++ I'm trying to keep my sanity with the current state of the world. I don't talk politics on my journal because it gives me a headache (and because I'll just end up ranting and raging and giving myself more of a headache), but I do want to remind everyone to please, please vote in the upcoming elections in November.
++ I'm sure people have heard by now that Netflix cancelled Luke Cage, the second show they've cancelled of their Marvel lineup within a single week. Iron Fist's cancellation didn't surprise me, nor did it bother me. But Luke Cage? The show that supposedly broke Netflix when it first premiered? Where it still held strong during its second season and is still favorable with audiences? That was honestly shocking to me, since the decision literally came out of left field. Reading articles and such, I've seen claims about there being disputes between Netflix and Disney, creative differences over how a third season would be written, and then rumors about the possibility of Heroes For Hire being made as a replacement of both cancelled shows. Regardless, this furthers the concerns people have been having over the fate of the other Marvel shows. I don't know what's going to happen. All I know is that I want Jessica Jones to continue going on, even though the showrunner is leaving after S3, and that I want all these characters to interact with each other again at some point. The Defenders may have been meh, but them teaming up was fantastic and it would be a waste to not try to make it happen again.
++ I'm honestly really enjoying the current season of Doctor Who so far. The first two episodes were essentially just getting acquainted and reacquainted with everything, a new Doctor, new Companions, building a new Sonic Screwdriver, and finding the TARDIS. Both episodes were good, but I definitely think the third episode is definitely the best one so far. It centered entirely on Rosa Parks, and it was beautifully done. It was both uncomfortable to watch but also uplifting and powerful at the same time. The ending got to me real good. I read that the show is getting back to the educational aspects it once had, and they certainly did that by tackling real issues that effect us today, by not sugarcoating the hardships that marginalized groups face, but also by giving us hope that we can make a difference. It might not happen immediately, but sometimes a single action can take that step forward for the future. Plus, the episode was co-written by Malorie Blackman, the first black writer for Doctor Who. It was just so great. Seriously, it feels good to be excited about this show again. It truly does. :)
++ Upon seeing Venom (still awesome, btw), I saw trailers for upcoming movies that I thought looked interesting. First is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which I saw the teaser for previously but it just refreshes the fact that it's coming out soon. I'm curious about it, it seems like the perfect Christmas/holiday type of movie to see. Next was Bumblebee, which is part of the Transformers franchise. And I'll be honest, while I only watched the first film I never really cared much for these movies. However, Bumblebee actually looks adorable? And it's the first film of the franchise to not be directed by Michael Bay (who I don't like), so that's something. Plus, Hailee Steinfeld will be in it, who I think is a solid actress in her own right. So, we'll see. And then, of course, Captain Marvel. I'm already hyped for that movie, but seeing the trailer on the big screen was super awesome regardless. I'm not much of a moviegoer these days, some of these I'll end up seeing either way late or once it's released on DVD, but I do know that Captain Marvel is one that I'm highly anticipating seeing in the theaters immediately when it comes out.

Date: 2018-10-29 11:07 am (UTC)I don't know what to say about Marvel/Netflix anymore. I feel like they needed some kind of excuse to cancel Luke Cage and "creative differences" always works. It's not just Disney with their own streaming service and soon owning most of Hulu anymore. Apparently, Netflix is also cleaning house to get rid of all the show produced by other studios. I agree about The Defenders. The story wasn't great, but I will eventually watch it again to see them all interact. I need more Jessica/Matt! And I really loved that conversation at the Chinese restaurant. I think I watched that scene three times.

They probably just only want all of their original content to be available and not be beholden to any other property, which sucks because their Marvel lineup has been doing incredibly well for them. I mean, at this point I'm not sure what's going to happen, and part of me hopes that they'll find a way around this, but idk. I haven't really heard anything, only speculations from others. I mentioned before that it was unclear about what their endgame for their Marvel lineup was going to be, if they even planned that far ahead, so I'm hoping that whatever happens we'll at least get some kind of interaction with all these characters together again as a sense of closure. I mean, I adored Jessica and Matt bantering together, and part of me still hopes that Jessica/Luke will get back together somehow in the future since I love them so much.

