30 Days of Supernatural: Day Seventeen
Feb. 6th, 2011 11:05 amDay 17 - Your favorite SPN friendship

Dean and Castiel
I think their friendship is, by far, something to be highly valued since without it, they wouldn't be where they are today.
Season four was particularly a dark season where startling revelations were unveiled and boundaries of trust were broken. The Winchesters were going in their separate directions, Dean being concerned with feeling betrayed by his brother and dealing with something bigger on his shoulders, and Castiel had begun questioning Heaven's true intentions leading to much doubt and being torn between doing what is right versus being obedient to his brethren. Both at a crossroads and unable to deal, they confided in each other. This went deeper than just Castiel being the one who pulled Dean out from Hell; it definitely turned into a profound bond because they gradually started to trust each other, something that neither of them had done before in their entire existence with another being. They both came together at a time when they really needed it most, when nobody else would listen or understand what they were going through.
I think the best scene to really describe it is the end of "It's The Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester", with Dean and Castiel sitting on the park benches and talking. It wasn't a business transaction, but rather than actually having a casual conversation and being comfortable with each other. Dean makes a joke, Castiel actually laughs at it. Dean listens to Castiel when he confides with something he can't tell to rest of the angels in Heaven, and Castiel talks about his compassion for humanity, and that he really cares for Dean. It was the beginning of everything between them.
Honestly, I think the fourth season really was the best season to see the growth of their friendship and companionship between Dean and Castiel and what they go through together since, essentially, they ultimately do mirror each other in the situations they are in and they complete each other in the process. They understand each other, hell they don't even have to speak words most of the time. Castiel understands Dean better than anyone else and has much compassion and understanding for him, he also doesn't take much bullshit from him either, and Dean learns to appreciate this kind of bond between them as well ("Don't ever change"; "Learned that from my friend Cas, you son of a bitch!") plus it was his final push in "Lucifer Rising" that finally persuaded Castiel to rebel against Heaven in order to do the right thing, something that he would have never done had he never met or crossed paths with him. That kind of bond and friendship is rather remarkable, in my opinion.
I think it's fair to say that there hasn't been a friendship like this for any of the characters on Supernatural, it's undeniable of their unique profound bond they have together. I just wish the actual show would acknowledge it more often these days....

Date: 2011-02-07 01:20 am (UTC)I loved the connectivity of the first two seasons, but S4 had that built-in mythology and storytelling that brought everything together and it was so well-constructed, it's definitely one of the best seasons the show has had for sure. It makes me wonder what happened?

Date: 2011-02-07 02:59 am (UTC)I WANT THAT PROFOUND BOND AGAIN. I WANT THEIR PRECIOUS FRIENDSHIP, NO MATTER HOW STRANGE OR AWKWARD IT HAD BEEN, TO BE FEATURED ON THE SHOW AGAIN. IT'S WHAT STARTED EVERYTHING, IT'S HOW CASTIEL BECAME A VITAL PART OF THE SHOW, IT'S WHY FANS LOVE HIM/THEM SO MUCH. WHY NEGLECT IT FROM US SHOW, WHYYYYY? D: D: D: D:
THERE'S NO REASON WHY DEAN SHOULD BE AN ABSOLUTE JERKOFF. THERE IS NO REASON WHY CASTIEL WOULD ATTEMPT TO TRY AND HUG SAM FIRST INSTEAD OF HIS DEAN, AKA HIS BFF FOR THE LONGEST TIME. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THIS KIND OF FUCKERY.
GET THE CHARACTERIZATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS RIGHT SHOW, DAMN IT.

Date: 2011-02-07 02:21 am (UTC)You know, someone else said that Dean and Castiel don't ever seem to be written as ANYTHING but antagonistic towards each other this season. And that it's only the chemistry between the way Jensen and Misha act it that gives any impression that Dean and Castiel care about each other at all. But it doesn't seem to be there in the text. Not like it has been before. Not like it was even in S4, when they were on "opposite" sides half the time.

Date: 2011-02-07 02:53 am (UTC)See, it's stuff like that which pisses me off, since they seemed to be more comfortable and at ease with each other with their bonding and shit back then then they are now when they're on the same side of things. I just, I don't understand, and I hate how it's been written and handled. But this entire season has been mistreated and sucking ass with failed characterization and badly executed storylines. :(
I want their profound bond back, I want them to be budding together again, epic moments with helping each other out and some sort of acknowledgment that they have a friendship, you know? I mean even when Dean was being a jerkoff in 5.18 there was definitely that chemistry and hurt clearly between him and Castiel. Why can't they do it this season, and why is Sera Gamble blatantly ignoring this important factor in their relationship? Has she forgotten the main reason why Castiel is with them is because of Dean? Seriously.
I miss their adorable friendship moments. 12 episodes in and minimal scenes together for anything. Just, wtf.

Date: 2011-02-07 02:44 am (UTC)I would like to have the writers from S4 back again.
Fucking word to that. :( I want more of the Dean/Cas moments. The thing is, people assume that Dean/Cas scenes take away from the brothers and that's simply not true. They can be Team Free Will and still have those little moments between them, you know.

This. That moment is one of my favorite, because it's so quiet and honest. It didn't need to be about gore or melodrama; it was just this great character moment that gave us this lovely insight into Cas, and moreover, gave Dean a lovely insight into Cas.

Exactly, it's just a lovely moment between the two and this really says a lot without saying much at all. Even when Castiel says that he has doubts and questions, you know he's been struggling and continues to struggle with this and that him confiding in Dean is really important and big. It just says a lot about the shift between them and how their bonding moment will definitely be an important factor as the season continues.
I JUST LOVE THEM OKAY? <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
