Day 15 - A scene that makes you angry

Considering that this show has been more frustrating than exciting lately, there are many scenes that have made me incredibly angry. Many of you probably already know the kinds of things I rant about regarding what the show has done, so I'm not going to repeat myself on the shitload of scenes that have angered me over the last season and a half so far. It's been done to death and quite frankly, it's exhausting just ranting about this show anymore. :(

There is one scene that really bothered me and that could have saved us the trouble had it never occurred at all: Dean visiting Lisa at the end of "99 Problems."

Had that not happened, we wouldn't have gotten this idiotic domesticated storyline that serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever and we wouldn't have gotten this out-of-character Dean Winchester for half of the sixth season. Moreover, the show wouldn't have taken a perfectly self-sufficient and independent woman who was perfectly happy being a single mother and took care of her child first before anything else, and turned her into a Bella Swan-wannabe in desperate to have a man in her life and disregarding the safety of her kid, thus destroying her characterization in the process. That was the most disappointing factor of the entire thing, honestly. Destroying both her and Dean's characterization for this pointless domestic life setup. Dean hadn't thought or mentioned Lisa in years and suddenly wants to play house? Lisa is willing to drop everything in her life for some stranger guy who leads a dangerous life, who is psychologically and emotionally damaged, to be around her son?

That's utter bullshit. I honestly feel insulted on behalf of the characters.

Dean is bigger than that, and Lisa is smarter than that. They should have just left Lisa and Ben alone and done something completely different for Dean to want to have a normal life besides hunting. It would have been more realistic, and in-character, had Dean just went off by himself to try to live off the grid inside a normal life by himself without any kind of relationship attachment. That would have been character growth and development after everything he'd gone through. Or, if they had to drag Lisa back into the mix for whatever reason, they honestly could have just done it where Lisa was being a friend to Dean and helping him out rather than getting involved with him. But hey, that would require actually thinking of a storyline to go ahead with and making sense in terms of the story and the characters, which obviously is too complicated for the new showrunner or the writers to comprehend I guess.

So yeah, that entire scene at the end of that episode is to blame for all of this. Had that not happened, things probably would have been much different this season, maybe even for the better.

....Wow. Okay, I totally didn't mean for this to go that long. But you see what I mean when I rant, and this is just one particular scene. Imagine everything else I could have ranted about, it would have been a freaking essay, lol.

Heh, well, this season is basically all about Stupid and Enraging Bullshit Things so, you know. My blatant opinionated thoughts are somewhat shared by many. At least I know I'm in good company, lol.

I've only seen part of Season 3, due to extreme laziness, so when that happened I literally had no idea who the fuck she was. If I can watch almost four complete seasons of a show without ever seeing her or hearing her name, how important to Dean could she possibly be? :/

Date: 2011-02-03 12:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
Yeah. And the thing is, they hardly even bothered making us care about her or anything about them being together even when they decidedly wanted to pull this shit. It's like really? Just bringing her back for the character conflict, using the women character as a plot device yet again I see. :/

Well that's not entirely true. Dean had thought of Lisa, at least subconsciously, which in "Dream a Little Dream of Me" we see. He did want that domesticated life.

Do I think the writers trashed Lisa? Yes. Completely. If she had stayed the way she was, I would have loved for her and Dean to become an item at some point.

That is true, but our dreams reflect on our wants and things that are on our minds and what he wanted and have desired, probably for a long time, was a normal kind of life, something calmer, and not the hunting life. Which is what everyone does subconsciousness. But not her specifically, but more of the idea of that kind of life. But wishing for something is different than achieving it, and I felt the show was pushing the entire thing especially with the year jump. :/

Oddly, I might have too, but only had they kept her characterization the way it was and shown some light in between everything about Dean and her being together that was actually believable. Now I just don't care and don't want them together because it's obviously unhealthy and no good for either of them.

I loved how in one of Gamble's latest interviews she compared Dean's year with Lisa to Sam's Souless! year. Like Dean living that life wasn't truly who Dean is and all that jazz that you and I have been shouting from the rooftops since the end of S5. But if that is what we have been supposed to be seeing the show portray? Not so much. They did a half-ass job of it if that is what we are supposed to interpret from the whole Domestic!Dean angsting over his insta!family and how it has played out so far.

*shakes head* Oh Sera Gamble, everyone sees through your fail and obvious backpedaling.

Seriously though, why couldn't they play it off like that originally instead of making it seem like that was what he ~truly wanted~ when it was clear from the start he didn't. It was confusing, out of character as hell, and to just have a half-assed explanation now? Too little, too late. Damage already done.

I WANT THIS SO BAD. Dean on his own, just like when Sam was at Stanford, only, you know, more broken. Trying to life HIS life, not a cookie cutter one that was waiting for him.

What I do NOT understand are the people that see going to Lisa IC for Dean. Yes, he's tired, yes, he dreams of a home, but that is NOT HOW YOU GET ONE. And even if Dean DID turn up at a random girl's doorstep, in the real world, he would not be invited to live there!! I could almost, ALMOST make sense of the scene in 5.17 as a fucked up Dean thing to do, but what I could never make sense of was what it led to.

