Continuing on from the movie and television memes:

Day 24: Favorite animated movie
Stop-motion counts as animation, right? So I'm going to say Něco z Alenky from Jan Švankmajer.

While his other projects are also incredibly good especially with being a combination of live-action, stop-motion and animation and are notable for their surrealism, this movie was my first introduction to him as a director and got me interested in seeing what else he has done. I love seeing different interpretations and variations of the Alice in Wonderland story, and this version is perhaps high up there with being among my top favorites because of how bizarre and unsettling it is. It blends live-action with stop-motion and is atmospherically and environmentally disturbing in the best way.

What's one show you thought you'd hate but turned out to really enjoy?
I don't go into a show thinking that I will hate it, that's not how I operate. I might be somewhat indifferent or neutral prior, or have heard things from third parties about it that might make me a bit apprehensive, but even with the latter I take it with a grain of salt if I do suddenly want to check something out and go into it without any previous bias. I've never gone out of my way to hatewatch something, though.

What's one show you thought you'd love but turned out to really hate?
It's less hate and more going into something that I thought I'd like, but it turning out to not be what I expected it to be, going into a direction that I wasn't fond of or disappointed by, and just realizing it wasn't for me. Sometimes this happens immediately, other times they actually start off pretty good but then take a turn that I'm not feeling. Once Upon A Time, for example, was a show that I genuinely liked the first season of, but then season two happened and they were heading into a direction that I wasn't really interested in, so I stopped watching.

This happens a lot, I find. There will be things that I'll like the concept up, but realize I'm not that interested in where things are going. It's even more disappointing, I think, when it comes highly recommended but it just doesn't do it for you.

++ In unsurprising news, HBO's The Last Of Us has been renewed for a season two (hopefully it'll stick and not be reversed like other shows recently), most likely to adapt the second game. While I'm honestly thrilled by this news because I love the story so much and how it's been adapted for television so far, my apprehension this time is more towards the fandom since, sadly, the second game got so much flack initially, you cannot mention the game without it being a subject of contention between fans. Now, there are valid reasons to critique the game itself, but the amount of hate it got I felt was largely unwarranted, especially since the majority of it was hate towards the voice actors who got a sleuth of hateful comments and death threats (it's known that Laura Bailey got so much of that, though I didn't realize that Ashley Johnson herself also suffered the same treatment), because some douchebags couldn't tell the difference between fiction and reality. It's not news that the gaming community is toxic as fuck, and unfortunately the general online fandom community isn't that much better either at times, mainly in being reactionary and letting their entitlement get the better of them. I just hope that people can behave themselves this go around. I'm not holding my breath, though.

++ But alas, aside from that good news, it seems that HBO Max has decided to pull the plug on its DC content, with Titans and Doom Patrol having their current seasons being their last. I think most figured that would be the case considering the very questionable decisions being made with DC overall. It seems that both shows knew that this would be the case and planned for them to have a good series finale, which is more than what other shows that have been pulled were able to do. Right now we're in a mid-season hiatus, at least with Doom Patrol which is what I watch, so I'll be waiting for the last six episodes to air whenever it does. Hopefully it does.

I'm not surprised that HBO Max cancelled these shows. Things are messy over there and even more so when it comes to DC.

I felt the same about Once Upon A Time loved the first couple of seasons and then gave up on it.

That's sad about the DC shows, but not surprising with all the decisions with DC of late. :-/

Jan Švankmajer's Little Otik, which I watched in 2007, is to this day the weirdest movie I have ever seen. I kinda loved it too, but I haven't watched any of his other movies.

"I don't go into a show thinking that I will hate it, that's not how I operate."
Same. And yes, fandom osmosis sometimes (often, tbh) only shows me the things that make me less inclined to watch a show, but I know that so I take this factor into account - instead of going "this show sounds like I would hate it but I'll watch it anyway" I go "I'm sure there are many wonderful things that the fandom doesn't happen to highlight" and it's usually true. :)

Re: Once Upon A Time, also same. It's one of very few shows that I stopped watching on purpose instead of kinda just forgetting about it. (Though there are some things in the later seasons that I've heard of by osmosis that sound like something I would like to see, so maybe I'll change my mind at some point.) I was so excited about it that I had a countdown before S1 aired, and I did love it, then S2 was also mostly okay for me, but at the beginning of S3 I completely gave up on it.
