Since there's been the ongoing rumors about it and although nothing is definite, here are my thoughts on the possibility of a sixth season for Supernatural:

Personally, I think this should be the show's last season. Kripke planned for five seasons in order to tell the story the way he wants, and I want him to end the show on his terms without much of outside influence of adding on, which he clearly voiced his opinion on going out on top several times. So I don't think there should be a sixth season unless, of course, it's an extension to this season's arc. Because really, how can you top the freaking Apocalypse?

But I will say, I wouldn't mind having telemovies or even webisodes afterward. Perhaps something Castiel-centric, or with "the plan" of the angels? *nudgewink*

Hell, a prequel series with the adventures of young!Mary would be kinda awesome, don'tcha think?

I agree completely. I don't want a 6th season at all, unless it isn't centered on the boys. I think their time is done. I do love them and I will miss them, but I think their story will be over at the end of this season. I would love a spin off of maybe the Ghostfacers or Castiel. Or John in the beginning or Mary when she was a hunter.

I wouldn't mind a sixth season primarily focusing on Castiel and Dean's relationship, either in a shippy or platonic sense of course. ;D

But yeah, I kinda agree with you. Although Supernatural has always been about the Winchester brothers and their family, it would just be nice to have something else be of focus, at least not strictly directed towards the boys but still tied together with the Winchester legacy, in a way. Spin-off with Bobby, or perhaps John when he was just starting out as a hunter with young!Sam and young!Dean, or more backstory on Mary and her family as hunters, etc. There are so many stories to be told that don't have to be about Dean and Sam.

Actually, I think they've handled Mary's characterization on the show quite well considering. Especially since last season learning about her background as a hunter, I think it's safe to say I trust the team as they seem to respect Mary as a character and know that everyone loves her dearly. She is Dean and Sam's mother, after all, they wouldn't dare fuck up her character. Though I wouldn't mind someone else on the writing team to add to Mary's awesome (someone like, say, Jane Espenson from the BTVS/Angel/Firefly/BSG writing teams, more specifically, ;D)

It's like with BSG that way. You don't want it to end but at the same time you understand, in terms of the story, it has to. Otherwise just having it go on and on would be rather pointless particularly with how far it's gone with the story itself. Supernatural has gotten stronger in its expanded mytharc and to have it go out with a bang would just be glorious. :D

Hm, i actually would like a 6th season and i think i even would like it if it were just stories about the boys. Cause this angel/lucifer drama is not my kind of thing. Plus, Kripke did changed his story he wanted to tell in this 5 years of his, so maybe he still can make a season 6 work with his original ideas or maybe something new.

But in terms of storytelling, having things be reverted to how season one was with just stories of the boys, how would that progress anything storyline wise? Kripke has altered things over the seasons with new ideas and making it all fit and mold together with the overall plot, but quite frankly I don't see anything past this main mytharc which ties everything together so neatly. A sixth season with something else just doesn't seem right, because this is a story with a beginning, middle and end, and the Apocalypse being that bookend of the entire arc setup since day one, I don't see how anything can go beyond that.

If there were to be a sixth season, I think it would have to be an expansion of the Apocalyptic mytharc than just random MotW episodes. Because otherwise it would just be sloppy, in my opinion.

I'm banking on either Chuck-centric or Castiel-centric. I think Chuck's crazy wacky antics with his prophetic visions leading him to become an author would be interesting to see. But I also really want to see something Castiel, like his mission of finding God. Where does he go? What does he see? Who does he see in questioning God's whereabouts? How does he use Dean's amulet?

See, these are things the show hardly mentions and should be explored.

I really, really do not want the series to be renewed in the early review if that means they'll extend the apocalypse for another year. While I really enjoy the filler eps and all (I am a huge MotW fan), I think that would drag out the negative tension too long. The way the apocalypse is set up, Dean and Sam can both put off the Final Battle simply by remaining resolute against their respective angels, and therefore the story of season 5 has necessarily been 'running away'. I don't think Show can maintain that tension for two whole seasons.

In short, I would like for Supernatural to be cancelled after this season as well: I want the actors to get the chance to move onto other projects if they wish, and I don't want the storyline to be dragged out too much. That being said, with Show edging back to the clastraphobic feeling of the first season (a very small recurring cast), I wouldn't mind an entire season of Sam&Dean MotW hijinks. If season 6 could be MotW hijinks I would watch it quite happily. What? I'm easy to please. XD;

I completely agree. Although if they were to extend the Apocalypse arc into a sixth season I don't think it would be the same-old as what we're dealing with. The recent episode pretty much told us that shit is getting real, and if anything something unexpected might happen. For example, one of my predictions if this happens is that the most likely scenario would be Sam would agree to become Lucifer's vessel, which would setup the storyline for next season of Dean trying to find loopholes in defeating Lucifer. That would be an acceptable way of expanding this season's arc, I think.

I'm the opposite of you in terms of MotW, because while they can be great at times, when comparing the to big damn End of the World stuff lately they've been kinda pointless. I think it would set the show back from how far they've come if they just do hunting episodes a la first season since really, what would be the point?

Those are my thoughts exactly. Honestly, I can't see it extending beyond the Apocalypse at this point and if there is to be another season it should only be because they need to expand the time frame of the Apocalypse (like, for instance, if this season's finale would be where Sam actually does say "yes" to Lucifer, then next season should be about Dean trying to find a way of defeating Lucifer without harming Sam and without consenting to the angels, and that would be a challenge in and of itself which would be kinda epic, imo)

But yeah, we don't need a pointless season just because fans want more Supernatural. I know we all want more, but it would be irrational just to have another season, just to have another season. Shows that do that often times will dwindle away in the spotlight, and we don't want that to happen to SPN.

