We're not too cool to dance...
Jan. 28th, 2015 08:40 pm++ Rutina Wesley has joined Hannibal. Most will know her as Tara from True Blood, and here she will play opposite of Richard Armitage's Francis Dolarhyde in the third season as Reba McClane, his blind love interest. So far the casting for S3 has been exceptional. I wasn't much of a True Blood watcher but I have seen her scenes (since Tara and Layfayette were the only characters I cared about, tbh) and I very much enjoyed her performance there, so I'm particularly intrigued with this particular role and how she and Richard are going to play their scenes together.
++ So incredibly happy that Orange Is The New Black and How To Get Away With Murder won at the SAG awards the other night, and the fact that both Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis won, both giving amazingly beautiful and powerful acceptance speeches, proves how much better it was in comparison to the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations. Just the acknowledgement that stories about minorities, stories about women, stories written by women for women, this kind of representation matters and is important to show recognition for.
++ Even though they're on hiatus at the moment, I'm sort of pausing my watch of Lost Girl until after the show ends to see where it all goes. As of right now I'm not particularly liking what they're doing, especially in terms of character relationships. In general they've been rather lackluster with how they've been treating this season, almost like it's not the last season at all. The slow pacing, main characters exiting while new ones are introduced with no relevance or contribution to the plot thus far. I don't know, it's confusing to me. I'm also going to be catching up with Pretty Little Liars and with Agent Carter, the latter in which I'm hoping gets renewed because it deserves it. Galavant was amazing as usual, sad that it's over though. I haven't been keeping up with Sleepy Hollow and with the disappointment it's been this season I don't expect to be rushing anytime soon. At least there is some acknowledgement about its decline, from the audience and critics to even the actors, which I hope the direction of the show gets corrected soon, otherwise it'll be yet another wasted potential show that started off good but turned into an unwatchable trainwreck.

I hope Agent Carter gets renewed. I think it will. Marvel and Disney have ABC by the balls hence why Agents of SHIELD is most likely to be renwed.

Date: 2015-01-29 07:45 am (UTC)I've seen some worries about the ratings of Agent Carter, and the concerns on what it means about having a female-fronted show of the Marvel franchise. Honestly, I wish we didn't have to rely on getting good enough ratings in order to prove that hey, women can carry a show by themselves.

Date: 2015-01-29 08:10 am (UTC)I haven't seen Lost Girl yet but everything I've read about this season has me less interested in watching it. Sure, it's better than season 4 but it would've actually been hard to be WORSE given how awful season 4 was. But yeah...I've heard this season has the same pacing issues and the fact that they're introducing new characters in the last season just annoys me. Why not focus on the existing characters?!
This week's episode of Sleepy Hollow was actually pretty solid. Not season 1 level, but much better than the season 2 average. But that doesn't mean they'll keep it up. Next week could be completely awful again.

Date: 2015-01-29 10:57 am (UTC)Pretty much. I would've thought that, this being the last season, they would have wanted to have a singular focus on the main plot rather than lag on like they've done before. Like, okay this is the final season of the series and of Bo's story, gotta make every episode count, shit is going down. Unfortunately with the way things have been going I feel like we're still going to undergo all the same previous shit, and nothing serious is gonna happen until the last few episodes where they cram everything in as fast as they can. And honestly, I have no idea what happened, since I thought they used to do better than this. Maybe the central plot got too big for them to handle? If so, why add more things into the mix? Idk.
But that doesn't mean they'll keep it up. Next week could be completely awful again.
Unless the writers really start taking the criticisms of the show to heart, I doubt it'll be kept up. They say they're going to change things from how they've been, but who knows when that'll take affect.

Date: 2015-01-29 01:24 pm (UTC)I'm realizing now that Lost Girl should have probably ended some while ago, or at least gone in a different direction because last season was a bust and it seems to be happening again for this season (sadly with it being their last). I have loved it for what it was and could forgive some of the ridiculous storylines and subplots that happened here and there, and overall I have enjoyed the Fae lore and the found family aspect which is my ultimate weakness, but I think they got too big with their plot ideas which kind of took over everything else (kind of ironic seeing as how they don't really deal with it seriously until the last few episodes of a season). Like, at this point I don't really care about Bo's father, where she came from, her supposed destiny arc, etc. I just wanted her and Kenzi being partners in crime and getting into wacky Fae shenanigans.

Date: 2015-01-29 03:15 pm (UTC)I need to start watching Orange is the New Black. Along with a number of other things. There's so much interesting TV on right now, like even when certain seasons are weak, there's still so much else to choose from. It's a good time to be a fangirl. 8)

Date: 2015-01-30 11:02 am (UTC)Yeah, I don't know either. Not that there aren't ways of telling the story differently once they've gotten to that point, but it all depends on how they deal with it, which from the evidence of how they've been handling with things so far is not very comforting.
It's a good time to be a fangirl. 8)
It truly is. It's just really fascinating to think that several years ago we didn't have all these different options with our television watching at our finger tips.

