Due to The Hunger Games movie, the Battle Royale remake will not be made.
Honestly, I am relieved. Hollywood's obsession with remaking already successful films, foreign films in particular, is utterly ridiculous and it's reaching the point where these remakes are just going to flop no matter how much they want to reboot or upgrade whatever it is they think they're going to do. Because you know they would have fucked it up, stripping away all the cultural significance and meaning behind the story and just making it all about blood and violence. Want some Battle Royale? Watch the original Japanese film, read the novel which that film was based on. If you like manga, there's one for it as well. And while I'm happy that they are no longer thinking about remaking it, there are other remake catastrophes still waiting to be in production (i.e. Akira) America needs to learn to stop butchering things like this, from whitewashing to just reconstructing the plot entirely to where it's completely unrecognizable and dumbed down for American audiences. Just leave it the fuck alone.
I'm also seeing a lot of debate about Battle Royale versus The Hunger Games, many saying that The Hunger Games is a rip-off and whatnot. You know, having read both, I can definitely say there are similarities in concept but definitely not the same, in my honest opinion. Not that I don't see how people can come to that conclusion, but there are differences. I may make another post concerning this very topic since it is rather interesting the debates surrounding this.
