It was recently announced that the new Spartacus revival series has been greenlit by STARZ and will be called Spartacus: House of Ashur. Based on the description, it's a "what if" kind of situation.

On one hand, because this is a "what if" concept it's essentially an alternate universe not at all connected with the main series, so it can easily be treated as its own separate thing. However I'll be honest, this is kind of a weird decision for the Spartacus series to be revived. Ashur wasn't exactly a favorite of mine, in fact he was quite unlikeable and not in a "love to hate" sort of way either (so much so that when the actor appeared on The Expanse I had such a visceral reaction before seeing beyond his portrayal of Ashur, which should tell you how good the actor was for playing someone that despicable), and his death of being brutally beheaded by Naevia was satisfying and cathartic. So it is a bit strange, especially out of all of the other characters and possible storylines they could've focused on.

With that being said, however, perhaps if this does well they could get renewed for another season that does something else. Make it an anthology series, whether doing more "what ifs" with other characters or even doing that Caesar spin-off that was originally pitched years ago.

I don't know. I'm uncertain how to really feel about this. I don't want to judge too quickly before it even happens, this is just my immediate reaction to reading the news.


Regardless, I have to say one of my favorite aspects of the Spartacus series is the dialogue. The way they used language in that show was amazing. Plus, if this gets more people to watching the main series and getting kind of a rejuvenating of the fandom in some way, they'd be a massive bonus.

I ONLY know that actor from 'The Expanse' and he was SO amazing in that role....

If you can, I definitely do recommend watching the Spartacus series because he portrays a very different kind of character from Cotyar. Also the show is awesome, as well. So many talented actors.

I'm curious about a Spartacus reboot but also a bit cynical in that... maybe they should just make something new at this point. It feels a bit like a reboot for the name recognition but it's been so long that I'm not sure how many viewers that will actually pull in. VS being a reboot because someone had a brilliant idea.

I'm game to give it a try. I just wish more networks would invest in new ideas.

I wish they could've gone with the Caesar spin-off that was initially planned, since he was introduced in the last season and it made for a perfect leading into something new after the Spartacus series finale. It would've been so cool, a start of a new chapter in the same universe. Instead they're just doing an alternate version of the show they already did. I don't know, again I'm torn.

I loved the series so much that I'm supporting the cast and watch all the things they are in and wish them all nothing but good things in life, so I'm cautiously curious about the new show, because like you I hated Ashur a lot. I'm not sure what to think about the concept, but I'll definitely give it a try.

Yeah, this is just a basic description that the final result could actually end up very different and surprising us. But then again, I've been disappointed by revivals/reboots of older shows before, so I am still a bit apprehensive on what might happen. It's definitely a "wait and see" kind of thing at this point. I love the main series though, so regardless this news makes me just want to do a rewatch.
