Yesterday and today mark the 25th anniversaries for the WB series premieres of Angel (October 5th, 1999) and Roswell (October 6th, 1999).
I remember watching Angel when it premiered. Being a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, knowing that this was a spin-off and would be airing back-to-back alongside it made me very excited, particularly for the occasional crossovers they did. That right there was event television for me, back in the day. Angel was very different both in tone and direction from BTVS, which would gain its own audience since some preferred one or the other more. Over the years I actually have a better appreciation of the show more now than I did back then. Yes it had its problems later on, the fourth season especially for obvious reasons, but the earlier seasons were quite solid and I liked the message it was having. Also, another thing I appreciated was how they got secondary and minor characters from BTVS onto the show and managed to give them a chance develop in ways that they wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Even Angel himself got some good character development. I liked him on BTVS, but I adored him on his own show.
Roswell was another WB show I watched and thoroughly enjoyed a whole lot. I remember being intrigued after watching the promos for it, and watched the pilot premiere out of curiosity and immediately was hooked. At the time I didn't even know it was based on a series of books. I liked the ensemble cast of characters (Isabel and Liz were my favs at the time), they were all fantastic, the developing relationships (Max/Liz and Michael/Maria), and the mystery that was unraveling. There were a lot of memorable moments and episodes from the show that I still think about even if I hadn't seen it in some time. It's wild to think that the show only had three seasons. I felt like it went on longer. I seriously need to do a full rewatch, it's been too long.