Date: 2018-10-30 10:03 am (UTC)Even if Disney owns the properties, Netflix probably makes a lot of money with these shows since they are so popular. I'm guessing that a lot of people get Netflix accounts to watch the Marvel shows and hang around if they find something else they like.
As much as I love Claire, I did prefer Jessica/Luke. Maybe he'll just appear on her show again.

Date: 2018-10-29 02:15 pm (UTC)At first I thought The Nutcracker and the Four Realms looked meh and cliche, but I accidentally happened upon a spoiler weeks ago that actually had the effect of making me interested in seeing it. Be warned, the things that are spoiler-texted on the TV Tropes page for the movie include major plot twists even though the movie was a good ways off from coming out when they were added.

Date: 2018-10-29 03:09 pm (UTC)I mean even if all these shows get cancelled on Netflix because Disney re-claims their rights, that does not necessarily mean they get picked up again by the new Disney streaming service, does it?
I'm ambivalent about Doctor Who. I love Jodie as the Doctor. But the feel of the show is more Sarah Jane Adventures than Doctor Who. Not that that's a bad thing in my eyes actually, at times I thought SJA was the much better show tbh. I'm also a bit afraid of the writing of the Doctor as a character, does Chibnall write 13 so bordering on passive because she's a she or because that's his version of the Doctor. I'm definitely interested to see more of Yas, she's obviously very driven and bright but we haven't seen what makes her tick yet. I guess that's the trouble with so many people in the TARDIS - much like during the classic series when it was Nyssa, Tegan and Adric - it felt crowded pretty fast. But we'll see. I liked the first and third episode so far... though I was a bit surprised that the Doctor let Ryan get away with killing/disintegrating the bad guy in the last one or perhaps I missed something. One thing is for sure, I'll be happy if I never have to endure Simm as the Master again.

I honestly don't know. I've seen some express concern about this, should it ever happen, because would that mean the shows would have to censor or tone back their content? While Disney as a corporation owns a lot of things that aren't necessarily kid or family-friendly in content, some are still concerned that there might be content control regardless. But I'm not really an expert on this, I just know that people are overall concerned about Disney taking control of everything, which is understandable.
I've had a rather complicated relationship with Doctor Who. It's been on and off with me for various reasons. But with this new era, with not only a new Doctor but new everything, I'm just enjoying it so far. I'm hoping it's not just a honeymoon phase and it continues to be awesome.

Date: 2018-10-30 12:49 am (UTC)Well, my problem with New Who is that I never cared for its showrunners. RTD and Moffat, while having some good ideas, also did some super problematic things. Given that I do not have much regard for Chibnall as a writer, I'm surprised how well this season is going so far. I hope it continues to do so.

Date: 2018-11-01 04:22 pm (UTC)It is the same for me. We had last sunday a state election here in Germany and I told my parents, they should vote, too. They did and I did it as well. As long as I have the right to vote, I will vote.
I have the first two seasons of Luke Cage on my computer. It's sad that Netflix cancelled the third season. :(

Date: 2018-11-02 03:48 am (UTC)It's just really strange why they cancelled Luke Cage, since it was doing so well. It makes me nervous about the future of the other shows, particularly Jessica Jones because I love that show and you cannot take Krysten Ritter as Jessica away from me.

Date: 2018-11-07 02:08 pm (UTC)On the other hand, Thirteen is fantastic so far. Slightly more episodic than I'd like, and little bummed about the 10 eps/season now, but eh.

Date: 2018-11-07 08:39 pm (UTC)As for Jessica Jones, I don't know. I know the showrunner is leaving, but I don't think they've thought that far ahead of tying things up. There's a lot of uncertainty right now that many are scared what this means for the future.
I actually really like how episodic DW is, tbh. I think we all became too accustomed to the way Moffat did things (i.e. trying to make everything a dire higher stakes situation despite it not really needing to) that having simple episodic formula may seem a bit jarring to some people at the moment. But I personally like it. It's a breath of fresh air.

Date: 2018-11-10 11:56 pm (UTC)I think the best gauge of where Netflix Marvel shows stand are to see if there's an announcement for Daredevil S4? It's the first of the post-Defender wave to come out, and should be on the timeline for getting S4 announced first- depending on what happen there, the rest will probably follow.
