Frak this.
May. 11th, 2018 11:44 amBrooklyn Nine-Nine was cancelled.
This was announced yesterday and it created such a universal outrage from people that even famous celebrities like Mark Hamill and Lin-Manuel Miranda were twitting their displeasure of the show being cancelled, and want the show to be renewed in any possible way. And not only has there been fan petitions but it's been reported that there are multiple networks are looking to save the show from the claws of cancellation, which is amazing. In truth yes, it had five sold seasons which, on FOX, is such a rarity and a damn miracle if you can make it past one season, but the way that FOX treated the show was horrible since they barely promoted it, and the only reason it got the loyal following it does was through word of mouth by people begging others to watch the show because it was so good. I want to hope that somehow B99 gets renewed elsewhere because it deserves at least two more seasons.
I also just found out today that Syfy has cancelled The Expanse. And right in the middle of their still airing third season. Just, the fucking audacity. It's been reported that it's being shopped around for a new home which I hope it succeeds in doing so, but still. The Expanse is such a brilliant and amazing scifi show, probably one of the best scifis I've watched in recent years, and them letting it go for whatever reason? Frak that nonsense.
I understand that it's the nature of the business which is run by numbers, I'm no stranger when it comes to my shows being unjustly cancelled before their time, but I will never understand the reasoning behind cancelling shows that not only have strong loyal fanbases, but are also critically acclaimed and are extremely well-reviewed, highly rated and been praised by nearly everyone. It just makes no sense to me. Both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Expanse are such important shows because they feature some of the best storytelling; their writing is impeccable, they both feature diversity among their main cast (and with The Expanse their entire cast is made up of varying ethnic backgrounds that aren't white), amazing character development, and just are so good in their own right and yet this shit happens. It's nothing new to lose a show to shitty network decisions, but it still hurts and enrages me all the same.
So please, sign and share these petitions in hopes to have both these amazing shows a new home.

Date: 2018-05-11 07:05 pm (UTC)The Expanse is such amazing scifi and I hope you do watch it regardless, though. It's so amazing. It's probably one of the best scifi shows that Syfy has had to date, which is what makes this decision super confusing. Then again, they cancelled Dark Matter last year, which was another brilliant scifi show that got a lot of good ratings and praise. And here they are pulling this shit again, ugh. :/
I do hope it also finds a new home, too. I want The Expanse to live longer and to complete its story, because even though its based off of a book series it's still amazing to watch unfold on the screen and the writing and performances are amazing. It deserves more seasons, dammit.

Date: 2018-05-11 07:11 pm (UTC)And yeah, I feel like every year we kind of mentally and emotionally prepared ourselves for B99 to be cancelled because, well, it's on FOX and anything good on FOX goes to die prematurely. The fact it got five seasons is nothing short of miraculous. But it's still devastating when the news hit. But what's remarkable is the response, which has not only been overwhelming but also incredibly heartwarming that B99 has touched so many people.
I hope that The Expanse receives the same kind of outpour of support the same way B99 has since the announcement, because while it's not nearly talked about enough (that I've seen anyway) but it has received the same amount of praise and recognition of how amazing it is. Both shows deserve better and I hope they both get renewed somewhere else.

Date: 2018-05-11 07:27 pm (UTC)And my more cynical side feels like we lose so many shows anymore too because there's so much Reality TV. I don't want to watch scripted "reality" TV shows, I want to watch stuff like B99.
You're right too that the diversity is refreshing. And very important.
(Maybe if they boot Gina, Fox will renew it? I'd gladly let Gina take the fall. Gina annoys the crap out of me. People compare her to April Ludgate, but I feel like she's closer to Kelly Kapoor from The Office, except Kelly was at least given to us in smaller doses.)

Date: 2018-05-11 07:36 pm (UTC)I really hope both find new homes. B99 could go for a couple more seasons, easily, without dragging things out or getting boring or anything. The Expanse still have stories to tell, clearly. That could easily run for a couple more seasons aswell. It's just so unfair that they're getting the boot. D:
Also, in this the year of 20gayteen, that has been going pretty well re: queer stuff, the absolute nerve to cancel shows that have only *just* added (more) gay characters/had them come out. THE NERVE.
I mean, 20gayteen is still going fairly well, but I mean. *still* :/

Date: 2018-05-11 07:46 pm (UTC)And I personally love Gina, she makes me laugh and she is an essential part of the show as everyone else, and I was happy when she returned. *shrugs*

That or we get so many rebooted/revival shows of things that don't need it, since that seems to be the biggest unnecessary trend nowadays. :/

Date: 2018-05-11 07:56 pm (UTC)I love how they handled Rosa being bi, too. You're right, there's very little true representation.

YES. It's getting a little old. At least in the 90's, most of the reboots were just movies. (Because it happened in the 90's big time. Everyone gets nostalgic and wants their old loves back.)

