What an interesting timeline we live in.

icons is hosting a friending meme.
++ My thread for the still ongoing holiday love meme 2024.
++ Perhaps it's been such a long devastatingly crapsack of a year for news coverage that I'm in a "this might as well happen too" headspace, but let me tell you I've been incredibly fascinated with the events that have been happening surrounding the United Healthcare CEO shooting, mainly the public reactions in the aftermath and the reports that follow. It's like a surreal movie plot happening in real time, from the carved bullets to the backpack with Monopoly money, the method of how he got away, and recently NYC held a look-alike contest. Seriously, I haven't witnessed anything like this before. What will come out from this? I don't know. But as of right now as it's still ongoing it's been slightly making up for the depressing political outcome from November, that's for sure. Also yes, it goes without saying that while the act itself is bad, considering how shitty the American healthcare system is and how insurance companies are greedy assholes who deny claims constantly and ruin the lives of so many people who are in dire need of medical help, nobody should be surprised this happened or how the people have been reacting to it.
Between this and the failed coup by the president of South Korea (albeit a more serious situation), it's been one interesting last month of the year for news.

I will say I feel for his loved ones, seeing the celebrations on social media. Whatever he was like as a person, there were people who loved him, including two sons. I am sorry they have to see that. However, I think you put it very well.
I want to believe that this might actually spur conversation, but from what I've seen, CEOs are doing less reckoning and instead are talking about extra security measures. Still, maybe it will spur something. I would love for a change.

Date: 2024-12-12 08:56 pm (UTC)Since writing this post things have surely escalated, and it went from being entertaining to depressing rather quickly. There is a conversation happening among the people, which is good, however the media is trying to cover all of that up with nonsensical coverage that basically fabricates and twists the narrative, including playing dumb as to being confused why this even occurred at all. It's honestly frustrating, but it truly gives a sense of the class divide. I don't know how long it'll last, of course, but seeing so much support for Luigi on social media and online spaces, the cause and making people share their own stories with being mistreated by the healthcare industry/insurance companies, it'll be interesting to see where this leads to.

I've been watching and listening to the protest songs calling for the South Korean pres's impeachment and it's heartening to see the people come together to protest and boost morale.

Date: 2024-12-09 03:56 pm (UTC)We all decided that we weren't going to use violence against each other to protect ourselves, when we created society; we decided that the state would use violence on our behalf to PROTECT its citizens. But when the state turns on its own citizens? Uses violence against them, not to protect them? Then we don't have to fulfil our part of the bargain (not using violence and leaving violence to the state to use on our behalf) because the state isn't fulfilling its part (using violence to protect us/on our behalf, not against us). Soooo yeah. That's when I realised I'm okay with violence to protest violence, vigilante justice when the state fails to protect you etc.
Violence is wrong when we use it for ourselves, but not when the law uses it for us... and that's because we have an agreement, but an agreement only works if both sides keep to it.

Date: 2024-12-09 03:45 pm (UTC)I have see a few people trying to say "oh it's heartless to celebrate someone's murder" and frankly I'm not seeing so much celebration as people pointing out that the guy was responsible for thousands and thousands of deaths and extreme financial hardship. People, myself included, just can't care a lot that he reaped the consequence of his choices. The company could have actually been more ethical and saved lives and those at the top would still be filthy rich. I have no sympathy for people who decided to sacrifice lives so they could have a second yacht or whatever.

Exactly. Almost all Americans have faced issues with the healthcare system one way or another, insurance companies in particular are very unsympathetic and love to string people along only to continue denying them what they need while financially bleeding them dry. I've read countless of people's personal stories and it's so heartbreaking. It's quite soul crushing when you have medical needs that cannot be met because insurance companies make you jump through numerous hoops only to say that those needs are "unnecessary" (as the new CEO has doubled down on harder on those policies, it seems). This should be a talking point for change within.

Date: 2024-12-12 04:59 pm (UTC)Meanwhile if companies insist on bankrupting people for health care or leaving them to suffer or watch their family members suffer... they're creating the next vigilantes. Pain radicalizes people, poverty radicalizes people, being made to suffer so someone can buy multiple yachts radicalizes people.
I saw the video of the new CEO. It's a strategy... not one that'll leave him safe but it's a strategy.

Oh definitely. I've seen people attempting to bring up his privileged upbringing and possible political alignment as a way to dissuade others from feeling sympathy towards him, but truly that doesn't matter. Pain, especially chronic pain, doesn't discriminate, and being put through the wringer by insurance companies who only see dollar signs instead of human beings will absolutely change the way someone views these kinds of things. And let's be honest, if someone who has had such a privileged life has had these kinds of issues and complications and been denied by insurance companies, what does that mean for the rest of us who haven't been so privileged? Once someone unfortunately goes through that process, whether themselves or they witness it through others in their lives, it fundamentally changes them, radicalizes them, to how deeply fucked up and rotten this system really is.

I stand corrected, it's not the new CEO of UHC (which idk if they appointed someone new yet, or aren't saying) but the already established CEO of UHG which is the main company that UHC was under.

Date: 2024-12-13 12:50 pm (UTC)Somehow we're to believe that killing one person is tragic but not allow ourselves to examine the fact that that one person was responsible for tens of thousands of deaths and bankruptcies and untold ongoing pain and suffering... if one is bad surly we must be allowed to say the other is bad as well.
I agree that everything they're trying to dig up doesn't seem to be landing. So what if this kid was from a wealthy family? You're right that it shows us even more that the system doesn't work. If someone can be wealthy and still suffer more than they should be because a company needs more profits this quarter that system is fundamentally broken and everyone should be paying attention. Even the bootlickers who are saying the kid was wrong should pay attention because it's not like they'll get better treatment when they are sick or in pain. Heck look at the person who called in the tip that got Luigi caught - they likely won't even get the reward because they didn't call the right tip line and the FBI part of the award needs someone else to nominate you to get the money so... it's just another broken system that was never intended to pay out.
Oh - good correction on the video. I still think someone there really really doesn't like their boss because that video leak is essentially painting a target onto that CEO.
