++ Elementary got renewed for a seventh season. I was legitimately surprised by this news, since it's been speculated that this season, which premiered much later than previous seasons, would be its last. I'm happy it's not, though, because I adore Joan and Sherlock's relationship on this show.

++ Agents of SHIELD was another pleasant surprise since it's been renewed for a sixth season. Some were thinking that this might be the last season, since it was reported a while ago that the S5 finale could very well act like a series finale should the show not get renewed, so they were kind of prepared for the possibility regardless (which is what most shows should do, imho, always treat a season like it'll be the last one to at least feel somewhat completed). For me, while it's not always perfect, Agents of SHIELD has been a show that has only gotten stronger and better with each season, and despite the contract deal made with Marvel to coincide with the MCU which prevents them from doing certain things they want to do to progress the story at their own pace, they still manage to pull it off. The show is highly rated, having an overall 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and S5 alone is currently at 100%. So, it's doing something right with the way its orchestrating the storylines and character moments. Personally, I'm just happy to continue watching Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson being amazing on my screen for another season.

++ Along with some other renewal news, Bull (CBS) was renewed for a third season some while ago, and recently Siren (Freeform) was picked up for a second season. Aside from that, there hasn't been anything else worthwhile to mention in regards to renewals or cancellations, as far as I can tell. All the important announcements, at least regarding my shows, have already been reported. However, this year was particularly brutal when it came to cancellation announcements. I mean, you can say that about pretty much every year with upfronts depending on what you watch, but this year seemed like a massive bloodbath for certain networks.

++ And when it comes to newer upcoming shows and honestly, aside from the announcement of Guillermo del Toro's new horror anthology series which I'm very enthusiastically curious about, nothing else from the announcements has caught my eye or remotely interested me.

Really happy about the 'Elementary' renewal as well. Not primarily but also a bit because perhaps they can work something out with Natalie Dormer next season it would be good to see her back before the show ends. I particularly liked her scenes with Lucy Liu.

God, yes. I would love to see her back as well, it's been quite a while since she last appeared and it would be lovely to see her return with quite a bang. Her scenes with Lucy Liu are magnificent, and I really want to see what happens when Joan encounters Moriarty once again.

It was my understanding that they tired to get her back for season 6 and Natalie really wanted to but they couldn't make it happen because of scheduling conflicts. Not certain but she may have been filming the 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' miniseries. So yeah, I'm really hoping it works out for season 7. It'd be especially interesting since last I recall Moriarty was painting Joan's portrait, was she not? So their dynamic is rather fascinating.

That was the last time they saw each other face-to-face, though Moriarty did send Joan a letter, which had Natalie's voiceover reading the letter, but she was uncredited for that episode. Still, I want a proper return and reunion because I find this Moriarty so utterly fascinating especially with her interactions and obsession with Joan.

There are only 3 or 4 new shows that I'm gonna check out now (there are more in midseason and as always, the most interesting. Which sucks because often enough shows that are held off for too long are not that succesfull) but none of them scream MUST WATCH for me. Also,I will never watch a new show on FOX anymore and none of the CBS shows with a straight, male lead!

I'm happy about Siren though. I knew that it was doing great so I wasn't worried but it's always good getting a confirmation :)

I feel like, unless there is a new show that I've been anticipating for a while, most upcoming new shows probably won't interest me since their descriptions when announced are super vague and seem far too bland and generic. It won't be until they start airing when I see what they're about, because there will be some surprise gems, though those are pretty rare.

I'm surprised and pleased for both Elementary and SHIELD. I think I will also continue to watch Bull, even though this season wasn't as strong as the first one.

I was half-expecting them to end after their current running seasons, but it was a pleasant surprise to learn that they've both been renewed.

And yeah, I'm still enjoying Bull for what it is, because the cases are interesting and I do love certain characters, but I agree that it isn't as strong as the first season. Part of me hopes that they get back on their feet in the third.

I'm happy that Elementary got renewed! I'm super behind on the show so I was sad when I heard rumors that this was its last. When it was renewed I also found out that this is one of the shows that makes a lot of money for CBS oversees. I was like SEE. THIS SHOW IS GREAT lmao.