Date: 2018-05-11 08:19 pm (UTC)And you're absolutely right, B99 could easily go on for several more seasons and never get tired or boring or rehash anything. They've managed five solid seasons without faltering, and I can foresee them going on for five seasons more with bringing in more hilarity and heartwarming moments and character developments. It's just that good. And when you consider other shows that have gone on for seasons, probably longer than they needed to, yet still get renewed, it makes no sense for an actually good show to not get the same treatment.
And with The Expanse being based on a book series, they clearly are able to tell more with the main story. Though I think they kind of knew that it would've been a possibility that they might not actually be able to complete telling the entirety of the book series (there's like, seven books out so far from a nine book series, I think? so even that is not completed), but I would still like them to at least finish telling the story they're doing in the show, like another couple of seasons or so in order to finish the storyline.
Besides, The Expanse is something I recently discovered and it's such excellent scifi, something I haven't seen since Dark Matter. And for Syfy to cancel both of them is a damn travesty.
I mean, 20gayteen is still going fairly well, but I mean. *still* :/
I know what you mean. Both shows have featured LGBT characters and it's severely disappointing when networks cancel shows that have that kind of representation.

Which I understand, but most times it doesn't really end well because nostalgia is very unreliable. Bringing back shows from years ago for that reason, without any kind of plan on advancing the plot where it left off, is just repetitive and oftentimes will leave former fans feeling empty or not really liking what was done in the reboot/revival. Having one or two revivals is okay, a dozen of them at once all because they want to hop on the trend is unnecessary and not do well in their favor. Why bring something back for nostalgic purposes when you could, y'know, just rewatch the original series and reminisce of those good times while having newer, original stories be told instead.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: reboots/revivals/remakes are often just there to bank on the nostalgia, nothing more. Sometimes there will be decent ones, but most of them will just be terrible and do nothing to advance the story or the characters.

Date: 2018-05-12 01:55 am (UTC)Although, due to the massive public response, the chances of B99 getting picked up seem rather good. Let us hope that it does get renewed elsewhere. Same with The Expanse, as well.

Date: 2018-05-12 06:50 am (UTC)I only properly got into The Expanse since uuuh, this year? Ened of last year? I'm a little unsure when I got back to watching it xD, when I was catching up on it before s3 was airing. With some shows, I don't get into them right away, but I might at a later point. And it is so good atm! I cannot believe I didn't properly appreciate Avasarala back in s1. She's amazing, and such a badass. <3
I agree. First DM, now Expanse? :( I get that they're expensive, but meh. I selfishly don't care, and just want them to keep their good space shows.
Yeah. Especially when shows have *just* made their shows more (obviously) gay, like both Dark Matter and The Expanse did.
At least b99 got uncancelled! I just saw the news on twitter (just a tweet from Stephanie Beatriz, but she's all the source I need :D). That was pretty darn fast! Bit of a wild ride, but that may be the fastest uncancellation out of the uncancellations I know of. *nods* Bit impressive. But, with all the people being annoyed by it, and showing their love (including a whole bunch of actors/stars), it makes perfect sense. A network saw the potential, and they went for it. Fox's loss. *sticks tongue at at Fox*

Now I only hope that the same kind of news happens with The Expanse, another show that deserves more seasons because they're not done finishing their story yet....

Date: 2018-05-14 04:41 pm (UTC)I'm horrified to hear about The Expanse. I've gotten a few eps behind, but that is easily the best sci-fi show I've seen in years, if not ever. Quality writing and acting.

Date: 2018-05-14 07:06 pm (UTC)I'm honestly hoping that shopping around for a new home works, whether it's Netflix or Amazon, I don't care. I want more seasons because this is probably the best science fiction show I've seen in a long, long time.

Date: 2018-05-15 10:56 am (UTC)Honest: I hate Fox... every time a show I might like shows up on Fox I try to avoid it... but I still hate them for Firefly I guess!

Date: 2018-05-15 11:14 am (UTC)FOX has ruined so many good shows with their decisions, it's a wonder why anyone tries anything with them anymore. I saw some claim that we should appreciate FOX because they've given shows a chance when they probably wouldn't have gotten elsewhere, but that's utter bullshit. Sure, it gave life to some shows, but the way they mishandle those shows is inexcusable. Firefly could have easily thrived on another channel had FOX not botched that up from the very beginning. B99, while it lasted five seasons with them which is a miracle in and of itself, could have gotten a lot more promotion and appreciation if it had been on NBC in the first place. Dollhouse could have had an interesting start had FOX not intervened and had too much executive meddling. Wonderfalls had potential but FOX cancelled that show after only four episodes. And there are so many others that they mistreated and mishandled for whatever reason. So yeah, FOX sucks.

Date: 2018-05-15 03:43 pm (UTC)Well, he wasn't the one who pitched the show. Eliza Dushku had signed a deal with FOX which they would be developing a series of projects underneath that pact deal, and it was due to this that she went to Joss to pitch the show to him and together they decided to give Dollhouse a go.
the worst thing about firefly is that Fox figured out it did a HUGE mistake and instead of being a “grown up” about it, it made it impossible for any other network to save it!
I remember the issue several years ago when FOX wanted to sue fans for making and selling Jayne hats on Etsy (which they'd been previously doing for years) because it was "their property", and that stirred an entire uproar of outrage, and rightfully so. Basically, due to the show becoming such a huge cult phenomenon and its continued rising popularity over the years FOX has decided to be greedy little fucks about ownership over a show they had little faith in and mistreated so horribly, thus making it impossible for anyone to buy the rights. It makes me so angry.
At least we got a movie and the series continues on in different formats (the comics, video games, etc.)
