Apr. 26th, 2011 07:05 pmIt seems like Supernatural was renewed for a seventh season.
Meh, not unsurprising, however I'm not that excited or enthusiastic to be honest.
This season has been incredibly underwhelming and enraging for the most part, for reasons I've already expressed ad nausem. Show really needs to get their shit back together in order to impress me if they want a successful seventh season. I'd take Sera Gamble stepping down or being fired from showrunner position to be the first indicator of the show going in the right direction, please. I'd also take Kripke back in a heartbeat if that means no more shittiness that she's done, or Edlund if he's willing for the job. And better writers, as well. Just, a whole goddamn makeover would be nice. No more trainwrecks like it has been this entire season.

In other fandom news:
Yesterday Joss Whedon started filming The Avengers.
Plus, the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog sequel is becoming a reality! Having it be three years since the first one came out, immediately becoming a hit sensation, they've become constructing songs for the second one. Of course this probably won't get started until after The Avengers gets finished, but still. More Dr. Horrible and more Joss Whedony goodness makes me happy, so yay!
The Guild is also shooting its fifth season.
Haven S2 teaser trailer! Very brief, but goddamn that freaky-looking clown....O_o
And finally, DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2 TRAILER PREMIERES TOMOROW!!!! \O/\O/\O/ MY FANGIRL HEART WILL SWELL WITH HAPPINESS AND MY EYES FILLED WITH EPIC TEARS.

Date: 2011-04-27 02:17 am (UTC)Ditto. I'm rather neutral on the idea. S6 hasn't been thrilling to me at all, and in some respects has been downright disappointing. I don't have expectations at this point that S7 will be a turnaround. Geez, there's enough material in S6 to MAKE two seasons, if they had done it right. But no, we get a ton of plots all smashed together this season, many not developed, or competing with others for attention.

Because they kinda really need to fix everything that S6 tanked - the plot, the characterizations... everything we've been ranting about. And hopefully they've figured out that they were killing the show, and they're going to spend the next season making everything alright...
-is hopeful-

Date: 2011-04-27 02:47 am (UTC)But yeah, I agree. I don't want the show to go downhill, I want there to be something of a payoff. However they've failed to impress me this season and nothing has convinced me they have any idea where they're going and what they're going to do. I hope that they figure it out and I sincerely hope that this will be the absolute last season. I cannot foresee it going beyond a seventh season, otherwise it'll turn into the thing that Kripke didn't want for the show.
Then again it already became that once they got a sixth season, so....

Date: 2011-04-27 02:59 am (UTC)I just hope the show doesn't pull a Smallville, going on for ten seasons. I was talking with my sister about this just now and she says yeah, that would be bad because SPN doesn't have enough characters to go on that long (hell, it doesn't have that much of an ensemble to have lasted this long, ffs)
no subject
Date: 2011-04-27 03:11 am (UTC)Ahaha, SPN is going to be that show that goes on and on and on, like that Celine Dion song. I don't want it to go down the hill like Heroes did.

Date: 2011-04-27 03:21 am (UTC)I know fans want it to continue on and on forever, but that's simply impossible.

Date: 2011-04-27 03:18 am (UTC)The thing is, it does seem rather selfish to want the show to end at a specific point because, this job is their livelihood and it would be sad seeing them sad that they can't go to work every single day and have fun like they do. As a fan you want things to be a certain way, but in the business of being an actor, when you have something good going for you, a job that you love working on, that's something you have to treasure and these actors have been doing this for six/seven years now. I mean, I feel slightly bad for wanting a show that they desperately love working on to be over just because I don't like the direction it's going in. At the same time though, certain things have to come to an end and if it's not doing well writing/direction-wise, it either has to be fixed or just end before it gets worse. I don't know.
Gah, rambling now.

Date: 2011-04-27 03:08 am (UTC)I just can't summon up much feeling either way about this season. I've become pretty indifferent about most things involving the show. I wish they would just decide that the 7th season will be their last, embrace it and really try to make something out of it. Try to go out on a real high note with some consistent plotting and well developed story. It's hard to see that happening though.

Date: 2011-04-27 04:34 am (UTC)I'm curious... What are your thoughts of the writers, etc. bringing back Castiel? Do you see a way for the character to become an integral part of the show again?

Date: 2011-04-27 07:14 am (UTC)If things are ambiguous at the end of this season, I think perhaps having him in the seventh season would be about proving himself and deciding where he truly belongs, especially if Heaven's civil war continues. If things are resolved, which I doubt, then something new would have to happen, although it would depend on how his relationship with the Winchesters would be. Particularly with Dean, because they do have a special connection and bond that hasn't been seen for most of this season, and I would like them to rekindle it.
Of course, my worry with the writers is underusing his character like they have for most of this season. While they might have done so to prolong the mystery of his storyline, I don't like them butchering his characterization only for shits and giggles.