Date: 2015-01-30 06:16 am (UTC)Re: Lost Girl: when it comes down to it, I don't really think the writers are very good at telling stories, lol. Even the first few seasons were nonsensical when you stripped it all down. But they were campy and fun, so who cared. But now that they're trying to up the stakes, the subpar writing really shows. Sure, it's season 5, let's bring in new characters! And finally we get her father, but I wish this whole thing with him had been introduced a lot sooner. I fear we're not going to get much follow through on it. Not to mention Bo's dull as dishwater love triangle and who she's going to choose. I never liked Lauren, really. I just can't find anything interesting about her character, so I'm miffed as to why Bo is so taken with her.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it too. The earlier seasons did have a more simplistic angle to them, since it was mainly about this young woman who didn't know what she was and where she belonged and along her journey of self-discovery she found her own version of family. That is basically my weakness in any kind of story, plus meshing with the lighthearted campy entertainment is what made it so charming. Again, it's what reminded me of BTVS in many ways. It had the mythos and lore of the Fae, it had the character connections, the found-family aspect. Obviously they had to progress the story and that's just natural considering, but it didn't attempt to be something bigger or grander than what it. It just was what it was and I loved it for that.
But it seems like the last couple of seasons tried to become much bigger than it is and thus got more complicated and confusing, and it's weird since they don't really treat it as such until the last few episodes where they just cram information in to deal with it all.
I fear we're not going to get much follow through on it.
Yeah, same. I feel like there's too much that should have been introduced earlier, and things that started out should have had better execution (the whole Wanderer mislead was such bullshit), and with all the new stuff being introduced there is no way that there's going to be a proper follow through.
Not to mention Bo's dull as dishwater love triangle and who she's going to choose. I never liked Lauren, really. I just can't find anything interesting about her character, so I'm miffed as to why Bo is so taken with her.
SAME, OMG. I can't believe they're pulling this love triangle again, now of all times. I'm tired of this being the only thing writers go to when they need something ~dramatic to happen. We already dealt with this nonsense when it was Lauren vs. Dyson in the earlier seasons, it was bullshit then and it's bullshit now. And ITA about Lauren, as a character I found her bland and not really fleshed out enough because they kept focusing on her being the love interest for Bo instead of her own person. As far as that relationship goes, I never understood it. There's no chemistry between them, and the way Lauren has treated Bo has pissed me off on numerous occasions. And now they're playing the "endgame" card when in reality Bo should really be in a polyamorous relationship and just, ugh.

Date: 2015-01-31 04:48 am (UTC)Random: And then we have Lauren having turned Evony human, which I always thought was weird and shouldn't be able to be done.
And I'm also going to moan about the Kenzi-less season. From a story POV, she said she couldn't just be the 'human' anymore, but Lauren is human. So Lauren is a doctor, it's not like Kenzi has nothing to offer. Oh, and what about that whole shadow thief thing? But I guess that doesn't make her special either.
And what do we think happened to Tamsin at the end of last episode?
no subject
Date: 2015-01-31 09:30 am (UTC)Exactly. And this is just a general pet peeve of mine that happens all the time where a character continues to go back and forth between two previous relationships (often times with competing for their affections) in hopes of appeasing particular fans. Like, I know on-again/off-again relationships do happen in real life, but this trope is ridiculously and unnecessarily excessive in fiction. Certain relationships aren't meant to be revisited or to be considered as an endgame. Just enjoy the time they had together, and when it's over allow them to move on in peace. Whether it's to someone new or to nobody in particular and just let them be, you know?
And then we have Lauren having turned Evony human, which I always thought was weird and shouldn't be able to be done.
I'm still not understanding this subplot, because they're being rather nonchalant over something that is completely life-changing for the entirety of the Fae community. Also, never mind how it all happened is completely gross because Lauren turned Evony human through dubious means of sexual contact, and the fact it's not even addressed disturbs me so much. It adds more of me not liking Lauren, since this isn't the first time she's done something like this.
Also, why do I get the feeling this entire thing may be leading to Lauren turning herself into a milder version of a half-Fae so she and Bo could be together? Because if that's the case, I'm out.
And I'm also going to moan about the Kenzi-less season. From a story POV, she said she couldn't just be the 'human' anymore, but Lauren is human.
Yeah, I'm not really understanding this kind of explanation either. Because I could understand Kenzi wanting some time for herself after everything that has happened, needing some space away from all the craziness, but it makes it seem like Kenzi needed to get away for all things Fae when...Fae is everywhere? It's not like she can escape from it. Also, I never understood what shadow thieving was since we never really saw it in action or how Kenzi benefited from this kind of training.
I felt like they needed an excuse for Kenzi to be away because Ksenia doing other projects (which I'm still scratching my head about), but even with that explanation they're acting like Bo has lost Kenzi again when in reality they could still contact each other? I just don't understand.
And what do we think happened to Tamsin at the end of last episode?
I have no idea. I don't know what they're doing and it's why I'm waiting until the season/show is over to figure out what the hell is happening.

