Just my thoughts.
Jan. 22nd, 2010 04:04 amSo, it's been confirmed. Supernatural will be getting a sixth season. I've kinda already stated my opinions before about my feelings about having another season added to the five year plan and such. Again, I know nothing about what's going to be planned here on out, so here's what I'm wishing and praying for:
And that's that. I worry because I care, okay people? Supernatural is pretty much my main fandom at the moment and I don't want the story to lose its finesse towards the end simply because they added another season.
01. Continue with the Apocalypse mytharc from this season, extending it into the sixth season, since honestly I can't see anything topping the Apocalypse which is a huge factor into what has been built on the entire show, and it's pretty much the Big Bang that Kripke has talked about numerous of times. So more with the mythology, less with the monster of the weeks. That's pretty much it. I'm not entirely picky, but I have to say my interest with Supernatural perked up more once the introduction with the angel mythology and tying everything together with the Apocalypse and the like, the fact they amped it up with the mythology is much more fascinating than normal monster hunting cases. I mean gotta love our boys, but Supernatural is not a procedural kind of show; it's driven by heavy-arc storylines which have been woven throughout the seasons. I would much rather have the show go out with a huge big bang like ending the Apocalypse then going downhill like some shows have done in the past by adding another season just to add another season, you know?
02. Keep Misha Collins as a regular.with plenty more Dean/Castiel sexytiems

Date: 2010-01-22 06:34 pm (UTC)And I don't know how I feel about stretching out the storyline for another season. Obviously, you can't beat the apocalypse so if there is another season, they kinda have to stretch it out.
That said, it means we're going to get a lot more stand-alones instead of a big arc to finish off the series.
So...I'm torn at this point. I'll see what they do with the rest of this season before I make my decision but a big part of me thinks they just should've stuck with the original plan and ended it this year.

Date: 2010-01-22 11:52 pm (UTC)But I definitely agree in regards to stand-alones, which seem to be rather pointless now because they have something bigger and larger on their shoulders to worry about than your standard run-of-the-mill hunting gigs that they used to do. They should be worrying about Lucifer's next big step, about regrouping and making plans of action because the APOCALYPSE IS HERE. I get having lighthearted and funny episodes, but it should be more entwined with the heavier arcs we're dealing with, like with "Changing Channels" for instance. Something that is funny but dealing with the larger picture.
I mean, I should be happy right? Another season, whoo-hoo awesome! But on the other hand, Kripke had a solid plan where he wanted the show to be going and where he wanted it to end. Granted he might end up extending the arc a bit more in case he wants to add something else, or there won't be enough time to wrap everything up, but somehow I can't shake the feeling this was a pressured move by the network to keep the show on the air for their benefit. I want to believe Kripke took advantage of this to extend the story and mytharc, I really do.
We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

Date: 2010-01-23 06:06 am (UTC)And I kinda have the feeling that with the apocalypse in the rearview mirror, we'll get a one sentence reference to it in the premiere and it will never be heard of again. I mean they ignore it enough during the season that is supposed to feature it. And I'm thinking the only tension left for the S5 finale is does cas get killed off or return to heaven and does Bobby survive and get his legs fixed. Like I said in my ranty post, the only way I see it having a chance with me is if it's about the post apocalyptic world and working to right everything with other hunters featured along the way and angels and demons still playing a part throughout instead of acting like they all just up and vanished.

Date: 2010-01-23 02:52 pm (UTC)I really really want to believe it's the former and not the latter, and that Kripke is taking this advantage to do something extra for this Apocalypse (which I should say that we should cease the stand-alones and focus more on the darker arcs, but I digress).

Date: 2010-01-23 03:13 pm (UTC)I just can't see it working out that way, reverting to the first season because we've progressed beyond that, we started off in that format because we were establishing their job, what they did, but still maintaining clues to something bigger along the way. That's what's kept us going. To have a sixth season where it's like "well, we stopped the Apocalypse, let's go hunting some more!" it would be rather pointless, especially everything they've gone through. I've encountered some people that think it would be fantastic because they could explore the boys getting back to themselves post-saving the world, but honestly? They can be dealing with that now instead of giving us repetitive exposition about their issues in filler episodes, that's all I'm saying. It would be like the lackluster that was S3, and we don't want a repeat of that.
I love the show and I love the boys, but sometimes I feel like the backseat driver wanting to know what the hell the main driver is doing, you know? I really hope that Kripke doesn't follow through with those thoughts, because honestly I want the show to end with the Apocalypse. We've got everything coming together that's been setup over the seasons and for them to just end it here, but then go off to something else for only one season, well...that's just a stupid move.
I just don't know. :/ I'm worried because I do love the show and I had mad respect for Kripke with him planning five seasons and wanting no more, sticking with his creative decision and not allowing outside influences guide his main objective for the show. Then this news occurs, and I should be happy because it's another season. But it just doesn't sit right. It feels pressured and forced for some reason.
LISTEN UP KRIPKE: KEEP THE APOCALYPTIC ARC! DON'T GO BACK TO MOTW FORMAT! FIRE BAD! NO! BAD KRIPKE! ANGELS AND DEMONS AND APOCALYPSE YAY! RANDOM HUNTING IS A NO NO.

Date: 2010-01-23 10:00 pm (UTC)I think the thing that pisses me off the most about the whole thing is that is has ruined what should have been a tension filled finale where anything could happen against the biggest evil you can face and turned it meaningless cause the boys have to be a-ok to go hunt down ghosts and werewolves next season.

Date: 2010-01-25 06:34 pm (UTC)I'm hoping Kripke can pull something genius out of his bag of tricks, otherwise I fear a let down with a S6.

Date: 2010-01-25 07:44 pm (UTC)The narrative of the show is something I am gravely worried about because of this. Let's just cross our fingers and continue to pray it'll work out okay.