That's amazing to hear that it's doing really well overseas! I didn't really consider that part of the equation, but it makes sense. Elementary is one of those procedurals that, even though I may prefer some seasons to others, still remains consistent and enjoyable and I love the main actors so much. Lucy Liu and JLM have such a wonderful dynamic with each other and I'm happy that the show is continuing. :)

Same here! I know a lot of shows are aired oversees, but there's usually a big delay and/or, depending on the network, they don't take how well it does overseas into consideration. idk why I didn't think about it before with Elementary because CBS is one of those networks that keep shows around based on how well it does all around vs. just here. Plus, the various Sherlock incarnations draws viewers from all over the world so it makes sense that it's no different with Sherlock. I love the characters but not really the cases on this show lmao, but one of the things I complain about with procedural is that there's not enough character growth etc. and way more focus on the cases, leading me to abandon ship at some point. It's the opposite and I'd much rather have time watching the characters grow and interact with each other than compelling cases tbh.

Yep, hence the whole Nielsen debate we discussed earlier.

It's the opposite and I'd much rather have time watching the characters grow and interact with each other than compelling cases tbh.

For me, I like a good balance between the two. I would like there to be episodic cases that are actually interesting while also allowing the characters to grow and interact during the episodes, usually helped and assisted by said case. That's kind of what happens in Elementary, since the cases are more of a background necessity whereas the main focus is mostly centered around the characters themselves and whatever is happening with them.

Granted, I'm someone who doesn't mind a good procedural in general, just as long as it's presented well with good acting and interesting case concepts. Otherwise, it'll just be your basic cookie cutter procedural that I'm just like, meh.

Date: 2018-05-18 01:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icecoldrain.livejournal.com
Yep. I honestly don't know why any network still uses the Nielsen scale. One day they'll all switch to a more accurate one and one that's also accurate for the times. We'll probably be little old ladies by then though lol.

I like good procedurals as well. I'd def prefer a show to balance the cases and the character's lives etc., but if they're going to do more of one and flake out on the other, I'd prefer it to be more character driven then case, case, case and very little movement on the character front.

I'm hoping that it'll be sooner than later though, because I cannot foresee traditional media lasting much longer underneath their near-obsolete system when everything else is moving forward and evolving at a much quicker pace.

Same. I hope that more networks start to notice that the game has changed with technology the way music has been trying to catch up. My family was in the music business for a long time and even now, the music business is still trying to catch up with how things changed with technology even though companies like Apple with iTunes etc. have been around for over a decade now. Music careers were built on sales and then shows as an after thought. Now, while sales are what everyone wants, if an artist wants to make money they need to tour and sell shows because they get such a small amount from online sales and actual physical CD sales are way way down.

Woah, that's great news for Elementary! I'd already heard about AOS but not my Sherlock fix. It's been so good already this season, it's definitely one of my favorite shows and I miss it when it's gone. Speaking of shows in that vein, I'm really gonna miss Lucifer, as I thought it was shoe-in for renewal and then they dropped the hammer. Dang. It's too bad, not that I'd trade it for any of the other shows that got renewed, but you're definitely right that this has been an absolutely brutal cancellation group this year on FOX and ABC alike.

Elementary is such a delightful show, I've enjoyed it since day one and it just continues to be amazing. :)

Apparently, as I just found out, there are talks surrounding the possibility (https://youtu.be/ilY5WhyrejI) of Lucifer finding another network to call home. Not that this guarantees anything, mind you, but at least there is enough noise from the fanbase that it has created a stir and motivation from everyone involved with the show to try and do something to save it. And I really admire that, tbh.

I honestly didn't think Marvel's Agents of Shield was going to get renewed. The fact that it's renewed for 13 episodes and is airing during the summer, makes me feel like season 6 could be it's last season.

yay also for Bull! <3
I'm going to especially miss Lucifer :( I didn't see this one coming.

That's understandable. Procedurals will oftentimes be like that, I think. I've sometimes stopped watching certain shows without any particular reason why. And it's not that you dislike it or anything, but more about whether the content they're providing is doing anything for you at the moment.

