To celebrate its 40th anniversary, David Lynch's 1984 Dune adaptation will be re-released in theaters in February on the 18th and 19th only. While we have the movie on DVD (both versions, the theatrical and the extended cut), it would be absolutely amazing to watch it on a big screen. It's also something that people should experience for themselves, especially to compare and contrast the newest Dune adaptation (although if you're avoiding spoilers for the second part coming out later this year I would advise not going to this event). I know that David Lynch refuses to talk about or acknowledge this movie, however for all its flaws and imperfections I still adore it. It's unique in its own way. It has quite a cast (including Sting with his Space Underwear), great costumes, the soundtrack by Toto, the adorable pug, the sandworms that are quite phallic in design as well as the Navigator that has a mouth like a vagina that I'm positive was done on purpose.

Additionally, for anyone who hasn't seen it and are interested, there is the fan-edited version of movie, which was a project done by a devoted fan who wanted to fix and improve the film and turn it into what it could've been by editing in additional/deleted scenes and making it more like the book as much as possible.

Lol, watching the 1984 Dune just made me want to rewatch the new one...it really brought home what a good adaptation of the book the new one is, by comparison. And I don't just mean things like special effects...so many odd script choices and deviations. But hope you enjoy!

I hadn't heard about David Lynch hating the movie! I actually haven't seen it. I'll have to watch the fan-edited version.

There are a few nitpicks I have with the newer one, and we'll have to see how the second part plays out and if it'll stick the landing, but this was clearly done with the intent on making it as closely to the book as possible (considering how dense it is, and it was a smart decision to split it into two films because of that) and so far it has succeeded.

I still enjoy the 1984 film for what it was, though. Kyle McLachlan will always be Paul to me.

It's more disappointment than hate, really. It was a long and exhausting production that the end result wasn't what he had wanted it to be due to the studio demanding certain things and then ultimately taking creative control away from him. Which is a shame because by watching the movie you can see the potential that was there. It's why the fan-edit attempts to clean up and showcase what could have been.

I might have to catch that! I'm not a fan of the 1984 Dune, but my mom was, and it would be neat to see it on a big screen.

It's unlikely, I haven't seen a movie in the theaters since 2020 for obvious reasons (and with cases rising recently doubly so). I'll probably do so in spirit with our DVDs. :)

It's been ages since I've seen that version. I love fans. I've never seen the fan edit and I really like the idea that fans engage with material and really seek to better it.

For all its many flaws, I still love it, too. I used to rewatch our laserdisc version all the time. It's still a fun romp and has a wonderful soundtrack that reminds me of being little whenever I listen to it. The pug tho T-T Brad Dourif as Piter. Patrick Stewart as Gurney. Sting in his underwear tho alkdjalaj It's such a literal trip.

I finally saw the 1984 Dune a couple years ago. I didn't know that about David Lynch and also didn't know about the fan-edited version. Thanks for sharing it!

It's so long since I saw that movie that really all I remember about it were some of the special effects -- the Navigator, the blue eyes.

It's something that one has to experience at least once, if not on the big screen then just the movie in general, especially if they're interested in the newer movies.

It's so very 80s, even when the special effects weren't at its best (the defensive shield fight practice scene, lol) it still was entertaining.

I really do love it when fans do projects like this, since it's out of love for the material and the story. Clearly fans saw something from the 1984 movie that could be done in the way David Lynch wanted it to be or the way it ought to have been from the start and tried the best they could.
