++ I'm sure most are aware of the global Microsoft outage caused by CrowdStrike, the catastrophic cybersecurity that has affected businesses worldwide who relied on the software. All I could think of was that this is precisely what people thought the Y2K scare was going to be like. Well, it only took twenty-four years to get us there, which totally fits with the 90s/Y2K nostalgia recently. Joking aside though, this clusterfuck is undoubtedly going to have major consequences down the line. The fact that one update which had a bug effectively shut everything down on a global scale is bad. Some serious reconsidering and reevaluating needs to be done on that front. Furthermore, this is why I don't trust anything involving "The Cloud", because shit like this can happen.

++ The 2024 Emmy nominations have officially been listed. While I knew it was a long shot anyway, I'm still bummed that Game Changer and Hot Ones were snubbed. It was nice that they were eligible to be considered for a nomination regardless, as what Sam Reich gave a nice post about it, but I would've thought that at least Hot Ones would've made it since it has featured so many known actors/celebrities and has been highly praised for being impressive with their thorough research and excellent interviewing during such a unique challenge for the guest. Sadly, the Academy is very old-fashioned.

At the end of the day, while nominations/wins are great the proper recognition isn't from award show ceremonies and trophies but rather from fans who remain dedicated to what they love regardless.

++ In promotion for Deadpool & Wolverine, Xbox has released a Deadpool-themed controller, with the back being butt-shaped. Sadly, this is only available for a one-off sweepstakes and not sold outright, which is a shame because I would absolutely buy it if I could.

Yeah, it's bad. And definitely a case for not everything being in "the cloud".

I think the Y2K scare was because we didn't really trust technology yet. I remember that people believed you literally couldn't touch a computer if it were turning on, or it would break. This happened because we've come to trust technology too much, or at least the internet.

Yeah, we've become too comfortable relying on this kind of technology that something like this was inevitable. It's so interesting how far the pendulum swung to opposite direction, where once there was being cautious and careful to becoming too confident and trusting of anything online. This was just a software update issue caused by their own company, what would happen if someone truly had nefarious means?

yeah, I still don't know if the day I took off on Friday was free for everyone due to this 😂 I guess I'll find out tomorrow. god was a clusterfudge. I'm so glad I decided against travelling on Friday, mainly due to the weather forecast. not sure if the Bahn was affected but with my luck the regional company was running it or sth.

Heh, you're the second person I've seen compare this cluster to Y2K, and you're right! How did we get THIS far into the future and not plan for something like this? I also think you're right that it's because everything's connected and stored on the Cloud. Like, we don't need that much interconnectivity. Which is why every time one of my devices asks if I want to "sync" my information, I go, "Nope! I'll import everything by hand, thanks."

Considering how comfortable we've become use relying entirely on things like this, what happened was sadly inevitable. Everything needing to be synced up, to be interconnected, etc, I'm just tired of it all. And while I don't think anything will change (even though it should), I do hope some will do serious reconsideration. Because this was supposedly just a mistake, a serious and entirely preventable mistake but still accidental nevertheless, what would happen if someone had nefarious intentions?

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping too, that they'll at least look at this and go, "Hm. We need some fail safes." The other thing is the "update" that went through was late in the afternoon on a Friday, so no one who works in the corporate sector even knew about it until Monday morning. Meanwhile, SO MANY PEOPLE work the weekend! This is one of the things that drives me bonkers at the library: if anything goes wrong in IT or Admin over the weekend, we just have to tell everyone, "Sorry, we can't fix it until Monday."

The Xbox controller is a delight.

I've been thinking about how we avoided Y2K because we took it seriously and spent a lot of money to prevent the issue. Now we have people who cut every corner they can in terms of staff and paying for things and now we're starting to see the effects of that. A few years back one of our major telecom companies had an outage and it meant that about half of Canada didn't have phone, internet, or television. Which also meant that 911 went down, stores couldn't process payments, a lot of businesses just couldn't work.

I know my company sent out an email (because of course they did) to say anyone who was on that telecom service and needed to come into the office to work could do so as they still had service. How they expected people who had a full outage to receive that message I do not know.