Date: 2011-04-28 03:38 am (UTC)I'm with you 100% on that one. It's a shame that the writers aren't.
[I think] the character itself has so many layers and facets that could be addressed and would make for really interesting story lines but for whatever reason, the writers don't seem eager to bring that into play. Instead, they bring him in for a bit of comic relief and/or cosmic placeholder. Here's hoping that the season renewal will light a fire under their collective asses.

Date: 2011-04-28 11:17 am (UTC)I've always said that Cas' character depth and the whole ensemble of the heavenly host can practically run an entire show/mini-series on their own. This whole season has me more interested on what's happening on the side (which we never see, because the world revolves around the Winchesters and their problems) rather than what're being shoved in our faces.
I wanted to see the war. I wanted to see the other angels. How was heaven split up? How did Cas manage to actually gain a following and an army when for the past 2 seasons, all of heaven shunned him out. :/ Heaven could really survive a short spin-off, which unfortunately will never happen.

Date: 2011-04-29 02:24 am (UTC)So much of the season has never been addressed, in terms of the war. We've gotten snippets of info here and there but the writers have yet to delve into detail. The character of Rachel was brought in rather abruptly and then she was killed off. We have Balthazar, yes, but is he the *only* other angel assisting Cas?
I keep thinking that the writers have barely scratched the surface of Cas' struggle(s) between maintaining his link with humanity, specifically the Winchesters, and his inherent nature of obedience and allegiance to the cause. The character is so rich and so complicated yet none of this is being brought out into the open. Instead, he is kept in shadows and secrecy. It's very disappointing.

Date: 2011-04-27 01:49 pm (UTC)You and me both, but then I've skipped more episodes than I've watched this season- from what I've heard I haven't really missed that much. I've heard a rumor that Misha might be written off the show (with Cas' popularity I'll believe it when I see it) and I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand I would hate to see Cas go (he's pretty much the only reason I watch) but on the other it seems like the writers didn't know what to do with him after season four.

Date: 2011-04-27 09:15 pm (UTC)It's gotten to the point where I only watch the show because of Castiel and the other angels, not the Winchesters anymore. So if Castiel left, so would I, and I have no shame in admitting that (unless they do something interesting with the brothers but I somehow doubt it.) On one hand if that means they will no longer butcher his character in the writing then that's kind of a blessing is disguise, however on the other hand I doubt they'd get rid of their most popular character/actor amongst the fandom. Especially after making him a series regular (even though they have been treating Castiel like a recurring role for the last two seasons now, but I digress.)
I think that's what that rumor is, just a rumor. I think they want to amp up the anticipation for the finale which is a cliffhanger for fans to see what happens to our beloved angel. Keeping the suspense and all of that, you know.

Date: 2011-04-28 02:30 pm (UTC)Me too. Someone pointed that they might make him the new Big Bad is season seven, so they can keep him around, which scares me to no end because I would put it past the writers to do that.

no subject
Date: 2011-04-27 08:59 pm (UTC)Actually, while it's been bad, it's not the worst they could have gone and believe me, after seeing the pathway certain shows have gone in the past (ex. Heroes) they have yet to get to the point where it's practically irredeemably horrible. I'm hoping it never gets to that point, ever.
And while I'm not jumping with excitement I'm holding onto a sliver of hope that somehow a seventh season will fix the damages that Sera Gamble has done this season. I think of it like the pattern of BTVS, for example. The sixth season was considered awful by most of fandom, however the seventh and last season brought everything together and it more or less was much better and gave a solid ending and conclusion to the story. My only hope is that SPN does that same, that the seventh season will be its last and that they have something big planned in going out in style.

Date: 2011-04-28 11:23 am (UTC)There was so much potential on the idea of heaven at war, and of Castiel being forced to do things he'd regret for the sake of a higher purpose/goal. But, this whole storyline could go wrong in so many ways and with the way Gamble's been at it, I'm more inclined to believe she'd destroy the Character before the season's done.
I'm banking so much hope on the episode that Edlund wrote and directed to give us the saving grace that would salvage at least the relationship between Cas and the Winchesters.

Date: 2011-04-28 11:28 am (UTC)She probably doesn't care and won't listen regardless. From what I've gathered from her interviews and such, Gamble just lives inside her own little world in what she illusions the show to be, not what it's supposed to be and doesn't listen to fan reactions or opinions. If she did, she wouldn't have pulled the majority of the stunts she did this season.

Same here. Like you said, I distrust Gamble and the other writers to do his character justice at all with the bullshit they've been pulling lately. :/
