End of the Year Fandom Meme for 2024.
Dec. 30th, 2024 05:40 pmWhich TV shows did you start watching in 2024?
Meet You At The Blossom, 23.5 Degrees, Slow Horses, The Acolyte, Pit Babe, Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, Snowfall, Love Is A Poison, Dimension 20 (Never Stop Blowing Up, Time Quangle, and the second season of Misfits and Magic)
Which TV shows did you let go of in 2024?
Sad to say, but I've put Critical Role's third campaign on hold. I liked some individual aspects of it, but as a whole it just hasn't been the strongest and I just ended up becoming more distant and losing interest and not really bothering to keep up, which isn't good. It is at its final act and most likely will be concluding the campaign in January or February, so they will be taking a small break in between before starting a new campaign, so I'll have to see what happens then.
Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2024? Why?
Fangs of Fortune and 4 Minutes, mainly just because I haven't had the time and mental or emotional capacity to get into them. Knowing what I know of them, they are quite emotionally devastating so I'll need to properly prepare myself before watching them. I've been curious about Fallout, since I'm vaguely familiar with the games and since the show is more of an adaptation of the world of the games themselves, and people are falling very hard for the Ghoul and the Ghoul/Lucy pairing, I'm intrigued.
I also didn't get the chance to watch Orphan Black: Echoes like I had wanted to. The only thing I've heard about it was that it wasn't that great, but I still intend to watch it for myself to judge.
Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2025?
The second season of The Last Of Us and Daredevil: Born Again. For BLs, Desire, and The General's Son. Soul Sisters and Only You for GLs. I've always been curious about Bad and Crazy, as well. Plus there is a cdrama (hopefully) coming out next year called Shadow Love, and the trailer for that got me intrigued.
Which TV show impressed you least in 2024?
The third campaign of Critical Role has been kind of sluggish for me to continue on with it, even through recaps and highlights.
Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2025 unless things significantly improve?
Nothing that really stands out, at the moment.
Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?
At this point, I don't even know for sure.
Your main fandom of the year?
Meet You At The Blossom
Your favorite film you watched this year?
Black Christmas (1974), the V/H/S franchise specifically V/H/S: 94, V/H/S: 85, V/H/S: 99, and V/H/S: Viral.
Your favorite book read this year?
I sadly haven't read much this year. :(
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Discovering XG this year has been a godsend. I can literally just recommend their entire discography, but their recent release of the second mini-album, "AWE", absolutely blew me away, particularly with "HOWLING". I didn't know anything could top "WOKE UP", which that is a beast of a song all on its own, but "HOWLING" is by far their best song and best music video of the year.
"Take Me Back To Eden" album by Sleep Token, another artist I discovered this year as well, is absolutely hauntingly beautiful and I've been listening to it constantly. The songs that I've been having on repeat have been "The Apparition", "Ascensionism" and "Rain".
"So I Danced", "Don't Go Insane" and "Peanut Butter & Tears" by DPR IAN (yet another artist I discovered this year) have been on repeat this year.
And Dreamcatcher's recent comeback album, "Virtuous", was also a favorite this year for me. Particularly with the songs "Justice" and "2 Rings", plus of course their Christmas themed song, "My Sweet Christmas Love", which is so fun and cute and so them. I'm mainly curious about what is going to happen next on their journey.
Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?
Meet You At The Blossom.
Your favorite online fandom community of the year?
The Thai BL/GL side of fandom has been very wonderful, I've been discovering so many good dramas and am now so excited about upcoming ones into the new year.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Definitely Meet You At The Blossom, and being excited to see more Thai productions of Chinese danmei, it seems to be a perfect loophole to avoid the strict guidelines of censorship reviews.
As mentioned above, XG is perhaps the best discovery I've had this year, at least in terms of music. Ever since getting into them I have been devouring everything. I enjoy listening and discovering new music all the time, and I have many artists that I love, but there comes that artist that truly just grabs a hold on you and doesn't let go. XG became that for me this year. They are honestly the whole package for me and I'm obsessed.
Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?
