President Obama endorses marriage equality

Barack Obama: "I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

While it isn't news that Obama has been for gay rights, this is the first time a United States President has announced publicly in favor of marriage equality.

Four for you, Obama. ♥

Finally. I wish he'd done it sooner, but better late than never I guess. Although, I have a feeling some of this is political, particularly the timing and why he waited until now and why he finally said it.

At this point in time, anything he said or did will be seen for political purposes. Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't. Regardless, I am happy that he said it, especially since his support of gay rights backs up his announcement entirely. So he's not just saying it for the sake of saying it for such political reasons.

Would have been nice if he had done it before yesterday's NC vote- but most were betting on after the election. Not like he had the bigot's votes anyhow. =)

I'm so pissed about North Carolina. But it wouldn't have mattered if he announced this before or after, the bigots would've still voted the way they did anyway regardless.

What's interesting to me is how there are some people out there being cynical going, "well then what's he gonna do about it?" He announced of his support of marriage equality, that's pretty damn impressive especially since no other American President has done that in political history. As for "doing something about it", iirc a President can't enforce something like this. He can make his stance known on these issues, what he wishes for the American people, but at the end of the day it's up to the states or enforce or revoke particular laws (even though civil rights shouldn't be voted on in the first place, and it's sad that this is still being debated in this day and age.)

I am glad that President Obama came out in support of gay marriage. I do myself support gay marriage and think they should have same rights as everyone does.

For me, unless one is being married to a child or there's coercion or abuse involved, who someone marries is nobody's fucking business. Everyone deserves the right to love, everyone deserves the right to want to make the decision on getting married or not regardless of their sexual orientation.
