I'm five by five.
Apr. 1st, 2017 06:29 am++ In the continuing celebration of the 20th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was a cast reunion for EW that included a photoshoot and interviews. If you weren't already feeling nostalgic, this would've definitely have taken the cake by seeing everyone together again and just reflecting on the show and its legacy. However, I have to say that Eliza Dushku's absence from the reunion is pretty glaring. It was revealed that she wasn't invited to this event, the claim being that it's because she wasn't a series regular. But I find that strange since there are those who attended who weren't regulars either. I can understand when someone is not able to attend due to unavailability, but to basically have never been invited is a completely different thing. Faith may not have been a regular but she was a damn important character to the show, and beloved by fans, and Eliza has always shown her love and support of the show and the fandom. So this doesn't make any kind of sense that she just wasn't invited simply because she wasn't a "series regular." I'm also sad that Anthony Stewart Head couldn't make it, either. It wouldn't have been a Scooby Gang reunion without Giles present.
++ With that being said however, hearing that not only has Bull been renewed for a second season but also that Eliza Dushku has been cast as a major role makes me incredibly happy. I've been enjoying this little show quite a bit, so I'm more than excited that she'll be a part of it.
++ Joss Whedon has been announced to direct a Batgirl movie. I, for one, am intrigued and excited by this prospect as I still enjoy most his work and I'm curious on how this will be done.
++ And finally we have the teaser trailer for the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's IT. I'm half apprehensive and half cautiously optimistic about this. I have a fondness for the 90s television miniseries, it was creepy in its own right and had a great cast line-up including the iconic performance by Tim Curry as Pennywise, but I know that the miniseries was limited to what it was able to do during that time. This is less of a remake of that and more of a fresh adaptation of the classic horror novel itself, and just judging from this teaser alone I'm intrigued. It's been a while since I've reread the book, but I have to tell you, there are some pretty legit creepy things that happen in it, along with some bizarre and questionable content, so it makes me curious as to what makes it into this version and how far they might want to push the envelope.
Furthermore, apparently this will be split into two films, this first part will feature the kids, while the second will be with them as adults. I know many have been getting tired with this continuing trend of movies being split into two or more parts, however for something like IT this makes perfect sense. Both the book and the story is just too grand to be contained in a singular film. The miniseries did this by having their first part interweaving them as adults with flashbacks to what happened during their youth, with the second part solely focusing on them as adults. So this is also something I'm curious about regarding the narrative and direction.

Date: 2017-04-01 01:38 pm (UTC)I didn't know Eliza Dushku had a new show! Good for her. I don't even really know what she's done post-Dollhouse. I feel like she may have been a semi-regular on another show, but I'm not really sure whether that's correct? You might know better than me, you seem to be pretty up on this stuff. :)

Date: 2017-04-02 03:44 am (UTC)I'm definitely curious about Batgirl, and how he's going from MCU to DC, though I'll be honest I kinda want to see something from his own creation in the future instead of playing in other people's sandboxes.

I'm tentatively interested in a Batgirl movie.

Date: 2017-04-01 09:09 pm (UTC)The EW spread gave me a lot of feels, but yeah, I thought they made some interesting choices. And Eliza Dushku should be photographed as often as possible. I missed her in the pictures.

Date: 2017-04-02 12:44 am (UTC)Regardless how you feel about the characters or pairings, Willow/Tara were, and still are, incredibly important to the LGBT community. So it's understandable that they would be placed together for the photoshoot and talk specifically about that relationship and how powerful of an impact it was and continues to make.

Date: 2017-04-02 09:53 pm (UTC)Willow isn't bisexual. She's a lesbian.
it felt like Tara was more or less just a sort of conduit for Willow rather than her own character.
I beg to differ, especially considering the episode "Family" where we see a lot more of her character, and Tara herself grew out of her shell and became stronger because of it (which make me really despise Willow in the later seasons because of her treatment of Tara, esp in the sixth season knowing that Tara was a victim of abuse and yet continued to do the things she did.) I know that you don't like Tara and that's fine, but Tara is someone who I will always defend because she was an important character to me and I believe she deserved better.

