OUAT: "Broken" Season Premiere Review

The curse is broken, magic has returned, but not everything is what it appears to be.
Continuing where the season one finale left off, due to Emma breaking the curse everyone in Storybrooke has regained their memories of their fairytale selves. But Rumpelstiltskin has unleashed something, bringing magic into the real world. One of the purposes is to deal with Regina once and for all, but there's other motives behind his action, ones we're unclear about and has got everyone worried about what this could mean. Especially since magic works differently in Storybrooke. Back in fairytale land, we're introduced to Prince Phillip and Mulan who have saved Princess Aurora from her deep sleep, but their story has just begun since it's been revealed their story is coinciding in real time with the rest of what has been happening; that for whatever reason their part of land had been untouched by the curse, but still affected since they had been frozen until the curse in Storybrooke had been broken. This becomes more relevant when Emma and Snow inadvertently wind up to where Mulan and Aurora are, creating something interesting in the dividing line between the different worlds and what this all means for the rest of the season.
This premiere really made me appreciate what this show is offering, and it gives me great hope for what they bring this season.
First, the Charming family reunion. Just. ♥
I loved it for various reasons. Seeing Snow and Charming's reactions to seeing Emma -- not just Emma Swan, but Emma their daughter -- was such a touching moment. Snow reaching out to her and hugging her, and Charming. Oh, Charming's reaction was heartbreaking and heartwarming. His expression was like he couldn't believe that his daughter was right before him, and he approached her and practically cradled her head, like the last thing he remembered when he was himself was cradling her in his arms, protecting her. It's such a wonderful moment seeing him realize that this was his baby girl, all grown up, who saved them just as they knew and believed she would. And then there's Henry, and when he said "Grandpa?" to Charming and then Snow's laugh, oh my god I practically was smiling so wide. It's such a beautiful moment.
But of course, another thing I loved about the reunion was Emma's reaction. Her hesitation is very realistic to someone in her situation.
It was only a short while ago that she started believing in magic, she spent her entire life alone, wondering who her parents were and why they abandoned her. She is overwhelmed by everything, and her instinct is to shut herself down, of focusing on one particular priority. The scene with her parents was nicely done because it shows just how complicated things are. As much as Emma wants to fully accept things and be happy that she has her parents, her insecurities, her abandonment issues, everything she's gone through in her life can't just magically disappear. It doesn't work like that. I think even Snow knows that and that's why she wants to talk about things, about everything, because she wants to make things work. She wants to be there for her daughter, to make up for lost time, and I'm sure Emma wants her mother to be there as well. It's just gonna take some time.
Which makes me really excited to having them appear in the deserted magical land with Mulan and Aurora. Not only is this a fantastic direction to take in exploring the different realms and which ones were unaffected and which doors can be opened, but it gives both Emma and Snow a chance on catching up, of talking things out and being badass together.
Speaking of which, the very notion that Snow White, Emma, Mulan and Aurora teaming up and fighting together? THIS SHIT IS AMAZING BALLS, YOU GUYS. FIERCE AND FLAWLESS WOMEN KICKING ASS AND TAKING NAMES TOGETHER, HOW AWESOME IS THIS SHIT? :D
Other things I loved about this premiere:
++ Rumpelstiltskin and Belle. I know there's a lot of debate regarding her returning shortly after understanding that he hasn't really changed, and I know that there are certain people who hate the very thought of Belle being with someone like him. However, I think it was sweet for the most part. Obviously he does care about Belle but he also doesn't pretend to not be a monster either, he lied to protect her in a sense of what he's doing but he didn't mask it once she found out. Belle came back on her own free will, and she stayed despite everything because it is her choice. She believes she can at least make sure he doesn't do something he'll regret. I don't know how long that will last, or what will happen to them. But it's a start, and I am intrigued with what the show is planning for them.
++ The mysterious stranger at the beginning of the premiere, I suspect are either two of the following: Henry's father or Rumpelstiltskin's son. He got a postcard with the word "BROKEN" written on the back, meaning that he was notified when the curse was broken, which means this is someone who knows about the curse and is going to return.
++ Charming and Henry, grandfather and grandson. I can't wait for more of them together. ♥
++ I am intrigued with Regina and how she's gonna manage Storybrooke now. Of course, with Emma having accidentally giving Regina back her powers (at least however much we don't really know for sure) and how magic is different in Storybrooke, it makes you wonder how much power Regina is gonna have over everyone. She's an interesting villain with her own issues, which these issues I want the show to fully explore.
++ I want Aurora/Mulan romance. What? I'm just saying, after certain parallels made from the premiere, it can possibly happen. If the show is bold enough to go that route.
Overall: Brilliant start to what I'm hoping is to be a fantastic season. I'm having lots of high hopes because of where things are going, the direction of exploring the different worlds and realms, more new characters Emma and Snow are going to be meeting, what's gonna happen in Storybrooke and for the Charmings to reunite together once again. I can't wait.
