++ Revenge is apparently getting a reboot. They claim that it'll be more of a sequel, but just by the description, nah, it's basically just a reboot. I'll be honest, yes, I adored the show when it first premiered but it did start drifting off in the later seasons. But the reason why the show popped off initially was its unique structure in the first season and of course the casting, particularly of Emily van Camp who was utter perfection as Emily Thorne. I honestly think that the backbone of the entire show was Emily, Nolan, and Victoria. In fact, the only sequel series I would ever want is for Emily and Nolan being the most epic duo wrecking havoc by scheming and plotting. So unless that's what's involved, I'm not at all interested.

++ Fresh Off The Boat will be ending after six seasons. Constance Wu must be thrilled by this news. Jokes aside though, while I only sporadically watched the show here and there I liked it, and six seasons is definitely a good enough run to end on. It is essentially the first long-running Asian-American sitcom series in American television history.

++ It seems that someone thought it was a good idea to reboot the Scream franchise without anyone from the originals attached. I'll be honest, I don't like this idea. I absolutely love the Scream franchise, I think all four movies were great in their own ways (and was actually hoping for the possibility of a Scream 5 before Wes passed away). I never got around to watching the television series that was made because I wasn't interested, but I know that Wes Craven was involved with it. But with Wes Craven gone and Kevin Williamson not involved with this project, it just seems rather pointless to resurrect something that probably has no intention of continuing the legacy that Wes Craven already built. I know, many original films or franchises often get remakes and reboots done all the time, this isn't the first nor will it be the last as we should just naturally assume now that anything popular will get the remake treatment no matter what, but that's what makes this even more frustrating. The genius of the series was its metatexual tone and subversion, its what made it unique in the first place. Without that, it'll just be another generic slasher flick with no spark or charm. Besides, like what was said in Scream 4, "don't fuck with the original".

Next to Emily's and Nolan's friendship, I must say though probably controversial, I was also a big fan of Emily's and Amanda's relationship and how it evolved – you got the feeling that in prison they may have needed each other though Emily already started hatching plans to manipulate Amanda (using the names they later went by otherwise it would be too confusing), then as Amanda re-surfaced in Emily's life it was an inconvenience but you early on got the impression that Amanda wasn't fighting for another payday but to have Emily back as a friend and eventually actually succeeded.

I remember being really annoyed by Faux!Amanda because, like you said, she was more of an inconvenience at the time and it was clear that Emily had just used and manipulated her into her plan of revenge by switching identities and such, so when she came back into her life it was like she was intruding into something that she was long plotting and could mess things up. It's been a while since I've rewatched the show in full though, so perhaps my opinions and feelings will change.

I think the relationship had many layers. Even back in prison. And I really loved how it evolved, how Emily came to value Amanda's loyalty and friendship so that in the end her death devastated her so much more. When Amanda died and Emily held on to her body in the water until the lifeboat didn't have enough air and she she couldn't hold on anymore – I honestly barely cry when watching TV but that was one of those moments.

I feel like they just reboot everything now and it's exhausting.

It feels like almost every announcement now is for the next reboot or remake or even a revival, and every single time it happens I lose faith in humanity a little bit more. Granted I don't think reboots/remakes are necessarily inherently bad when done well, but we unfortunately are living in an era where that's what the industry thinks is profitable and therefore thinks that's what they need to do for anything and everything, and it makes me sad and tired.

I never watched Revenge, but rebooting a show less than ten years after its premiere seems too soon.

Constance Wu must be thrilled by this news.
That was my first thought when I heard about it. Pretty sure most people thought that lol

That's the culture we live in now, unfortunately. Something popular five years ago will most likely be rebooted for a quick buck, because nostalgia y'know.

I absolutely agree with you! I am tired of all the reboots who don't have the charme of the originals. :(
I don't need this kind of reeboot because the original movies were great!

Apparently it's being reported that it's going to be Scream 5 (so far), but there's no information about whether it's a continuation of the series or a reboot or whatever. And quite frankly, unless the original people who previously worked on the other movies are on board, I really don't trust anyone else to handle the franchise. There was something special about Wes Craven and his vision of these stories and I don't want anyone else coming in and messing it up.

But I will say, he did predict it in-verse with the fictitious Stab movies, the original ones were about Sidney's life but then the rest of that franchise started making stuff up and are by far removed from the original concept altogether.

It was. I haven't watched the recent seasons but I remember really liking the show and finding it hilarious. Six seasons total is a good run for any show, so they did well.

Aw man, I really like Fresh Off the Boat! But with all the drama it makes sense for it to come to an end. I'm still not even all the way caught up.

I could be wrong but I think their contracts were also up after this season, as well. I also don't know whether the whole drama that happened earlier had any influence on this decision. But either way, it had a good run.

Yeah, the show was groundbreaking in a lot of ways! I wonder what Constance Wu is going to work on next.

Kind of sick of all the reboots, especially shows that didn't end all that long ago. How about some original ideas?

Agreed. And I think most people have this opinion as well, but unfortunately the industry is stuck in wanting to manipulate audiences with nostalgia for a quick buck. It's sad and disappointing because we could be having so many original story ideas being placed out there, and yet those get knocked down for another pointless and lazy remake of something that only is several years old.

If you want to remake or reboot something, try something that's a few decades old and didn't do so well. Trying to out-do something that is popular is a bad move, imho.

I've often daydreamed about producing (if I were a producer) a new Neverending Story movie, because as good as the first film was it left out the second half of the book and even several things from the first half, and I'd like to create a version closer to the book, with modern special effects, so audiences wouldn't miss out on those things anymore.

Huh. I guess we're moving past remakes and straight into reboot of not so old TV shows?

Six seasons is a good place to end a show. I get that no one ever wants a show to end, but I'd rather have an organic ending than something dragged out a la Supernatural.

I feel like that's been happening gradually, alongside revivals of old shows too. I consider this the "re" era of television (reboots/remakes/revivals) -- sometimes there are good ideas for some of them, but most of them not so much.

Six seasons is kind of ideal, imho.

Emily and Nolan being the most epic duo

I know, right? I mean, if you want a sequel series that people would want to watch, that is it right there. But otherwise? Nah.

I agree with everything you said on Revenge and most of what you said on Scream. Besides, Scream 4 functioned as the reboot while not shitting on the series.

From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
Exactly. I mean, the entire Scream franchise was about self-awareness of the genre while still respecting it at the same time. Wes Craven was able to do that incredibly well, and unless you have the same people involved working on another one to make sure it follows the same way of how he did it, it won't be good.
