I think since it's become so expected now in fiction, especially with television, I don't think most shows know what to do when it comes to WTWT. Some of them utilize the trope to the best they can with good writing and natural progression leading to some good results in the end of that journey, but the majority of the time it's not done for the sake of the characters and their relationship but rather for the ratings, which is a bad sign. And audiences can tell when it's forced and not genuine. This can become quite disastrous when it becomes queerbaiting, too, which is even more disturbing when mainstream media plays off that WTWT trope for that reason, but that's another rant entirely.
