After thinking about it, I don't think it was going against his character at this point especially this season in general. In the beginning of the series it would've been, but as his character grew and at this pivotal stage of his character growth they took another step further, which I believe was necessary. It's a development where he has to go to that dark and depressing place.
I agree with you, about Elle and Claire. How different but so similar they are with their daddy issues. Could you imagine if the roles were reversed?
