That makes us mighty.
Jan. 9th, 2020 01:45 pm++ Oscar Isaac giving absolutely no fucks and calling out Disney/Star Wars for being homophobic cowards is something I deeply appreciate. I understand actors wanting to keep their mouths shut about things in fear of getting blacklisted, but we do need more of them to come out of the woodwork and call out the industry for this kind of shit. The more pushback, the more likely someone will listen.
With that being said, unfortunately Hollywood is still not LGBT friendly. Most mainstream movies are not, this is especially true for huge franchises. They'll promise and claim there will be an LGBT character revealed only for it to be an elaborate queerbaiting marketing scheme to get money. Some directors are genuine about it, of course, and we also appreciate their honest efforts, but the higher ups are ultimately the ones in charge and who make the calls. It's been clear for a long time now that Hollywood movies are far behind when it comes to any representation of marginalized groups. Sure, there will be that groundbreaking one every once in a while, but for every step forward there are many steps backwards, so nothing is really progressing at all. Other forms of media, however, while not entirely perfect and still have issues of their own, have pushed through those boundaries and are far better with having representation in their stories. Hollywood needs to collectively get their act together and stop living in their outdated version of how movies should be. They won't, of course, but this is why I'm hoping that more actors, directors, people behind the scenes, will push back hard enough that something will change from within.
++ Apparently FOX is open to the idea of a Firefly revival. There's been talk about reviving the series for years now, and I still stand by my opinion that, as much as I loved the series, it needs to be left alone. With that being said, I do agree that the only way it could work is if it's a limited series. A limited series on a streaming service the either focuses on a new crew with cameos from the original cast, or having the old crew who separated from Serenity come back together after all these years for one last hurrah. Ideally, that would be fantastic. I doubt it will happen, though.

Date: 2020-01-10 12:23 am (UTC)Woohoo! I mean, I wasn't invested in Poe/Finn, but that sudden plotline in The Rise of Skywalker felt like a tacked-on direct response to the fans, saying "look how heterosexual Poe is", and that's... crass. That was the only thing I disliked in the movie.
Edit: In response to what Michael Thorn said in the Firefly article, I don't think the show needs reinventing to be as resonant now as it was then.

I agree. I mean, people are still being introduced to the show today and it resonates with them just fine. It still holds up. There is no need to reinvent it.

Date: 2020-01-11 07:48 pm (UTC)Unless Whedon already had a vision in mind for it, something that we know would tie into the universe, I probably would pass. Kinda like the Buffy reboot. Not necessary.

Date: 2020-01-11 08:24 pm (UTC)Would it be cool to see a continuation of the universe? Of course, but it has to be done right and not in a "well everyone else is doing it I guess we should do it too". I don't like the idea of reinventing something that still resonates with people. It's just unnecessary. Plus, I just don't trust FOX. Yes, they technically still do own the rights to the show, but at the same time you think fans haven't gotten over how they were burned by them before?
At this point, I think it's all talk. It would be nice to see an on-screen continuation of that world, but unless the right people are involved I don't really want it.

Date: 2020-01-12 07:38 am (UTC)It's just a complicated "what if" because revivals can go either way of being a nice continuation of the story many years later or it can completely ruin it. And the question is, would we want to risk that? It's quite a fickle thing to get into, which is probably why the conversation of reviving it has been talked about for years now without any follow through, because the stars have to be aligned perfectly, with the right people at the right time and everything. It's what made the show so special in the first place, and the movie deal shortly thereafter its cancellation. And that's something you just cannot recreate unless the stars align just right again.
That's just my thoughts, anyway.

Date: 2020-01-12 11:31 pm (UTC)Unless there's passion going into a possible revival, the same passion that was had when making the original show and even the movie in the first place, it's probably not going to be good. I don't want a revival just for the sake of it.
(And also? I think the disillusionment people have had with Whedon over the years has definitely affected how people view the thought of any kind of live-action revival if done by him, as in people are still very critical of what was initially planned for the future of the show that they aren't trusting that he wouldn't just want to repeat what he wasn't able to do, etc.)

Date: 2020-01-23 05:54 pm (UTC)I'm very iffy about them doing a Firefly revival. That said, I could see myself watching a limited series with a new crew.

Date: 2020-01-23 07:08 pm (UTC)Yeah, a revival could so easily be done wrong, since most revivals don't really match what the original was anyway and can ruin something that should've been left alone. However, a limited series with a brand new crew would be interesting. It could be like an extended universe of sorts, similar to the likes of Stargate, where there can still be cameos of the original cast sprinkled in here and there but the story is mostly focusing on the new characters and their journey. The only upgrading they would need to do is budget-wise and actually having Asians being cast in main roles in the Asian-influenced world that was created.