Date: 2017-04-03 11:24 pm (UTC)Just because she wasn't interested in women before meeting Tara doesn't invalidate her sexuality, nor does her being a lesbian invalidate her previous relationship with Oz. There are many people who don't discover their sexuality until later in life, as there are plenty of examples of lesbians who had relationships with the opposite gender before realizing that they were, in fact, gay themselves (and vice versa). Willow was discovering herself in the fourth season, so her comment about it just being Tara was her not wanting to label herself at that time because of her newfound feelings, which is perfectly fine. She needed time to understand what she was feeling. It wasn't until the fifth season where she finally accepted her sexuality.
Also, since you haven't seen the rest of the show, Willow has had other relationships and expressed her attraction to other women, this also includes in the BTVS comics as well, and as far as I know she has shown no attraction towards men since her relationship with Oz.

Date: 2017-04-02 10:57 am (UTC)(If you haven't check out the 1990 miniseries of IT, I do highly recommend it, because it is quite iconic and features a fantastic cast, which also includes Seth Green!)
When I heard about the reunion shoot/interviews for EW I was hoping that Eliza would be there, and was incredibly disappointed when she wasn't and further devastated when I saw that she wasn't invited at all. :(

Date: 2017-04-02 05:44 pm (UTC)I am having all of the BtVS nostalgia and need all 4 EW covers despite the missing actors. I'm also going to have to get around to watching Bull.
I want to reread It. I'm not sure if I can watch the film in theaters as it looks terrifying but I do want to watch it eventually. I think you're right about the split. It's a long story, splitting it helps tell it better and splitting it in a way that adds to the story could be really interesting.

Date: 2017-04-02 10:55 pm (UTC)Bull is really great! It's a fun procedural and I'm so happy that she'll be in it next season. :)
I'm definitely going to go see it in theaters. I'm debating going alone or taking someone with me, the latter is more difficult because not many people I know love horror as much as I do, at least enough to see it in theaters.

Date: 2017-04-03 08:07 am (UTC)I'm interested in seeing IT as well. I think having the film split in to two films in the best idea, because you get the aspect of both childhood and adult, like you mentioned. It'll be nice to see what they plan on doing in the long wrong.
I also seem to enjoy Joss's stuff so I have hopes for Batgirl and that it'll actually be good :)

Date: 2017-04-03 09:30 am (UTC)Being someone who loves horror, I'm definitely curious to see how this adaptation takes it on and how it'll contrast with the miniseries by doing what it wasn't able to do back then.

Date: 2017-04-04 12:33 pm (UTC)And I'm also really looking forward to the IT film, Stephen King has said himself that he really loved it and thinks that book fans won't be disappointed by it :D

Date: 2017-04-04 11:52 pm (UTC)Exactly. Like, regardless from being Alyson's husband which might've granted him a pass, it still doesn't make sense considering that Wesley wasn't a huge influential character on BTVS as much as someone like Faith was. Let's also take into account that Faith is included in the new merchandise that'll be released soon (her leather jacket of the Hot Topic exclusive line), it doesn't matter how many episodes she was in. She did make a huge impact on the show and the audience. So excluding her is kinda painful. I mean, ngl I am bias because she is my favorite character and I love Eliza so much, but the fact that she wasn't even invited at all is rather heartbreaking.
If they couldn't have that many people, I understand, but then why have Wesley there and not Faith? Why didn't they extend the invitation to Eliza? Idk, it's just so weird, and I know that we're probably making a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be, but still. It bothers me a bit.
and personally I would have liked to have seen Drusilla as well
Same here! Hell, I would've loved for there to have been a returning of the antagonists for their own separate spread, like the Big Bads throughout the seasons, like not just Drusilla but also Glory and so on. Just bring in as many people as possible for a reunion photoshoot. Perhaps that might've been too big for EW, but dammit if you're gonna do a twenty year anniversary you got to go big or go home, imho.

Date: 2017-04-05 05:56 pm (UTC)Sadly I don't think so, because otherwise she would've simply said it was due to a scheduling conflict. ASH mentioned he couldn't do the reunion because he's doing a play in London, so if she had other commitments that would've been a valid enough reason and there wouldn't be this much commotion. But no, she was straightforward in admitting that she just wasn't invited. I'm trying not to be too bitter about this because I'm sure there will be other opportunities for reunions and get-togethers with the cast (as there always is), but it's still disappointing that EW didn't even bother extending the invite. :(
I mean, the reunion photoshoot/interviews was lovely and nice and brought all the nostalgia of course, seeing all of them together again (and how timeless Charisma Carpenter is, omg), I just wish Eliza could've been there.