Exactly. Plus, it would have fit perfectly with the reversal of roles because even though Sam had Jessica, he had went out to make a life for himself after leaving the hunting life all those years ago. If anything we could have seen that with Dean but, like you said, a bit more broken down than looking for independence.

I'm always wondering what show those people are watching when they make defenses like that. Because while Dean is certainly messed up and not in the right headspace, our Dean Winchester also knows better than to dump all of his fucked up problems onto these strangers who he doesn't know and has absolutely no personal ties with whatsoever, just because he wanted to escape that life. Unless they wanted Dean to intentionally be that stupid and reckless with such a decision, however Lisa would never invite someone that fucked up inside her own house. Never. For any woman or single mother out there, that is just insulting. And I'm insulted and offended on Dean's behalf that they did that to his character direction, which was going so well until that happened.

plus it was super obvious they decided to just add that/her in last minute.

It really was. Hell, the majority of what happened in the last half of the fifth season seemed incredibly rushed and last-minute decisions. Which is where the show started going downhill for me, they had no clear direction and I'm still not entirely sure why that is.

I mean, Lisa was fine in the first 99% of 3x02, but I reallly can't help but think that the whole "Dean dreaming of Lisa" thing was more Sera Gamble wanting them to be ~true love~ or something rather than something more logical like "Dean wants a family".

You know, I absolutely agree with you on this point. Sera Gamble likes trying to pull the "oh it was ~love~" bullshit card out from her ass just to add that romantic conflict, but it rarely works. She hasn't learned her lesson and the fact that she was placed as showrunner worried me from the beginning because I knew she was gonna pull some asshole stunt like this. And it happened, unfortunately. THAT SHIT DON'T WORK ON A SHOW LIKE SUPERNATURAL GAMBLE. LEAVE YOUR STEPHANIE MEYER-WANNABE NOTIONS OUT FROM THE STORY AND JUST GTFO ALREADY, JFC.

I agree the whole plot did a disservice to both characters. I think in a lot of ways it was just replaying the 'Dean can't be by himself because he can't cope' idea.

Which is absolutely ridiculous. I know that with the Winchesters old habits die hard, but couldn't they have at least tried to have Dean's character develop and evolve the way he was heading towards? I just don't understand, and it pisses me off. -__-

I still can't exactly agree that it would have been a good idea for Dean to go live alone somewhere. But anyhow, I've been through this thing so much I won't delve further into the ~rights or wrongs~ of this situation, since I think you already know my stance in this.

Dean needed someone, a person who doesn't constantly remind him of his brother (it could have been anyone) and all the things he lost, not to mention he was fulfilling a promise. Stupid promise -his brother's death wish- obviously but so it goes.

I'm keeping my thumbs up for a good second half of this season, not to mention writing off both Lisa and Ben without killing them.

I'm sure Dean needed some kind of stability, something that would take his mind off of everything that happened, but they could have done it differently. Dean wasn't in the right headspace to head in that direction of someone like Lisa, who he hadn't seen or mentioned or thought of in years, and he certainly shouldn't have dropped all his emotional baggage on her front doorstep (much less her accepting him after all this time, making us believe she was waiting all that time because well, it's not like she has a life or anything like that at all!) Dean needed to get away, but he could have done it himself on his own self-discovery than going to someone else. I'm sure that shows his own abandonment problems, but I thought they were progressing with these characters instead of making them go back to their self-destructive states.

Of course you already know my stance in all of this, as this post demonstrated. I know you have no problems with Dean and Lisa together, however I have huge issues with it. Especially with how it was handled this season and how it got started in the first place because it was just a random stupid thing to add into the mix. But I'm done ranting about it.

Though I will agree, I hope that in that upcoming episode that features Lisa and Ben will be the last time WITHOUT killing them. Granted they destroyed Lisa's character entirely, but it's the least they could do without making me rage anymore than I already am.

I know that and I agree in a way. I do have problems with it, but they're mostly minor enough for me to not give a big deal about it. Especially because this season hasn't exactly been good for the characterization of any of the characters except like, sidecharacters or so.

I'm keeping my thumbs up.

Great post. While I give Sera credit for putting and end to the storyline in a way that didn't kill off Lisa, it really never should have happened in the first place. It not only did it make Dean and Lisa OOC but it really seemed only to serve as a plot device to give Dean yet MORE to angst about.

From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
And in the long-run, what purpose did it serve other than proving more man!angst for Dean which, honestly, made no sense even in that kind of context? It added nothing but characterization fail and complete and utter lack of acknowledgment of continuity and character development.

So true. I always got the feeling that Sera doesn't really 'get' Dean as a character and just wanted the melodrama.

And this is why she shouldn't have been made showrunner in the first place. Putting someone in charge who favors one character and discarding everyone else is a horrible move, and it's guaranteed to be a disaster. Which with this season, it's a freaking trainwreck.
