++ We've been going through some severe weather conditions due to the atmospheric storms ever since Christmas, and while where I am it's mostly been mild (the only bad things have been intermittent power outages and part of our fence being blown down, we did get one warning of a possible evacuation but it was an incorrect location since we weren't even in that area that was supposed to be evacuated), other areas haven't been so lucky. Seeing certain locations and places that I know and have visited being flooded and large trees being knocked over is quite wild to see. I know that we've been wanting rain since we constantly have been in droughts, but we didn't mean it like this!

++ Random thought of the day: I realized that if I had decided to use my LJ/DW username for my Tumblr, I would automatically be considered a bot, lol.

It really kind of gives some perspective of how things operate differently on other sites, and how on places like Tumblr having a random name with numbers attached to the end you're immediately suspicious of being a porn bot whereas having a very inappropriately explicit yet very niche fandom name is considered acceptable. Although I feel like this is a very Tumblr-specific issue, which didn't start off as an issue initially but once it became noticeable and more of a nuisance then it became more of a problem, especially recently.

I didn't even realize that. In lots of places it's completely normal to have numbers in your name. Another thing that makes tumblr special 🤣

It just adds something else unique to the place, I suppose. It's annoying and I wish I wasn't dodging them left and right, but at least everyone else on the site is in a collective agreement how annoying it is and have since made jokes and memes about it. So, we're all in this together in that sense. Ah, Tumblr.

I've seen videos on the news from the bad floods in California, truly awful. :( We've had very bad weather thw whole last week, too, lots of rain and storms, but not as bad as that.

*eyes own username* Yeah... XD Your name wouldn't set off my alarm bells immediately, though, because "rogueslayer" isn't something a porn bot usually uses. It sounds more like fandom. But random numbers are dangerous. XD I've gotten so many bots as followers over the last week, super annoying! And some of them didn't have the obvious "first name last name number" username but mixed it up a bit, the name sbecoming a bit more random. The blogs looked like the generic bot blogs, though. There was one where I was sure it must be a porn bot - young woman in picture, name questionable - but the blog had actual reblogs and lots of it was general fandom stuff, so I've not blocked that one for now.

I've had my name since my LJ days and took it over to tumblr. Back then, it didn't matter so much about the names; it's mainly a development over the last few months.

It's supposedly clearing up now, at least the rain/winds are letting up, but anything is subject to change and we're still going to be dealing with the aftermath of it all. So yeah, while where I am it hasn't been that bad aside from really strong winds causing power outages, seeing the kind of damage elsewhere is pretty sad.

Yeah, that's true, lol. It's only when you're just glancing at a username that has numbers you have to double and triple check just in case. It's not always an indicator, but lately it's been the main cause of bots so people are kind of on high alert whenever they get a new follower. Bots are pretty easy to spot, even if they evolve they all have the same kind of identifiable traits. It's just an annoyance. I tend to get a few a day, and I just block them immediately.

LMAO, I was going to say nope, it's not a first-name-last-name-number one, but I think they've been evolving in the last couple of days, so scratch that. xD (For the last few weeks I basically only go to tumblr to block and report bots every few days, lol. I mean, I'm not avoiding tumblr because of the bots, that's just a coincidence.)

Oh, they've definitely been evolving. I still get the made-up first-and-last-name with random numbers attached at the end, but now it's just some random names, or just jumbled up nonsensical things that are made to look like names. I'm usually quick to block them since I'm on Tumblr daily, but still.

I think I read a post about Tumblr usernames, and if you add an icon and new title and description, you're not going to be flagged as a bot. Or you'd be less likely to be flagged as a bot.

But that's honestly. why I avoid using numbers in usernames as much as I can. They just automatically look suspicious to me because of the bots.

Yeah, pretty much. That was mostly towards newcomers who were refugees from Twitter transferring to Tumblr who didn't quite know how the site worked, and that if they're wondering why they weren't getting followers or getting blocked that having a blank blog with no icon/description/no reblogs was probably a reason why. Most of us who have been on Tumblr for so long know that blank blogs with nothing in them are often bots which we immediately block.

It's just an interesting thing to observe, really.
