Turn around, look at what you see.....

++ Apparently The Neverending Story is getting a brand new film series adaptation of the book, with See-Saw Films partnering with Michael Ende Productions. So at least the author's production team will be behind this. I absolutely adore the 1984 movie, it's a childhood favorite and there's no contest of how amazing that is, nobody can argue with that, especially when it comes to the set design and practical effects and music. There is a reason why it's considered a classic alongside other 80s dark fantasy films, it truly feels magical, like another world. Although that is only half of the book itself. And as much as I unironically enjoyed the 1990 sequel with Jonathan Brandis it didn't quite hit the same way (we don't talk about the third sequel, there is no third sequel), so it will be interesting to see how they manage to make these new films that follows the book. Also, I do wonder if they're going to have Atreyu be green as he is in the book itself.
This was only announced, so we'll have to wait and see what is to be done. I'm curious, albeit a bit apprehensive. If nothing else, I want them to keep the darker elements of the story. If you're not traumatizing a whole new generation of children (and adults reliving this in a different adaptation) with scenes like the Swamps of Sadness and Gmork then what even is the point, y'know?

Date: 2024-03-31 11:15 pm (UTC)It'll be interesting to see if I enjoy the new film series. I never saw the movie (or sequels) in full when I was little, so I only watched the first movie as an adult and it didn't quite grab me, nor did the book. But everyone around me loved it. Hope fans of the series get something new to love!

Date: 2024-04-03 08:37 am (UTC)Some stories don't grab people as they do others, and that's okay. I am curious to see what they do with this new adaptation and what it will feature. It's going to be interesting when comparing it to the 80s movie, which will undoubtedly happen because it is a classic, but it does make me wonder how many people who haven't watched the original or read the book will react to it.

Date: 2024-04-01 08:59 am (UTC)I have no memory of seeing Neverending story. I remember talking about this with a cousin of mine who is a few years older than me and she couldn't believe I haven't. Its's very much my type of film and I it doesn't really make sense to me that I haven't seen it, either at home or at said cousin's house where I did spend lots of time. I have seen pictures from it, so I have those in my head, but I can tell you nothing about what actually happens in the story.

Date: 2024-04-02 10:33 am (UTC)Heh--my thoughts exactly. I have loved The Neverending Story for as long as I can remember. My grandmother recorded it off HBO for me on a VHS tape, and that was my only copy for a long time. First time I watched the actual cleaned up DVD transfer, on a high def screen, with headphones on, was mind-blowing. I have read the book three times, first in Junior High when I found a beat up paperback at a rummage sale, later the hardback edition with the colored text to differentiate between the Real World and Fantastica. And while there is a lot they left out, I'm kind of glad with the first movie they decided to just COMMIT to telling Atreyu's story properly instead of trying to cram the whole novel into one film. (Well, sort of. It feels comparably magical and not like it's pandering to anyone.)
That's what concerns me about a new adaptation: if they don't get to make it as, at the very least, a miniseries, they'll have to either cut out a lot of story or cram everything into too short a run time, again.