Please no.
but it makes it seem like Kenzi needed to get away for all things Fae when...Fae is everywhere?
This is my major gripe when any human character says they can't be with a supernatural character (romantically or platonically), because the supernatural is everywhere and you can't just leave it behind once you know about it. Or rather, it won't leave you alone just because you try to get away from it. See also: Dean erasing Lisa's memories like that was going to protect her or something.
no subject
Date: 2015-02-03 03:25 pm (UTC)It really isn't, and the more I think about it the more it seems that the whole romance drama is only done to distract us from the lack of an actual plot that is happening on the show. Bleh.
Or rather, it won't leave you alone just because you try to get away from it.
Exactly. I get feeling claustrophobic and needing space for whatever reason, but you can't just revert to being oblivious to everything around you when you start that new chapter in your life. It's like when Buffy tried running away from Sunnydale. She had personal reasons for leaving and wanting to get away from her problems, but that world doesn't go away just because she wants it to. She tried denying it, tried to ignore it, but it always catches up with her one way or another. To discard that reality is kind of, well, unrealistic when you're dealing with supernatural elements that are everywhere. And sometimes that is the point, like in Buffy's case, but other times it's just pointless and illogical.

Date: 2015-01-30 02:38 pm (UTC)Well, I'm happy that at least you're enjoying the season. I was at first but I'm finding I'm disliking about the way they're handling certain things, especially if this is their last season and all. It's not what I expected, that's all. I know that despite being in less episodes this season Kenzi will definitely be returning, probably more towards the end of the season to close out the series.

Date: 2015-02-03 03:42 am (UTC)Sleepy Hollow...well. It's still weird? It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't really gotten back into its stride yet either and is in that weird limbo space. I'm not sure of how they're going to try to fix the wreck of S2, or enough to climb back out of its hole.
I'm not willing to get my hopes up for a renewal for Agent Carter, mostly because it is Marvel, ratings are lackluster (???) and there still isn't a Black Widow movie even planned yet. Not to say I'm not hoping, but it seems the odds are against it.
I think the fundamental problem with Lost Girl is that it's biggest weakness is that the writers aren't very good. Or they don't know how to write a story that actually makes sense and doesn't try to bite off more than it needs. Or something like that. Basically, bad plotting.

Date: 2015-02-03 09:02 am (UTC)I feel like they just really need to start anew. Attempting to fix the damage might only make it worse. We'll have to see what happens.

ABC has defended and backed the show despite the ratings issue, so at least there is some level of support on their end.
As for Black Widow, I really want there to be a movie franchise for her, but the likelihood of that happening seems less and less as time passes. At least we're going to be getting Captain Marvel, so that's something at least. But the fact they haven't even considered giving a known female superhero of the MCU her own film is indeed very troubling. I mean, I know that Agent Carter is going to introduce the Black Widow Program to coincide with Age of Ultron, but what better way of needing an actual Natasha-centric film to show her own origin story. I mean, it's such a no-brainer, honestly.

Sadly, I agree. It's become more apparent as the seasons progressed that they really can't do anything worthwhile in regards to plot. It's their blind spot. They have ideas about what to do, but they just don't know how to do it, hence why everything is always so crammed towards the last few episodes of a season and that there's no build-up to anything (Rainer, for example, was horribly introduced and that whole relationship came out of left-field, we still don't understand his entire purpose as a character and it just ruined the entire Wanderer mystery that should have been epic from the way it was being portrayed, yet the ending result fell incredibly flat). They think bigger than they actually can produce, and therein lies the weakness of the show that brings everything down with it, unfortunately.
I much prefer the simpler storylines, where there is a central plot but it's not overbearing or complicated. I wanted more of Bo discovering herself and of her family, both biological and found, but I didn't need this "chosen one" storyline which kind of defeats the purpose of what the central message was from the beginning. I mean, before Bo had that intro monologue where she says, "I will live the life I choose", and for some reason they don't have that intro anymore. As if that doesn't matter anymore.
There are some shows that don't need a larger than life way to end a series, and Lost Girl was one of them. But they got too big with their thinking and overestimated how much they can do, and I feel that the show is going to end on a disappointing note than an uplifting one.

Date: 2015-02-08 08:36 pm (UTC)I don't watch award shows usually but I am happy to hear about the wins at the SAG awards. Excellent shows with excellent casts!
LG is falling apart this season even more. I would have thought that knowing it was the last one would have given the writers reason to really put together a great ending. It feels like they just picked a big topic which doesn't really fit with the usual fae lore anyway and are being lazy otherwise. The episodes barely have continuity within themselves let alone carrying a plot week to week. It's really disappointing.