I've read that they're hoping to get Lucifer renewed elsewhere, which is not always a guarantee but considering the strong response after the cancellation announcement it's really heartwarming seeing the efforts made by the people involved with the show. But yeah, hearing about its cancellation really was a shock because I actually did think it was doing well.

Pretty much everything I watch has been cancelled (except Instinct, which I was surprised to hear was renewed) and I was expecting all of it, but it still hurts. I think you're right that it was particularly bloody this year.

Someone on tumblr pointed out that with The Exorcist, Lucifer, Brooklyn 99 (and also Last Man on Earth, though I haven't seen that at all and can't comment) Fox cancelled every one of its shows with major LGBT characters, which... well. That's sure something, isn't it? My fingers are crossed for The Exorcist and Lucifer to get picked up by streaming services, because how bad the Nielson ratings were is only half the picture with both those shows, but who knows.

I kind of prefer fandoms where there won't be a new season/film/book because it means they can never go in a direction I don't like, so I take cancellations better than some, but it was definitely a rough year.

Siren getting picked up for another season encourages me to give it a shot!

It always hurts when your shows end up getting cancelled, no matter what. :(

Fox cancelled every one of its shows with major LGBT characters, which... well. That's sure something, isn't it?

I would say it's just a mere coincidence, but FOX resurrected Last Man Standing, which is a very conservative show that ABC cancelled last year, so I just can't think it's not a coincidence that all the shows (some that were doing quite well, too, iirc) that had LGBT characters were brutally axed and yet they suddenly revived a show that already had already been cancelled for months.

I kind of prefer fandoms where there won't be a new season/film/book because it means they can never go in a direction I don't like

I honestly wish I could be like this, because it would make things so much simpler. But I'm a sucker for wanting more of the story, and sometimes the direction does go into interesting and fascinating places, but a lot of the times it doesn't and often leaves me (and most other fans) disappointed. But I think cancellations hurt so much in general because we often wonder the what could have been, since most shows end up getting the axe before they even got to show their true potential.

Siren getting picked up for another season encourages me to give it a shot!

I went into the show with very little expectations, so because of this I've been enjoying it so far. I don't know how it'll do in the long run, but it has a good start. I definitely would give it a shot and see if it's something you'd like. :)

I am so happy about Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! This season was so good! I am also glad to hear they wrote a finale that could act as a series finale. I like that! I don’t need another cliffhanger... :)

Date: 2018-05-18 04:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
I really dislike it when shows end their seasons on cliffhangers, since they are often unnecessary and once the next season premieres it loses all weight and it's like, oh, lol, it's all resolved quite quickly. You can tell that most cliffhangers are just there so they get enough viewership for renewal, and I find them incredibly cheap.

That being said, I definitely think Agents of SHIELD knew that they were probably either going to end soon so they prepared somewhat in advance on how they wanted the show to conclude should that have been the case, whether it would be this season or the next. I wish more shows would do this, tbh.

Date: 2018-05-18 04:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erychan86.livejournal.com
Knowing that a show will end in a cliffhanger makes it more difficult for me to tune in to watch it... I’d rather wait at that point and watch it closer to the premiere... so their tactics are actually lost on me lol

I’m so happy 2 of my shows have been renewed for their last season... (Jane the Virgin and crazy ex girlfriend) so they will have an end... CW is earning a lot of respect... at least from me!!! It gives its shows a chance to have an ending!

Date: 2018-05-19 05:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com
Well, the CW rarely cancels their shows since they don't operate the same as other networks do in regards to the traditional ratings system (unless a show has such dismal ratings that they have no choice but to cancel it). So, unless creators don't give a fuck and are willing to sell their soul for their show to go on for 20+ seasons, it allows them to end the story properly as opposed to other networks.

I have my issues with the CW and its multitude of problems, but at least that is something I cannot complain about when it comes to actual good shows having a good run and the creators having the chance to end their show the way they want to.

They were both surprise renewals because I was for sure that they would be ending after their current seasons, since usually when shows end up getting around their five or sixth season marks it pretty much is an indicator that they are probably going to end at some point down the line. So it was a pleasant surprise to hear that they both got renewed.
