"Oh man, are you cereal?"
Sep. 12th, 2025 02:24 pm++ I don't have Internet/cable for one day and I miss quite a wild day with politics, huh?
++ Although I was aware of it as it was happening, just reading about the kinktober shenanigans that happened a while ago, from the various posts summarizing it to the jokes, not only was I baffled and amused it also got me thinking that this is the kind of fandom nonsense I much prefer reading about. Less exhaustingfandom wank "discourse" and more just pure ridiculousness.
++ It was recently announced that Life Is Strange is getting a television series adaptation. This technically isn't news as fans of the game have long been waiting for it since the initial announcement about a television show being made since 2016, however aside from that there were no further information of anything going forward so most assumed that this was yet another project either silently dropped or in development hell. With Amazon acquiring the rights to produce the show, this makes it more likely to become a reality.
On one hand, I'm uncertain how I feel about this since adapting a game where the entire purpose is the butterfly effect via the interactive element of player's choices affecting the outcome of the story is nearly impossible. However, with that being said that doesn't mean that they cannot just take the core story and adapt it. Of course the Life Is Strange franchise, outside of the first game that is, is kind of all over the place, with the latest installment being met with a lot of mixed reactions. This television series could either be a direct adaptation of the first game, leaving aside the ending which can either be a creator's choice or left ambiguous, or an original story based around the concept of the games, which would make sense since Life Is Strange 2 and Life Is Strange: True Colors are separate stories not tied to one another. Or it could try to tie into Life Is Strange: Double Exposure where that game is attempting to MCU-ify the franchise into being an extended multiverse, since everything in media wants to do that nowadays it seems, idk. Again, this franchise is rather all over the place, since this also includes the comics that do have extended elements depending on which ending you choose in the first game, and it really depends on what they plan on doing with the story, adapting it (the first game and its prequel) outright or deviating from it entirely.
Of course, there's no addition information that I've seen so far as to what is going to happen. Like with anything, it could possibly actually be good or it could simply be another disastrous attempt at slapping a known IP name onto a story that has nothing to do with the original concept and is just in-name-only (see: Until Dawn, similar gaming mechanics as LIS but the recent movie adaptation could've been a straightforward adapting of the story since it was already cinematic yet they just didn't). It's always a gamble. And who knows, this might wind up as another case of development hell like before.

Date: 2025-09-13 12:49 am (UTC)This is the first I'm hearing about this! Granted, I've been inactive in the fandom for a bit now. I really enjoyed the first game and Before The Storm. I'm (tenatively) excited--I just hope they're not tying in the later games, because those did not hold me. I felt like I was dragging through so I could keep my LiS fandom knowledge relevant...😮💨
Oh, I gotta get caught up on this tea! The last thing my IRL writing group was buzzing about was NaNoWriMo shutting down, and none of them are public about being involved in any spicy projects. 👀

Date: 2025-09-14 02:28 pm (UTC)You know, we should really bring back "fandom wank" as a descriptor. It's much more apt than "discourse," I think--it conveys how silly and unserious most of it is.

Date: 2025-09-17 04:32 am (UTC)Time will tell, ultimately. I probably wouldn't watch it anyway. I just don't have an interest in video game adaptations for some reason. Yet I'll watch walkthrough "movies" on YouTube.
=^..^=~

Date: 2025-09-23 06:18 am (UTC)It's always a gamble when it comes to adapting anything, but especially video games particularly ones that are already cinematic in their own right. It's why whenever there is an adaptation I always tell people that they can watch it, but also watch the cinematic "movie" cutscenes from the game as a comparison.
