"Bow-hunting is an important skill!"
Jan. 8th, 2011 06:26 amDean Winchester says this line during the first season, though we've never seen them bow-hunting. Or any kind of uses of such weaponry besides the guns and knives they have.
I honestly think it would be pretty cool to see them wielding over weapons and arsenal besides the same old guns and tricks. If this season is all about getting "back to the basics" as they claim, I would like more extension to the hunting business; preferably with different techniques different hunters use. This makes me think about my ideas for an international look at this business, since different cultures use different kinds of weapons and how to use them; imagine Japanese hunters as opposed to Western hunters we normally see handling particular situations and their own tactics and methods, and seeing how effective they are. I think it would be pretty nifty. Then again I tend to look beyond what the show has given us, which makes me hungry for something more than what we're limited to (or what the writers fail to acknowledge or bring up ever again, as they often do, but I digress). There's definitely unique and different kinds of creatures and monsters elsewhere, as evidenced from this current season during "Weekend at Bobby's", so it would be nice to get a glimpse into other cultures and how they handle their own monsters.
These are just some thoughts I've been having. I often look at the bigger picture of the universe they are in, which is something I wish the show would take more seriously. *shrugs*

Date: 2011-01-08 02:35 pm (UTC)BTVS had a variety of weaponry used on the show and for many different occasions.

Date: 2011-01-08 02:48 pm (UTC)It would be cool to see them go more old skool on something -- though I have to admit the sniper rifle in All Dogs Go To Heaven (and I guess we saw it in Simon Said though Dean didn't actually shoot it in that one) was really kinda hot.
And I'd love to see Sam actually using the wicked curved blade we saw him put in his bag in the pilot and then never saw again.

It was used for promotional pictures as well. I don't know why they abandoned that blade because it would have been wicked cool to see Sam using it, or other kinds of weapons of that nature.

All of Sam's stuff was destroyed in the fire - he didn't stop to pick up his bag as Dean was dragging him out of the apartment.

Date: 2011-01-08 02:58 pm (UTC)Seriously, everytime we see a hunter who is not amongst the Winchester-circle, they are assholes who all use guns. Sure, guns are the most useful but one would think they'd use something else too occasionally.
As a sort of a fan of Japanese culture, I'd be really interested in a peek of Asian hunters *__* but I don't know how that could be handled since this is centered in America. (Or Scotland. On occasion.)

That's what saddens me with the portrayal of other hunters they come across. Not just them being all mostly assholes, but they all use the same kind of tactics. There really is no Hunters Guide Book when getting into the business or how to do it, it's mainly a trial by error kind of deal and some hunters may find other methods more effective than others. Or create their own weapon. It seems rather lazy to just say "all hunters use guns."

Knowing this show, probably not handled or dealt with in a respectful manner that we would hope for, unfortunately. Though I've always had the idea that there could be a spin-off based around international hunters from all over, seeing how they hunt and their own internal affairs or something. Also, considering how American-centric Supernatural is, I find it hard to believe that everything centering around the Apocalypse wasn't affecting other hunters elsewhere too. I want to see how those hunters reacted to knowing about all this, or what's happening now, or if they are aware at all.

Date: 2011-01-09 12:09 am (UTC)That is true regarding Buffy and the guns thing, a better and more effective manner of fighting without the firepower. I also think it's because of the training Slayers often did by using Medieval weaponry based off the demons and vampires she would be facing. Bullets are ineffective in that case anyway.

Date: 2011-01-11 03:58 pm (UTC)True, I've always said the show might be about Sam and Dean, but it doesn't have to be JUST about Sam and Dean.
It astounds me that they haven't done one since the fourth season, seeing as that Castiel is a series regular and that they could have used some episodes to really explore his journey more.
It is, I get that they made him a regular in season five mostly because the fans liked him and than they didn't know what to do with him, but still....

Date: 2011-01-12 04:22 pm (UTC)Agreed. In this season in particular Sera seems to be taking the easy/sloppy/lazy way out with a lot of things; we're told that Dean spent a year with Lisa (and then it was the best year of her life) but instead of showing us that they used a time skip.

including giving us some ANGEL AND HEAVEN ACTION!no subject
Date: 2011-01-09 03:59 pm (UTC)Count me in. When I first heard about the anime I really hoped it would last long enough for the angels (at least Cas) to show up so we could see angel wings in anime form; they could make them look awesome because they wouldn't have to worry about a special effects budget.

Date: 2011-01-11 05:09 pm (UTC)I would like to see that too. Anything involving the angels (I hope they don't mess with Cas' character design too much) and the apocalypse is fine by me.
