President Obama endorses marriage equality
May. 9th, 2012 04:32 pmBarack Obama: "I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."
While it isn't news that Obama has been for gay rights, this is the first time a United States President has announced publicly in favor of marriage equality.
Four for you, Obama. ♥

Date: 2012-05-11 05:38 am (UTC)What's interesting to me is how there are some people out there being cynical going, "well then what's he gonna do about it?" He announced of his support of marriage equality, that's pretty damn impressive especially since no other American President has done that in political history. As for "doing something about it", iirc a President can't enforce something like this. He can make his stance known on these issues, what he wishes for the American people, but at the end of the day it's up to the states or enforce or revoke particular laws (even though civil rights shouldn't be voted on in the first place, and it's sad that this is still being debated in this day and age.)