There really isn't much that could be done after the apocalypse, I mean...it's the freaking apocalypse. A whole season after the apocalypse is over would be like why? lol. I'd still watch it(unless it was unbearably bad or something).

Unless they need more time to finish the story, it'd pretty much be pointless. I doubt there will be another season, I guess we'll see though lol.

Although I do trust Kripke and with his ideas, particularly since they amped everything up recently, I fear that if they just do another season without an arc post-Apocalypse, it would just be like what season three had been, which was mostly filler and no real point at all. Which would be unbearable and it wouldn't make for a great way for the show to be remembered at all.

I have doubts they'll have another season too, but with all this supposed talk I'm not so sure.

You know my feelings on this - I REALLY, REALLY DON'T WANT A 6TH SEASON. I want them to go out with a bang and on top. And like we've said, how do you top the apocalypse? You don't.

Supposedly Kripke agress that you can't top it and if we get a sixth season, he is saying that he'll go back to a more S1 thing. Which disappoints me even more. Don't get me wrong, season one was great. But the show has moved past that dynamic and it's kinda grown stale. Without the heavy arc focus, the audience was given more time to learn who Dean and Sam were, but it's been five seasons now - we have a pretty good grasp of these characters and their development. (And I gotta say with the handling of Sam's redemption arc this season, I don't have much trust in their continued character development) Without an arc to support them, I just don't have much interest in watching random MotW and the boys hijinks.

But then again I'm also the kind of person that wants this series to end messy and dark. It's the only thing that would feel right to me. I'm thinking ala the way Angel went out (I was one of the few people that loved the way it went out). I mean this is Lucifer, end of the world - I just can't buy it ending without sacrifices and a brutal battle.

And you know I'd be all over a Cas spinoff, but a young Mary one? OMG awesome.

I totally and utterly agree with you. And if he even decides to do that it would be the biggest mistake ever, because I don't want things to return to how S1 was. Not that it was horrible, like you said it was a fantastic season, but we've progressed so much with the storytelling that it would be so damper to return to what isn't necessary anymore. MotW episodes were great during that time because we only had limited information about the bigger picture, but it would be silly and pointless to return to that kind of structure when we've moved passed those.

There's a reason why I'm all "meh" about MotW episodes lately, because unless there's something incorporating it with the mytharc, they're completely boring and pointless. I'm more interested in the Apocalypse and the bigger issues the boys are dealing with and yes, like you said, without an arc furthering their story there's nothing of substance if we're going to be reverting to the S1 structure.

THIS. JUST THIS, YES ABSOLUTELY. I have this morbid way of loving my shows being all dark and gritty and not afraid of getting dirty, which is why I adored the last episode. It showed us that Supernatural is taking these risks in showing us that this IS a war, sacrifices will happen. Dark shit will happen, not everything is going to end happily ever after. The Apocalyptic arc is something I have been very excited about and I'm happy that the show is finally giving way onto just how unpredictable and the harsh reality of what they're dealing with, and like you I want my shows to be like this (hence why I parallel it to BSG so much, so much similarities to these recurring themes).

I do have my speculations that one of the brothers might not make it in the end, and I think that would be kinda a perfect ending in my opinion. Showing us that the Winchesters aren't indestructible, that they are human and can bleed and die and won't magically come back to life even with their special destinies in this bigger battle.

And you know I'd be all over a Cas spinoff, but a young Mary one? OMG awesome.

IKR! :D Either one would be awesome. It's something I really would like to see if they are to continue the series, without the boys but having something in connection with them, like with Mary or John or Bobby or Castiel. That would be sweet.

I, too, would LOVE a series/webseries with young!Mary as a hunter. I highly doubt we'll get one, though:( If they do a spin-off/web-series, it'll probably revolve around a more prominent character, like Castiel or Bobby. I think Chuck would be a good choice if they do webisodes.

The Apocalypse is the ending factor, and I think Kripke knew this when they introduced it last season. You can't draw that out forever, and you can't take a step background in continuing random hunts for the boys. It would get old and boring real fast, and there's no possible way of creating a new mytharc in a short amount of time. Right now things are wrapping up of what we've learned over the course of the series, and I think it's a perfect way to end the show.

Oh yes, Chuck webisodes. I have this thing about Chuck meeting the Ghostfacers or something like that, which would be lolarious if one of them had picked up the Supernatural books or something, lol.

Pretty much, especially since this mytharc is tying in everything we've come to know and learn over the course of the seasons, there's no possible way to create a new mytharc after they've dealt with the Apocalypse. No way. It definitely should go out with a bang while still holding strong.

Oh, most definitely. I would love to explore the background of Mary and her family as hunters, and even more so with Castiel and his personal journey with finding God this season. That would be awesome just to see little things here and there. There are many possibilities with these kinds of stories that they've left hanging, so if they do decide to continue to carry on the show it shouldn't be primarily focused on the Winchester boys but something else, but still tied to them in ways.

Going back to Monster of the Week would be a let-down after this, and smack of continuing for the sake of continuing. 'Course having Castiel as a third teammember in every Monster of the Week story could be interesting because it would such a change for him, but execs could screw it up. Execs can screw anything up.

As much as MotW had been great in the beginning of the show, we've progressed way beyond those that if we returned to it, it wouldn't be of any substance after what we're dealing with in this mytharc. I'm praying Kripke doesn't do this because we want to show to end on a powerful note, not return to a weak standard.

I would propose having the Crazy Adventures of the Winchesters and Castiel, as in going on cases with them pretending to be FBI agents or something (because that was fun, lol) but it wouldn't make sense after everything. I think I'd rather have webisodes of that than an entire season dedicated to it, you know what I mean?
