My show is back! With only six episodes before it's gone forever. :(
Which is something I want to address concerning the Myka storyline. From all the emotional build of the last season with her coming to terms with her mortality, of being afraid of telling Pete about her having cancer, and just with all the emotional stuff that happened in the finale, only to have her completely fine minutes in the premiere? Not even in a recovery stage from surgery she just had? It was very rushed and seemingly tossed out the window, and sort of ignoring all the emotional impact that happened last season. But, to be fair, I know that the writers had more planned since they believed they were to get another full season order, dealing with arcs and relationships and the like, until they were told they only had six episodes. Leading to them having to not do some of the things they wanted to do because of the lack of time. So, on one hand I understand this decision since they had no choice, but on the other hand it did feel like they kind of made jokes about the whole cancer storyline. I wanted more of an emotional aftermath. Pete being concerned for Myka, reactions from everyone else, I wanted even a reaction from Helena for goodness sakes.
From this premiere you could tell the difference in tone. The show has returned to its lighthearted nature it began with rather than the heaviness it's been for the last two seasons. Which is something I'm also kind of torn about because, while I'm happy about it because WH13 has always been my happy show, it's also kind of jarring when you go from the seriousness of the S4 finale into this S5 premiere with all its jokes and quips.
It's not that I didn't enjoy the premiere, I did! I guess it's a bit uneven considering the direction the show has been heading, which I was genuinely fascinated with. But, again, I understand that they needed to wrap things up nicely and give the fans a proper sendoff and ending it where it should end, i.e. not in an angsty place. Had the show got a full season order perhaps there would have been more time to handle certain storylines. But since they cannot, they've gone back to its roots, and speaking as a fan who has gone through the rough emotional rollarcoaster over the past couple seasons, I am utterly grateful and appreciative they have decided to take that route.
As for the episode itself, it was a very good way to start off the season.
Having Paracelsus travel back in time and alter the future, seeing him control the Warehouse line, changing the way it dealt with artifacts and science, was very cool to see, if kind of creepy. I'm just sad that his character was defeated too quickly. I'm also kind of bummed that we didn't see Claudia kick his ass like it was predicted that she would, you know? I wanted more of her connected to the Warehouse, beating him up, and after he got defeated she would become the new caretaker. I'm hoping that somehow that is dealt with in these last episodes. I really want to see Claudia take on the responsibility of the Warehouse, that is what I kind of want in the series finale actually.
Now we're also setting up for her confronting the truth about her sister. A sister that we didn't know anything about until the fourth season finale. With five more episodes to go, I'm hoping they can explain it all within that time so it makes sense. Also, I want to see Joshua again, because if this is going to be dealing with the Donovan family, I want all of them present.
Oh, and Mark Sheppard returns as Valda! Well, creepy!alternate!future!Valda, but still. I'm wondering his deal, whether he has a mission given by Paracelsus of he is acting entirely on his own, and what he's up to.
Overall, between the confusion of the transition of the mood and tone and certain things not being dealt with in the way I had wished they would have been, I'm still happy that the show has returned. I fully enjoyed the episode, and I will be enjoying the remaining episodes of the season and the series as a whole. It's going to be bittersweet, and I'm just going to sit back and enjoy what I can until it's no more.
One down, five more episodes to go. I am not ready for this show to go away forever. Damn you, Syfy/Comcast!
