DW and the future.

Here is my DW account.

With everything going on and the uncertainty of things, I've decided to finally back things up there. I'll still be posting here for the time being since I'm in the middle of setting up and figuring things out over there, and I'll most likely be posting the same content on both accounts during this period (since crossposting isn't available anymore), but eventually I will be on DW entirely.

(Note: I have tried to import my entries, but they have failed/aborted multiple times, some have said that they've had the same issue with entries/comments, this seems to be an issue on LJ's end and I don't know whether or not it'll be fixed. On one hand I don't necessarily mind starting completely over on DW, however I've been on LJ since 2003 and would love to at least preserve the memories of nearly twenty years of being on this site. So a part of me is kicking myself for not backing things up sooner.)

I've been hearing varying reports from different people, about how some have been able to get their entries imported although it took a while, others say it took a really long time (weeks, months) before it finally succeeded, and others are just having no luck at all. There's even been issues with comments not importing, from those who have crossposted for a while now. Regardless, it does seem like the entire system is quite unreliable and broken. I'm hoping that I eventually get lucky enough to get it at the right moment where it works, though, but idk.

I liked LJ too, but things have unfortunately changed and as much as I wished it didn't have to come to this, it has.

Yeah. I think I was just holding onto the nostalgia. Having been here for so long and witnessed firsthand many ups and downs this site has been through, I truly thought that I would stick it out, and in way I have, but this place has gradually become less and less active (esp fandom-wise) than how it used to be, and with current events happening I think I would feel more comfortable with just transferring over to DW.

I'm sherrilina there too! Sorry you didn't get a chance to back up. :( I did it a few years back when the transfer to Russian servers first happened, and have cross-posted since...but still, I spent so much time on my LJ, it sucks to lose that and recent comments since the last backup. Though my LJ is already messed up because of Tinypic's downfall.

Importing entries/comments seem to only work sometimes, depending, like it's a guessing game on whether or not it'll succeed, and I've seen different people say that it worked for them after some time, like weeks of the request to import failed until somehow, miraculously, it did. It's very broken and unreliable, so I'm just going to keep trying and hopefully it'll work.

(The problem is that I have nearly 20 years worth of entries, and I don't want to lose any of that, and if there is another method of backing it all up elsewhere I'm all for it, because as much as I'm sure people don't go looking back at a post I made in like, say, 2005 or something, I still want to preserve it for myself, y'know?)

Ah ok that sounds like my experience when I first tried to back it up years ago, lol...so maybe that isn't related to recent developments! I do remember I emailed the help desk and like a long time later someone there finally fixed things, I got a real email from a person.

And yup, LJ is my most consistent diary attempt, so I don't want to lose anything either.

I do, same username. I don't use it though I have tried to make it look pretty and all that. I just never got a feel for it. I rarely check there. It's not home. We'll see if LJ really goes under if I take a leap. But please add me, I'll see that I add people back in the coming days that I haven't already on my list.

I initially felt the same way, as well, when I first created my DW account many years ago. It was a great alternative, but it just didn't feel the same, at least at the time, which is probably why I never crossed over there until now.

I crossposted for about half a year or more from there but I could never stand looking at ... what do they call it the "Subscribers Page" the equivalent to the "Friends Page" here. Don't get me wrong, I even paid for a year once because it's not that I hate the project quite the opposite – I thought it should be commended but for me it just doesn't feel right. It's not my playground so to speak... I mean that in an innocent way -- like it feels to me as if there's a if there's swing set missing and it's not close enough to my house. So for me it's a maybe if LJ actually disappears but not before.

I keep hearing that, and I want to be hopeful since I've heard that it took people weeks before somehow by sheer luck. I just want to know how often should I keep resubmitting it? Because it's quite frustrating and disheartening every time it doesn't take, every time I see the multiple notifications in my DW inbox saying how the import failed.

The importer has random working windows. I tried importing every day for two weeks and it kept failing, so I gave up. Then I randomly tried it again and it worked! So it's very hit or miss.

I imported my entries a few years back so there's a gap but at this point I'm figuring it's better than nothing. I think there are programs to download just a full copy of your LJ so I'm trying to find one of those so that I can at least have a personal backup. I've been on here forever. Losing the site would suck.

Already have you on DW so I'm glad we won't lose touch if things go south.

Already had you! I totally forgot about the whole LJ being owned/bought by a Russian company way back, but it might be a bigger thing now...

But LJ had been not playing nice with any other journal site for ~2 months now? I think the DW staff posted that it was basically refusing any/all calls from off sites for some reason, and no one from the LJ side responded to them so.

I remember when I first tried to import my entries in 2017 it also didn't work for a while. Hopefully this is also just a temporary glitch. I'd love to back up my LJ.

So far I couldn't get into using DW, but now it seems kinda more urgent.

Thank you. I can't believe the importing of entries actually worked this time! It really was luck, because it failed for me so many times over the last several days, but somehow it worked. I'm so happy. :D

And yeah, there's just been a lot of uncertainty for some time now I think, but what's been happening recently has really been what cemented people's decision to transfer over to DW.
