Anyone who was on Tumblr yesterday knows what this means.

I don't care much for April Fools, for obvious reasons, however I do like harmless fun when it hurts nobody and is just silly for the sake of whimsy (ex: Rickrolling). Tumblr will always do something every year on their site, and it can vary on whether it is fun or obnoxious, depending on personal preference of course. This year they implemented a Boop-O-Meter, where once it was activated you could give boops to other activated users, similar to that of a nudge feature but with extra goodies attached. The meter would tell you how many boops you gave, and how many were given back, alongside how many boops were given overall across the site. You could boop people more than once to up your numbers (including giving regular boops, super boops, and ~evil~ boops) and there were three badges you received if you hit a particular milestone of boops. The final badge was if you hit 1,000 boops, and I almost was there before the Boop-O-Meter went away.

It was a silly little thing that lasted for April Fools, it doesn't really mean much at the end of the day but it was still fun and it's something I haven't seen done anywhere else online. Not on this level of collective user participation, anyway. I miss it already, but it was fun while it lasted. Although I am in agreement with others that a nudge feature like that would be nice.

I don't know, it was just something positive that happened, especially on a day where people can be assholes it was nice to have something cute and happy to be distracted by. And I definitely needed that.

An "evil boop" was when you hovered over the boop button so it does the twirl three times before pressing it.

Yeah, a "super boop" was one twirl (or two), but more than that it would've been an "evil boop". Based on some comments I saw, some people weren't able to do it if they were on mobile. It was very much a desktop-friendly extra goodie.

I initially didn't realize it was supposed to be a specific activation thing, and only realized after posting a boop .gif! But to be fair, a lot of people posted boop things without the activation bit. It was all in good fun, either way.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again, I miss when more of the internet was like this. Fun is a good thing.

I also think that's what April Fool's Day should be! Pranks work with the right audience - some people love them. I prefer ones like these, obvious "pranks" that are more for the lolz than anything else.

Yeah it was nice and I definitely needed it. At one point I stopped doing most everything and just hit the boop button a lot while watching "Only Murders in the Building". It was chill.

Same here. It was a nice distraction, and a nice way of getting some interaction, and it was fun learning how to do the "super" and "evil" boops so I could spam mutuals and random people with those. It was great fun. I already miss it.

An "evil boop" was when you hovered over the boop button and let it twirl for a few times and then click it. Having it twirl just once (or even twice) would just give you a "super boop", more than that would be an "evil boop".

Ah, after experimenting I was only able to get it to reliably super boop after it twirled twice. I'm pretty sure I let it twirl more than that, it went back to a normal boop, but I only noticed the super boop when someone else sent me one, so maybe I didn't realize I was doing evil boops. But that's cool!

It certainly was reminiscent of the early days of Tumblr, the vibe was similar from when there was a lot of user participation from some kind of activity, whether user-created or something the site did. The only other thing that has come close to it in recent years was the collective creation of Goncharov. It's just a prime example of people coming together to do something fun just for the sake of it.

It would tell you what you were sending someone, either a regular boop, a super or an evil boop. Were you on mobile? I'm desktop only so I don't know how everything looked on mobile.

I typically saw the dash notification and it said what it was, but I only read it closely when I saw the activity notification that someone sent me a "super boop" and got curious how to do it myself. Before that I was paying more attention to the paws and the counter, and keeping an eye on my dash for new people to boop. By the end I was mostly not paying attention to what it was saying at all and was mostly watching the show (it's pretty easy to just click the same two spots repeatedly without paying full attention). I just wanted my third badge.

Ah, that makes sense. At that point so I was I, I'll admit. I tried to give most people all the different variations of boops I could, but when the hours were closing in before the day was up I was also kind of doing whatever. I was nearly there before there was no more boops.

Yeah, this was definitely something that I prefer when it comes to online interaction. While the Internet of Ye Olde Days obviously wasn't perfect, at least there was a sense of whimsy and silliness and just having fun for the sake of fun.

Exactly. Pranks should never be something harmful or used to bully or humiliate others, which is why most hate April Fools to begin with because some people do take it too far and try to justify being mean-spirited with a "it's just a prank, bro". Pranks should be purely for the lulz that will make the other person laugh or find ridiculous, like telling someone bad puns where they just roll their eyes but smile all the same. We need more of that kind of whimsy in general.

That is so cute! It reminds me of a summer event on Kingdom of Knuffel where users could throw water bombs at each other and at NPCs to unlock event dressup items :D

I really like fun April Fools pranks. One YouTube channel I follow (Smosh) had quite the day because for years there has been speculation that two of their cast seemed to be a bit more than just friends but it's always been denied. They announced their marriage on April 1 and it was a whole day of the fandom trying to figure out if it was a joke, or if announcing on April fools was the joke. It was the second one, they're legit married and it's adorable.

Anyway, I'm here for fun April Fools on the internet and not so much for anything mean spirited.

We really do. It was fun, and it's something that I hope gets revived again. It demonstrates user activity, participation, and willingness to just be a little silly just for the hell of it. We need more of that around.

This sounds incredibly cheerful! I'll admit that I don't use Tumblr as much as I'd like to, so I totally missed this event, but it sounds like a blast. Cute idea! I hope they come up with something just as fun, if not more so, next year!

Yeah, I remember that. That was more individual user created prank than an overall website created thing, which I'll admit was humorous at first but then it got old rather quickly. Even Misha Collins himself asked people to stop, but of course nobody listened. I still see people having the Mishapocalypse icons all these years later.