Revisiting some of my past fandoms, American Horror Story, Ravenswood, and Gilmore Girls to be exact. Also celebrating some 20th anniversaries of shows I had loved (Angel, Roswell, Battlestar Galactica), making all the nostalgia of them even more real.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Whew, oh boy. I feel like there was a lot of disappointments this year from all sides (fandom, celebrities, political), I wouldn't even know where to begin. I think I would just end up writing a gigantic essay ranting about each individual case.
Watcher Entertainment became quite a letdown. After their stunt of announcing their own streaming service and wanting to put everything behind a paywall when it had initially been free, the manner of which that whole controversy happened and the tone deafness of it all, that really was a massive disappointment. I enjoyed watching Shane and Ryan when I discovered BFU in 2020, and I was supportive and happy for them when they moved on from Buzzfeed to create their own channel to focus on their own creative work themselves, so this felt like such a slap in the face and really soured me to them. I stopped watching them instantly and haven't gone back.
Linkin Park returning only to hire a Scientologist and rape apologist as their new lead vocalist certainly soured me to the band as a whole.
The abrupt cancellation of The Acolyte was shocking and disappointing, more so because much of it was based on the massive hate campaign against the show before it even aired, the racism and misogyny targeted towards the cast and creator, and how Disney failed to protect them from such harassment, even after the cancellation the cast, mainly Amandla Stenberg, still is recently a lot of hate comments and death threats. There's still no acknowledgement from Disney about this as they are just blaming high costs (that they set themselves) for the cancellation rather than the malicious hate campaign against it from the beginning. It's despicable, disappointing, upsetting, and frustrating. At least there's been tons of articles and people talking about the unfairness of this cancellation and fans have created a campaign to help save, or at least support, the cast and the show despite it all.
In general, "AI" (generative algorithm model) taking over everything, especially in fandom spaces where some think it's okay to use it for fanworks. Fuck all the way off with that.
(Believe me, there's more, but at the moment these are the biggest standouts that I can think of.)
Your fandom boyfriend(s) of the year?
Zongzheng Huaien (Meet You At The Blossom), Qimir (The Acolyte), Shen Zhiheng (Snowfall), Ryoma Shiba (Love Is A Poison), Luke Danes (Gilmore Girls)
Your fandom girlfriend(s) of the year?
Aylin (23.5 Degrees), Alpha (23.5 Degrees), and although I didn't watch it Aubrey Plaza as Rio/Death in Agatha All Along because, well, it's Aubrey Plaza.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Meet You At The Blossom and its uncensored glory. :D
The most missed of your old fandoms?
I've actually ended up joining a general television/media community this year where its main goal is to invite discussions surrounding television through weekly prompts. It's something I think I've been missing a lot, community conversations and discussions, it's not always fandom-based but it can be since it's centered around television. Since I say this every year with this question on this particular meme, I do miss that sense of community and, while it is small, I'm glad that at least there is something where I can participate.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Aside what's already been said, I am curious about the Terrifier horror movie franchise. Reading up on it and how wild and over-the-top wacky gory it is, I'm intrigued.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Daredevil: Born Again, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Saw XI, the various Thai BL/GLs (The General's Son, Desire, Soul Sisters, Only You, the second season of Pit Babe), plus all the other Asian dramas that I still have on my list to watch that I need to get to. Also? XG is going to be at Coachella next year! Do I care about Coachella? Not really, but this is going to be the biggest platform for the girls to get further exposure since their recent world tour and I'm just happy for them.
The length of my answers always goes on way longer than I intended them to be, lol.
My goal for 2025 is to start watching more shows and movies, mainly from the list I've been keeping of ones that I've been wanting to eventually get to but never could find the time or mental energy to do so. This is the same with books, too. I have a collection of danmei that I've gotten and I keep on putting it off due to the justification that I need to have all the volumes before starting, but that's really just an excuse, especially since I am a slow reader anyway. Basically, I need to light the fire underneath my own butt and get to work on starting the media that could potentially become my newest obsession in the new year.

Date: 2025-01-10 11:46 am (UTC)Yeah, with everything that's been going on it truly does feel like that whole controversy happened long ago. Just thinking about how all of that went down bums me out.
Though I suppose this is probably rooted in the crossover between fandom spaces and more 'normal' social media, where everything is increasingly being seen as content.
Yeah, and it's so unfortunate. :/ I hate it so much.
