Quick musing of shows.
May. 8th, 2013 12:26 amGame of Thrones: I didn't watch the last episode, though I got the gist of what happened. I'm just waiting for the next episode because THE BEAR PIT and DANY. ♥
Hannibal: Everyone should be watching this show. I'm not just saying this because it's dangerously on the verge of not getting renewed (which I really hope it does), but also because it's a very, very good show, and very gorgeous too. Grotesquely gorgeous, in fact. Even if this isn't your preferred genre, it's still rather fascinating to watch. Someone said that it's very dreamlike, and indeed it is. Also, the best part about it is that you already know who Hannibal is and what he does. Everyone else around him is completely oblivious so it's just a matter of inside jokes with himself and the audience (ex. "It's always nice to have friends over for dinner.")
Defiance: Continues to be amazing. Also another show people should be watching if you aren't already. I pretty much love everything about the Tarr family, Stahma in particular because she is just so cunning and manipulative in a very calm, polite way. If she were to play the game of thrones, she would win hands down.
Elementary: Continues to be happy-making. JOAN AND SHERLOCK = FOREVER CHILDREN AND ADORABLE BFFS. ♥_♥ And we get Irene Alder this week! :D
Doctor Who: I haven't watched anything passed the Christmas episode, to be honest. It just hasn't really enthused me as it used to. I'm thinking once Clara's identity is revealed that will determine whether I will continue watching or not.

Date: 2013-05-08 07:50 am (UTC)I've heard that they may not reveal all of Clara's stuff by the end of season 7.
I haven't watched this week's GOT either. I've read spoilers enough to know that I will probably be annoyed.
Hannibal and Defiant are at the top of my list of things to watch once my exams are through. I just haven't had the time to start anything new.

Date: 2013-05-08 08:06 am (UTC)Well of course not, otherwise they won't have much material for the next season. But they've been dangling all this stuff about her reveal and her true nature in endless interviews that I feel like all this hype has to lead somewhere. I just want to know if what they plan to do is worth the hype they've been putting out there.

Yeah. Unfortunately, that is the case which is why I kind of avoided seeing it myself, as I was warned by many people about the content featured in it. This season has been great so far, but this last episode was probably the weakest point. :/

Lines like this are seriously one of my favorite things about this show. As dark as the whole thing is,there's also some humor :)
Defiance is pretty good so far and yeah, the Starrs are great. For some reason I'm finding myself liking Datak more and more, despite him being the ~villain

I just love their whole dynamic and that they have ulterior motives and an agenda for what they're doing, with Stahma being serenely manipulative and Datak being a bit more hotheaded in certain situations, and yet I'm kind of rooting for them? I just love everything about how well-crafted their characters are and what they want and how they deal with things in order to achieve the same goal. All these characters are unique and different with their own personalities and reasons for doing things, cultural or otherwise. I think it's why I'm attracted to this show as much as I am. It reminds me why I love deeply complex and complicated characters and their relationships with each other and how it reflects on the situations they're in.

Date: 2013-05-08 06:54 pm (UTC)I did see clips from it that were relevant (Sansa's world being shattered once again, the poor thing; Olenna versus Tywin, the little moments between Jaime and Brienne, etc.) But otherwise, yeah.

When you compare this season to the previous ones, it's quite obvious they've been boosted in the quality department, cinematography-wise.

Date: 2013-05-09 12:33 am (UTC)I was really falling out of love with Doctor Who during the first half of season seven but now I've loved every episode since Clara came. I hope Moffat doesn't ruin her with whoever she really is. Sometimes the mystery is better than knowing.

Date: 2013-05-09 03:29 am (UTC)I started out being optimistic for S7, at least as much as I could get because it being the end of the Ponds and I was dreading that but clinging to their last episodes the best I could. When their time ended, sad as I was I was still remaining hopeful for the new companion. While I find Clara adorable, I just can't seem to get into the second half of the season for some reason. Idk. It's weird.

Date: 2013-05-09 01:15 am (UTC)HANNIBAL. OMG YES. I can't shut up about this show. I've written more about it than I have anything else lately. It's just good on so many levels. The main draw for me is that Hannibal is allowed to be the worst. I'm just sick of redemption stories, and you know you won't be getting that here because the end is already written. His 'softer side' is drugs and brainwashing, and that's when he LIKES you. A compelling bad guy who's is actually bad, yet deep and complex, without being a stock psycho, or an 'endearing' type of evil (snarky, etc), or the bad guy you love to hate. It's very interesting and I suspect very hard to pull off.

Date: 2013-05-09 02:24 am (UTC)It's sort of my annoyance too, if it's true. Because they've been making such a big deal about her reveal and about when it finally happens for months now, and if they don't actually deliver on that front it's gonna be a huge letdown.

Agreed so hard.
Like, I do like redemption arcs but I think I prefer them to characters who are mostly morally ambiguous and live in that gray area. Characters who are straight up villains, who operate by a twisted code and who are genuinely irredeemable but also have a complexity in their own right are much more compelling than having some kind of redemption arc for them. We all know the outcome of Hannibal, so seeing this is much more fascinating to watch. I can imagine it being tough to pull off convincingly without going into those common tropes of villains, which is why I think this is something special to NOT CANCEL because it gives us something different in this sense.

Date: 2013-05-09 02:35 am (UTC)But I suppose from a narrative perspective, it's interesting. If you're a bad guy, you basically have two options. Turn good and live, or eventually be killed off. Hannibal gets neither of those. Even Dexter, which is the closest "RL" analogy show (not supernatural), has Dexter questioning his nature and wondering if he could have been normal, trying to stop killing at points, etc. And that totally works for Dexter. But it's just so amazing to have a show where the bad guy is a main character who's doing none of those things, a killer who is never going to have an existential crisis to try to make up for all the people that he killed. Who we KNOW is going to get caught, yet there is still tension. That's the amazing thing.
