a healthy three season life and ending on a high note rather than getting mishandled by the writers and execs, it does feel like a loss somehow that we'll never see this world again.

Date: 2015-10-17 08:43 pm (UTC)I haven't watched Killjoys either, but it's on my list of things to binge-watch.
Stitchers is actually pretty good! The pilot may be touch and go for some (as some pilots are) and the concept may seem outlandish, but I quite liked it and it's what drew me to continue watching. Of course, I'm a fan of Allison Scagliotti, so that was my main reason for watching it in the first place, but the first season was very good, at least in my opinion. So please don't let a young ensemble cast discourage you from checking it out. It's only ten episodes so binge-watching could be an option to determine your thoughts on it overall.

Date: 2015-10-18 06:21 am (UTC)Thanks for the comm recs. Hopefully people do show interest in them at some point. I'd love to see more activity for both those fandoms, but as you pointed out, fandom comms are a dying breed, it seems.
Sad about Defiance too. (And Dominion.) I'm still 9 episodes behind. Guess that's all I have left of it now...

Date: 2015-10-18 09:29 am (UTC)You're very welcome. I hope that more people end up noticing and joining too, then again the fandom side of this place has become incredibly quiet over the years because many have migrated elsewhere. Mostly to Tumblr, and while Tumblr is great for graphics it's not that great for general discussion, as in threads and actual communication with individual people in a singular post about things. That is something I wish would return. Just the sense of fandom community as a whole, honestly.
So many great shows being cancelled. It's the story of my life, really. But at least Defiance had a good three season run, which is more than what other shows get, so I'm thankful for what we got rather than it being canned prematurely.

Date: 2015-10-18 12:45 pm (UTC)Yeah, I have noticed that with fandom. I generally disagree with the whole "LJ is dying" idea. Mine has never really slowed down. But fandom communities? That's definitely slowed. It used to be there was a new comm for every new show before it was even released. Now, you have to make your own comm half the time.
Know the feeling! The good ones always seem to get killed too soon.
Three seasons definitely isn't bad, considering. Still, a shame.

Date: 2015-10-19 12:59 am (UTC)Fandom hasn't disappeared or been forgotten, it's just become a smaller space than how it used to be. And because of that, despite the need for specific communities, I think many feel it's pointless to make any for newer fandoms that nobody will join or partake in, which is why most will discuss fandom on their own journals instead. Hence why friending memes has become the most important way of making newer friends with similar fandom interests these days.
Sorry, I'm babbling now. I just have a lot of feelings about this particular topic.

Date: 2015-10-19 04:41 am (UTC)Definitely not. It seems to have moved to personal journals rather than comms.
All good. Me too.

Date: 2015-10-18 09:34 pm (UTC)I do recommend checking them out when you can. I haven't seen Killjoys yet, myself, but I have all the episodes and I'm just saving a time to binge-watch it.
It really sucks whenever a show you love gets cancelled, no matter what the reason. :(

Date: 2015-10-19 01:03 am (UTC)I'm kind of surprised that a) they cancelled Defiance, and alternatively b) that it took them so long to cancel, mostly because in both respects it was such a huge investment on their portion to be the flagship show. Like, they poured a lot into it.

Date: 2015-10-19 01:09 am (UTC)And yeah, I was just thinking about when they were first promoting the show. They were making such a huge deal about it, not just with how expensive it was, but they even pushing the online game as well. It honestly was a big investment on their part, so perhaps it got too expensive to keep producing, or the ratings weren't up to par with their expectations as it hit their third season. I don't know. I honestly don't know anything anymore with Syfy.

Date: 2015-10-19 02:44 am (UTC)Though to be fair, Syfy has always made some really, really weird choices wrt its shows.

Date: 2015-10-19 06:31 am (UTC)Probably. I definitely think from the way it was marketed initially that they wanted it to be the Next Big Thing, something not unlike what BSG or SG1 once was for their channel, going back to their scifi/fantasy roots after their whole remodeling of their brand thing. And the fact that it was created by the same person who created Farscape was another thing to draw more people in. But yeah, I don't know what they were expecting otherwise.
Though to be fair, Syfy has always made some really, really weird choices wrt its shows.
Yeah, they really do. It's an unfortunate and frustrating thing, especially when they cancel some of their most popular programs. I'm still bitter about the outcomes of some of my other favorite shows.

Date: 2015-10-19 05:40 am (UTC)I miss active fandom communities. They were such great places for discussion!

Date: 2015-10-19 06:11 am (UTC)Yeah, I miss them too. It's kind of depressing seeing the ones that used to be incredibly active now completely void of anything anymore. Fandom communities were a great place for not just discussions, but finding some amazing people. Tumblr may be great in some aspects, but it's certainly not the same as having an actual post with multiple conversations that won't get lost in numerous reblogs.
