rogueslayer452Caprica premiered last Friday, the two-hour pilot which had been slightly edited to fit appropriately for televising. There were some altered scenes, including the newly improved Pyramid stadium scene which I don't recall seeing on the extended version. Otherwise, it was still the same. And I loved it all. For those of you who are curious, I had already written my review of the mini-movie/pilot way back when the DVD came out. Even though it's been months since then, all my opinions have stayed pretty much the same. Just waiting for new material to start flooding in, and if the previews live up to the hype, we're in for some fascinating stuff this season.
With that, I would like to direct everyone to this fantastic interview with Jane Espenson regarding Caprica, discussing what we'll be expecting to come in the season. It is somewhat spoilery since it does focus a great deal on a particular character and their sexual identity, but I definitely recommend reading it to everyone because it does go on about how said sexuality will be presented on the show, of how they are creating this culture, about characters and their relationships and more specifically, about the writing and detailing everything on the show. Really, I thought about quoting a lot from this interview, but I'm just going to advise you to read it all. It's incredible and it makes me truly appreciate Jane Espenson a lot more than I already did, because that's what I love about her. She gets it, not just as a writer but also as part of the audience and being a fan.
Same-sex relationships, group marriages, monotheistic versus polytheistic views, heavily complex characters and their moralities examined and challenged, the unconventional being completely culturally acceptable in this universe, plus, the evolution (and abuse) of technology which creates the Cylons amongst colonies, thus bringing forth our own destruction. And people wonder why I adore these kinds of shows.

Alessandra Torresani interview, pretty much explaining her role on the series as Zoe Graystone, among other things. I pretty much kinda adore Alessandra. I know some will think that she's kinda spastic, but she's doing quite well and I think, judging from her interviews and video blogs that she's done, I would totally want to be bffs with her in real life, especially since she's my age.
Now here's a question: WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE SEEING STONEHENGE APOCALYPSE PREVIEWS?! IT IS 2010, BRING ON THE MISH MISH AND THE BAD SCIFI MOVIES!

Date: 2010-01-25 07:32 pm (UTC)Of course the pilot only sets up for what's to come, if I'm reading the interviews correctly we're going to be going into the lifestyles of these characters and how they live and deal from the next new episode this Friday and onward. I think this is going awesome, because judging from how Jane Espenson explains it in the interview, it's all part of the Caprican culture, things will be challenged like the religious aspects and dealing with terrorism and such, but as Jane mentions gender and orientation they hardly blink an eye. It's completely natural in their culture, and I like that they're going to be playing on that instead of making it for the "shock value" that some shows have done.

Date: 2010-01-25 07:15 pm (UTC)You've made me even more excited about Caprica, and that's saying a lot. ;D I finally sat down and watched my Caprica dvd this past weekend because I didn't want to get behind now that the series has started, and I was blown away. And was hitting myself for waiting so long to watch it. I think this show is going to own me just like BSG did, if not more.
And thanks for posting that great Jane Espenson interview. I love her.

Date: 2010-01-25 07:35 pm (UTC)BSG will always remain top-notch television, perhaps the best television series ever, but Caprica holds much promise and potential because it is following the similar themes, being an extension to the BSG mythology and universe. The pilot itself drew me in immediately, and with these previews and interviews giving us a taste of what is to come, I seriously cannot wait and am craving for more. SCIFI FRIDAY IS BACK BB! :D
Yes, Jane Espenson is simply amazing. I love how eloquent she is when explaining things, and she makes sense and understands what she's doing in her craft and how television works. She's just so, so awesome. ♥
