You just got eclipsed.
Apr. 12th, 2024 01:43 am++ I didn't get to see the solar eclipse because, well, I kinda slept through it, lol. But it wasn't like there was much to see anyway from our end, I don't think. I've been enjoying the pictures and videos from others, though.
++ I just read that Tim Kring is going to, once again, reboot Heroes that will be called Heroes: Eclipsed and, I don't know, I kinda laughed when I saw the announcement.
Here's the thing, I wouldn't necessarily mind another chance for the concept of the show to be redone in some way, focusing on entirely new characters and going on a completely different journey, but I would rather have it be done by anyone else except for Tim Kring. He has proven time and time again that he isn't good at this kind of storytelling, particularly since, IIRC, he wasn't much of a fan of superhero comics. That might've since changed, but it's very telling. Listen, I adored Heroes when it first premiered, I remember being so hyped after seeing the promos for it and the tagline ("Save The Cheerleader, Save The World") and the actual tie-in comics that were published, it was such an event to the point where they even did a world tour after the first season to celebrate. It was unlike anything anyone had seen at the time, which is why the first season blew up the way it did. But from season two onward it just went downhill and continued to decline. I'd never fallen in and out of love for a show as fast as I did with Heroes. I was only active in that fandom for a brief moment before I finally peaced out after season two.
Could this reboot be good? It's a possibility. Personally though, I didn't pay attention when Kring did the revival in 2015 with Heroes Reborn, so it's unlikely I'll check this one out. Besides, there is a lot more superpower-based shows available now than there were in 2006, I can just get that fix elsewhere.

Date: 2024-04-12 11:12 am (UTC)Wait, really? That surprises me, all things considered! He seemed to be a huge fan, based on the webcomics, the homages, etc. But I suppose you can like the idea of something, rather than the actual thing.
(I will say that I'm not a superhero comic person myself, so I may have missed a few "tells" that they weren't really his thing. I have no idea what's DC Comics and what's Marvel.)

Same here.

I feel like in a way, Heroes was trying to do what those shows ended up doing. It combined a bunch of Superhero stories into one more broad plot, except that's easier to do with media that's part of a multiverse, rather than a TV show. I remember assuming the characters would all work together, only to be thrown off when they'd gone completely separate ways in S2 (with a few exceptions, like Matt and Mohinder, who I shipped pretty hard).

I was the same way. I think many who watched the show assumed that, because the way the first season was structured it made it seem like the characters were going to interact and come together towards the end of the season and then after that kind of remain close together in some way because of how interconnected they all were, and having them just not do that felt like such a letdown. I also remember that they intended on the show being more of an anthology, focusing on different characters each season, but they kind of just focused on Sylar and the Petrelli family, while introducing and dropping any new character that appeared.
I also shipped Matt/Mohinder hard during season two. I mean, they were living together sharing pseudo-parental responsibilities with Molly! It was such a cute little family idea.

Ahh, I can see that.

Right? Come on! But they also all got dropped.
I do think Heroes suffered in part due to the Writer's Strike, but they also bit off more than they could chew, especially with all of that false conflict, which drives me nuts. Just have a conversation.

Date: 2024-04-13 08:01 am (UTC)Yeah, perhaps. There was definitely some homage to the genre, Isaac's premonition paintings were in the comic book art style, for example, which as a massive plot point early on, but in hindsight it definitely seemed like although they acknowledged this it felt like they were also kind of dismissing it at the same time? I don't know. Season one sets everything up, but it fails to deliver after that.
I go back and forth on whether it was meant to be a show with an homage to superhero comic books but had its own identity or if it really was about a creator who just didn't get it. The former seems likely based on the first season alone, because there was definitely a foundation to season one that had the perfect setup for what a superhero team would eventually become, however the latter explains season two and the rest of the show after that.

I've seen people solely blame the writer's strike for what happened with Heroes, but it was only contributing to an already ongoing problem that they just never recovered from, sadly. Even going back to the season one finale where it felt a bit too anticlimactic to what was being setup all season long. But I agree, they definitely got a bit presumptuous with the story and it became kind of a convoluted mess as a result.
(I can rant about this forever, I have such bitter feelings with it comes to the wasted potential of Heroes.)
